Look here, click "details" to see their specs and benches. I think you should be able to hit 8k easily with no tweaking.

Great comparison Joker, I can't wait for the other videos! I think that the other games may turn out differently for a few reasons. They won't be as cpu dependent as a Source engine game, and some are very new and the Dell drivers may not be new enough to have the changes for them.

I just tested Metro 2033 (dx11 - all maxed out) with the 5870CF and 920xm (5% overclocked through bios) and the results are not very good.
The game is pretty much unplayable. The average fps I was getting was around 10. (lowest was 5 and highest was 15).

So, for the time being, the game won't be playabe on any laptop at max settings. Even the new 480M cards won't be a match for the game at max. Nvidia advertizes the cards to give you 40% (20-30% in reality) improvement on Metro 2033, which means you'll get an average of 15-20 fps with 480M SLI.
They have to realease a card that is around 2-3 times faster than the 5870MR to be able to play Metro at max settings.

Send me your e-mail and I'll send you my swap demo. I swapped the 5870s into my 720 system and retested L4D2. The results dropped to 56 fps which was the same speed as the 4870s! That pretty much made me realize the 5870s were far too compromised to consider keeping. BUT I will say that if someone is ordering the R2 and don't have an existing one (like I do), then it's a good buy. But for those of us with existing R2/4870 xf configurations, the 5870xf is more of a downgrade. BTW, if you're reordering, get the 920xm with the dual 5870s. The GPU's scale quite well with a faster CPU.

Joker, do you think AW is going to fix the downgrade with a future driver update or how they perform now is pretty much the best they ever will with stock drivers...

I don't know man, wish I knew. I was really torn between keeping my 5870xf system or my 4870xf. At the end I chose the latter but there's a lot of reasons behind why I went that direction. For me personally, it had to do with performance vs 4870s and because financially it makes no sense for me to spnd an extra $700+ to "upgrade". My 4870xf system didn't cost me much and is $1000+ cheaper than my 5870xf system ($700+ after I work out the money owed on my first R2). If the 5870xf system would have been 15-25% faster consistently, I'd have kept it but that's not the case here. Like I said, for first time owners of R2, the 5870 XF is the way to go. They're newer, faster and dx 11 capable. The biggest limitation is the driver constraint.

I understand your point of view so I guess either Dell will implement better drivers in the future that will take advantage of the actual potential of these cards or the 5970 XF will be the way to go soon enough...

Yeah the ball is in Dell's court. I sent pictures of my chipped frame to the Dell rep I've been dealing with and let them know I was quite upset with the fact that they not only damaged the damn thing during production but used TOUCH UP paint to fix it. Can you believe that? LOL! I guess they thought their customers wouldn't notice. I removed the palm rest last night and noticed they deliberately put touch up paint on it and it was already damaged at the factory. The Dell rep really wants me to keep the system so I've asked for some concessions. I'm going to push for a 920xm, if he goes for it then I'll keep it.

2033 is a horrible game. the coding for that game is as bad as crysis. The graphics are not very impressive either. as for the 5870s. I'm disappointed. All this waiting for FAIL cards.

Just blame Dell. They crippled the vBIOS so it would only run the cards on Dell Drivers, and dell drivers are pretty poor...

I think despite the dell driver handicap, 16k+ should be attainable by those that have a 920xm + 5% OC. I've found the 5870 GPU score in vantage scales as high as 1000 points per CPU stepping. Here's my latest GPU score:

Regarding these drivers maybe they are using us as beta testers with stock drivers and when they dont get many complaints..release a new driver that lets us play with official ATI ones :p ?

Use rivatuner but the trick is a few more steps than the nvidia one
Gotta change the cfg file to recognize the 4870s
and then edit certain entries in the power user area
then you can actually use rivatuner to overclock the cards
so no need for amd gpu tool
Apparently the workaround is similar to the 260m.
(basically Joker will be posting the exact steps later)
The Clocks should stay at what you set them rather than throtle

I didn't think that was something new. Throttling should be by design when surpassing the system thermal limits. CPU will do it also.

It doesn't pass the thermal limits, not even close. It just throttles after a certain core clock is reached. Hell it might even be doing it earlier but I tested the cases at high clocks. I haven't bothered checking lower clocks yet because it's extremely late here and I need to get some sleep.

Guess I'll just have to find out. If it's not supported by the BIOS, it probably will be in the next revision, but at the moment, I think it should work. If I take 5150Jokers comments right, than I'm thinking the 940XM should improve the output of the 5870's since he had stated they scale better with more CPU power. I'll figure it out when I get the CPU and notebook. I'll test the 520 vs. 920XM vs 940XM with the 5870's

Just a quick update from me, before I go off to bed ( I'm nocturnal ).

I've been flashing and testing, and I've tried every combination in 10mhz increments from 700 to 950mhz, and memory in somewhat larger chunks up to 1200mhz.

    I have found that I can complete a Vantage run at 900 / 1200 / 1.1v and I get the following:

    P13689/14545/11635

This is pretty much what Joker posted a few pages back. However, at least with mine, actual gaming is not stable for long at this level. watching the temps on a second monitor, it just creeps up to 86+ eventually, and either crashes entirely or just reloads the driver.

Backing down to 900 / 1000 helps with temps, but not enough. Still, results are pretty much the same:

    P13584/14360/11689

Finally, compromising on 870 / 1000 / 1.1 keeps everything running nice and smooth and the results are negligibly lesser:

    P13490/14273/11582

Nothing crashes, temps are good, and everything is good for now. Until driver/bios updates come, this is the most I'm going to get out of mine.

Attached is the image of that last run.

    More to come . . .
