I opened mine a few times. The first was to replace the thermal paste the second was to see if the 280m gtx sli would work.I found that it is fairly straight forward tear down and put back together.

A benchmark is just a program you run. If your looking for a tweaking guide or OC'ing guide there are some around here.

Well yeah, I wasn't sure if I just had to download and run it or what, never done such a thing before. I tried asking a page or two back but it got lost in some other discussion...

I take it if you replace the thermal pad.. you apply thermal paste on the heatsink first..(i.e. like AC5, etc) then apply the thermal pad over it?

No, thermal paste and pads do the same thing. They don't do as good of job as the heatsink does so doubling it up makes it worse. Use paste on the die and for all other chips (especially memory) use thermal pads. The only exception is the southbridge which you should use a thermal pad because paste is not enough.

When you got a chance could you run a stock RE5 Bench.Variable, all on high,AAx2,Motion blur on.So i can compare results to 4870's.
    Cheers

Are you guys really paying $50/sheet for the thermal pad? That price seems crazy to me. I was looking at getting the EK Thermal Pad Sheet - 160mm x 155mm x 0.5mm at $14. I only plan to change the stock pads out and not mess with it after that. Really just don't want the sticky pads dell uses.

Scook, Can't wait to see what numbers you put up with the QX9300. I never could get mine quite up to 3.3GHz. This is really good news. I wonder if it will work for the Core-i CPU's, or is it just C2D?

It's separated by R1 and R2 instead of GPU...

but if you want to start a new one you can separate it anyway you want. :D

I wouldn't mind making it, but i thought DR650SE was going to start it.

Why would you decrease your cpu score just to increase the GPU score?

I was thinking about doing it, but at the moment I have one week till I go home on leave, and probably won't be on much for at least a month. So at this point it doesn't make much sense for me to jump into it. Otherwise I would be all over it. Not even going to take the R2 home with me. Just time with the fam and fiance. When I get back we'll see whats going on

Not bad Aristotelh, now it would be nice to see some RAID setup boot up times (my estimation is that it will be slower)

stamatisx, I might be able to get some up. If I can't to it this week, I won't be able to try for atleast a month. Also might need to flash some new firmware. If the M17x gets here before friday, than I'll get it done friday as thats my only day off.

Also, looks like somone dropped the pin to this thread, it's no longer stuck up top. Maybe a mod can find that thumb tack... ;) :p

damn Q, im working on beating your dual card with a single card... :)
    about time!!
and i do remember you harrasing mandrake about doing something NOW..was that not you? :D :D
waiting to see what new number you come up with. and not just vantage and 3dmark, but all the benchmark test results. i think more and more people are slowly starting to post their laptops now. and it seems to be slowly filling up. :D
    it never is.. :D

    info
doesn't matter as much if the cpu score goes down...as long as the gpu scores don't...you get far more for that side of the equation. vantage needs mhz to run, not cores. cores for over all score. (technically speaking)

damn, tried that trottle program on my laptop and it will allow me to change the multi...but not over clock it...

how faster can something be? i mean this time must include the bios loading time too.

as for boot time i think it may be just a few faster. only initially as there is still not trim and raid support at the same time

If I had an 920XM my 7 sec boot time would go as low as about 5-6 sec.
There is no accurate way to measure the POST time.
That's why it's a benchmark, don't expect to keep those settings or performance forever...

for booting times...you really need to have your system set the way it's suppose to be...then boot.
then boot with programs auto loading. two good ones... (cs4 and office 2007 - at the same time with all modules loading) i was trying to find my video of this but cant seem to find it. cs4 has like 24 mods and 2007 has like 9 or so.

this is equivalent to you doing a gaming benchmark at max settings.

a scaled down boot is like running 3dmark 01

    edit:
    nice two tone mod drake.
    edit:
you really should post your benchmarks to hwbot...(just a suggestion). i think you would have them going a bit crazy trying to beat you there. :D

Could you elaborate this a little? How is the system supposed to be?
And what do you achieve by this procedure?

    good deal.

    i did elaborate?

in other words....your not going to be sliming down your os every single day just to boot 2 seconds faster, only to find that half your os is now slower from all the sliming down you did.

and this test will actually show how fast you can boot and load programs, since that's what normal people do everyday...not sit around watching it boot.(although i did do allot of this while benching...lol...but in real life working..nope. stand by mode is my next best friend.. :)) most people didn't buy ssd's just for booting......they kind of bought them for the speed of opening & closing programs.... :)

you are able to change the multiplier, but not overclock? how is that? im assuming that you upped it. is it like the .29 Bios for the m17 that allowed you change the multiplier in the bios but it never applied unless u had an extreme Cpu? sucks that the only oc'ing going on now is the 920xm.

I used default bios settings for 920xm when i did this test.

thus you have to test on your R2 soon not R1. dont know how it will deal with intel ssd but on my ocz vertex it reports lower speeds (by 50mb.sec) in comparison with R1(hd tune)

It was stuttery/choppy for me. I ran it with directx 10 and it was a little better. It is probably just the Dell driver.

CODMW2 and Crysis does the same thing so I am pretty sure it is the dell video driver.

I have only seen the Heaven demo run smoothly on one machine. Was an insane rig put together by the Fry's store near me. Didn't do DX11 though, but DX10 was completely maxed out and had a low FPS score in the 70's. Even though it was water cooled, it still sounded like a Lear jet running.

xhero, where did you get the NBR Alienware sig thingy?

    mind did as well.

    side note:
this is why i was looking for runs with the tessellation on extreme 8xAA/16xAF 1920x1200. just to see if dual 5870m's could muster up at least 15 fps average.
