I'll try the extreme run John after I'm done running diagnostics
-
thanks!
but yours may not run true...till you get that little issue situated though... -

For what it is worth, I did that boot time I posted with my ram and cpu oc'd to help things along
that is a good time though! -
Here is everything maxed out.

anything under 15 is great in my book!
damn, it was a pretty close guess there.
thanks for this. -
So if I plan on replacing the stock thermal pads would one sheet of EK Thermal Pad - 160mm x 155mm x 0.5mm work for replacing all of the pads or do I need to also get a 160mm x 155mm x 1.0mm one too? My main concern is the 0.5mm might not be thick enough for the southbridge.. What do you guys think?

Why is this thread not stickied?
-
Johnksss, the phrase "set the way it's suppose to be" is very subjective. Not everybody uses the laptop for the same purpose and not everybody runs the same programs like others. That's why I asked you to define "suppose to be" (elaborate that phrase).
Also let me use your sentence's context and rephrase it a little bit.
for benchmarking (to run Vantage for instance)... the GPUs, the CPU, the RAM and all the parts of the computer should be set the way they are supposed to be when gaming, then run the benchmark.
Does it make it any sense? To me it doesn't, since the purpose of benchmarking is to achieve the highest possible score no matter what (remove parts like bluetooth/wifi modules, extra HDDs, RAM modules, lower screen brightness, lightening the OS as much as possible, etc) and disable features that would be necessary when gaming or doing other tasks, right?
When we run a program like boot timer, as a benchmark, in order to achieve the lowest boot time possible, we have to do whatever necessary to achieve this goal.
Why should this differ from the rest of the benchmarking procedures?
The sliming down of the OS is necessary for the purpose of this benchmark only. It's not meant for everyday use.
Let me disagree on that too.
The OS will loose functionality for sure but I am not aware of any case that it will make it loose speed, an example of slimming down that resulted to slowing down the OS would be welcome in case I am wrong.
Since there isn't any definition of "normal people" how can we make comparisons?
I totally agree with you on this one. I bought this SSD and consider it as one of the best upgrades I could do on this laptop. Booting is only one part, responsiveness and speed of the OS and the applications though is more important to me. Trust me I am in that category as well
Just to make things clear, there are many customizations somebody can do to improve the overall speed of a computer, even more are necessary though in order to achieve some serious benchmarking results and for this reason we shouldn't confuse those two different situations. -
nevermind..it wasn't meant for you to comeback on the defensive....
sorry, i made a mistake in explaining it. i thought it would be easily understood
side note:
the biggest upgrade for any computer right now..is an ssd drive.
since the hard drive is the main bottleneck that most people over look.
this is on an over all comparison world wide, from netbook to high end system from old computer to new computer.
nothing to debate here...it's just how it is.. -
Johnksss, I understand, share and respect your point of view.
I just wanted to explain that I used this program as benchmark, not as a way to measure my everyday's system configuration performance.
-
so it's just for the bench mark run only...or rather for your personal best booting score?
if so, i apologize for misunderstanding. -
Yes, given the hardware I wanted to see by tweaking the OS how fast it could boot. That's it, nothing more nothing less. So far my best boot time is 7.378 seconds with a T9600 at 3.4 GHz.
Johnksss, no need to apologize
-
it's out of respect that i do apologize.
but hey, i posted a link to some os builds just for what you were looking for...ask scook or mandrake, they may still have the links to them. these things were super scaled back. just for benching only. you could load one up on a test drive and give it a go..might be just what you need for you benching days. i never got around to trying them, so i completely forgot about it.
but damn, 7.3 is damn good!
is that from the time you push the power button? -
I' ll see if I can find them
Yeah it's pretty fast, I could go faster if I had the R2 with a 920XM
Unfortunately that time is after POST. POST time differs to most of us due to attached devices like external HDDs, express cards a RAID setup, etc
So we measure how long it takes to load all the necessary drivers for the OS to boot and minimum programs till it detects some percentage of inactivity to the CPU (I am not aware of the code of this program to be certain) -
where is this program?
-
You can find it in this thread with instructions as well as with other people's times

thanks, going to go download it now.
hummmm, that didn't go over so well...
296.385
ROTFLMAO! -
Except from the OS do you load any other virtual machines on boot?
LOL
-
Well I installed crysis and it did not play well at all. I'm still getting the stuttering even though fps says 25+. Left 4 dead 2 plays perfect though. Hmmmm not sure what to do. I may have to get my money refunded. My sli 280's in my r1 ran smoother
-
this is with the dell driver correct?
lol
the 30 second boot timer is on.
and it's the factory os. i did not think it was going to go on that long though...lol
not to mention the 15 programs loading in the task bar.haha
that was too damn funny!! -
Yea John with the Dell driver. I'm gonna take some videos tomorrow of what's going on maybe people are having the same issues, which would give me hope for drivers
-
When you install benchmarking games apps like Resi Even benchmark etc do you install onto the SSD or a backup drive?
-
It doesn't really make a difference where you install it. I use a seperate benching partition to keep windows as fast as possible. Installing it on an SSD, will not improve the score. Others have said that they use a seperate hard drive when it comes to benching.
-
^ thanks buddy looks like ill remove from my SSD tonight lol
-
The two 940xm chips I ordered are here. Going to install one of them in the crossfire 5870 machine in a few minutes.
-
Two? Damn are you trying to drive up the price.

Very interested on how these OC...

Me too. Not sure if mine will make it here in time before I take a vacation

I just went from 6 to midnight,
Can't wait to see the benches.

Loving the ability to boost my CPU voltage
4Ghz...check!
Now to get myself some considerable cooling as it idles around 55c with that voltage
I still need to find a sweet spot for benching - and I am in Wyoming for a few more weeks with out my kill-a-watt making it harder. Will most likely not due many benches with the crazy CPU oc's until JulyAttached Files:

Congrats Scook, nice to see that the qx9300 can finally hit 4Ghz on this laptop.
Of course I anticipate for some benches
-

I don't think it will be very stable here, but at least I could validate it lol
-
First run, vantage. CPU score seems about right, GPU score isn't quite where it needs to be. Anyway, don't have too much time for benchmarking today. I'll see if I can get a few game tests in later tonight.

Are you using the Eleet tools, or are you, to push it a little?
-
Good stuff there scook
Joker, is the 940 Overclocked on that run? -
eleet doesnt work for the r2.
-
Nice score.
Did you receive your replacement laptop yet? Also, is the 940 and extreme processor?
-
Yes, i would like to know too
Mine was around 16.8K on my highest vantage run, but i did get to 16.9K with a single GPU.
16.9K with 920XM
Uploaded with ImageShack.us -
Joker is going to have the first 17K vantage run on a laptop.
-
LOL, I'll believe that when I see it. No one is near it yet
Perhaps the Great Mandrake will get there
-
I meant CPU vantage score...
-
ehem *cough* I'm still here, and I can hear you...
-
That is very reachable with the 940XM and the proper cooling. Is it Overclocked in that run?
Joker can you give us a screen shot of HWinfo when overclocked? -
Oh yes, forgot your capabilities too
You and Mandrake are going to set the limit
-
Lol, I'm just hoping it gets here in the next few days or I'll be out of the game for at least a month.
-
A new 940XM and you post a benchmark without cpuz?
Just for you Joker...SHUNNNNN!
YouTube - Charlie The Unicorn -
LOL
10 Char... -
thats got to be the maddest youtube video ive seen this year ....weird... lol

New vantage record for me:
