Well if that is the case then the voltage doesn't sound like it's much of an issue, but if we could utilize the newer drivers we would probably see more of a performance increase. I'd also be interested in seeing what kind of number the 920xm 5870x2 system can throw down with your modified clocks vbios flash.

I don't think this would work on the M17X but you could always try. From what I read it works on the extreme desktop CPU and their new "Open CPU line".

I am pretty happy with my system :) I actually get 3.5 hours battery regularly as well

Unfortunately, console ports scale VERY well with CPU power.....so the 920xm will matter alot more there than the 5870s would. Console GPUs are a joke.....their CPUs however are ridiculous! (IBM cell processor anyone?)

Ok just ran Vantage, I apologize for not posting screen shots but here is what I got. P13454-gpu13232-cpu14166. Not too shabby eh?
Forgot to mention when I took apart my machine I also added a nice coat of AS5 to the vid cards and cpu.

Hey joker have you tried playing any games in dx11? How well do they run compared to dx10-9?

Disappointed to hear the minimal performance gains with the new 5870's

I played Dirt 2 in dx11, it worked fine. I didn't really see a huge difference with the tesselation they implemented. BF BC2 doesn't make use of tesselation so it's pointless looking for changes in that. I didn't bother downloading the uniengine heaven demo.

even if there is difference with this tesselation i dont think it can be viewed on a 17 inch screen. no matter how good it is.

Hmm, I might do it, but I'm going on leave in a few weeks, so I'll be out of it. Plus I'll start with whats on the leader boards now, but 200+ pages is way to much. I would need people to resubmit. Any idea what kind of layout people want?

Probably what he wants is a seperate cpu score and gpu score for vantage and an overall vantage score, and 3dmark06 can be the same as it depends on the cpu alot, so not really a big difference.

Currently playing battlefield bad company 2 on Direct x11. I think the greatest wow factor for me was the realism of the jungle. Dx 11 looks so 3 dimensional it almost pops off the screen. I think Dx 11 makes a huge difference with depth of field, shadows, highlights, midtones. In comparison Dx 10 looks almost 2 dimensional. Here is a really good video showing the 10 & 11 side by side.

    Hi Mandrake,

I am new to this forum and enjoy using it but find it frustering that all the mx11, 15, and 17 and R1 & R2 posts are intermingled. I think many people use this forum as a knowledge base and are looking for particular information. The way models are jumbled together makes it hard to research some topics. Most people really only care about issues pertaining to their system as opposed to other lines of Alienware. As an M17X R2 owners I really don't care about issues pertaining to say the M11x. Great information on your site but very hard to find with as you say so many pages.

    Thanks

I'm sorta surprised there are no CF5870 scores on the top benchmark scores yet. I understand Dell has pretty much fkd them up.. but I am confused as to why they would do something so stupid like that.

Many companies struggled fitting the cards in there systems, it seems this was the best they could do because of the heat issue. Besides they cant compare to my scores ;)

480's might be the same story. Well see what I can do with scores in a few weeks when my R2 gets here. Looking to put up something impressive. If they are as bad as claimed, well than I guess I'm stuck with them. If Mandrakes suspicions are right, and the 5870's included a motherboard revision, than we'll have to test the same motherboard with 4870's

I don't know about anyone else, but as far as benchmarking rankings go, I would personally like to see it broken down to processor and GPU configuration. In other words, I can look at a chart of people with the 820 CPU and dual 4870's and see how they are scoring. My friend has the 820 also, but only a single 4870. It would be nice to have a separate chart for the main configurations.

What I think FalconMachV was talking about above is having sub forums for the different models of AW laptop. M17x, M11x, M15x and maybe one for legacy models. I also would like to see this. Our community is large enough that if I am not here daily, I am looking through a few pages of threads for stuff on the M17x. It could just be my anal retentive organizing trait, but on the other forum I moderate, we do it this way and it works very well (its not a computer forum though). I also think the large thread section could go away if the respective threads within are put into the model specific sub-forum...

I'm convinced it's not the cards(entirely) that's the problem, but the programs. WC3, SC2, WoW, and Sims 3 have all said they don't recognize the card. They do for a single, but not crossfire cards.

Why would people send it back to Dell? Because the 5870 mobility cards aren't twice the power of the 4870's? Gaddd. The cards are brand new. They will do better with time. I for one am upgrading from an m17x r1 with dual 280's.

The cards will do better in time... like evolve into 5970? :D

I don't really count on Dell fixing anything (e.g. m11x stuck fan bug was never fixed, and they're about to release r2). On m17x they still haven't fixed something as trivial as the damn touchpad... seriously...

I think I'll stick with mine, though. Mainly for the reason that there simply isn't anything better, not because it's "awesome". I have mixed feelings about this laptop.... but on the other hand it's still way better than ASUS and Clevo junk.

Hey guys, I finally got some free time tonight to bench the 4870 vs 5870 machines again in Left 4 Dead 2 this time. Tomorrow I plan on doing BF BC2 and maybe a video review of the Crysis Warhead benchmark to wrap things up. My schedule is getting a bit busy now so if I can, I'll try to install Metro 2033 on both machines and see if I notice much of a difference.
