right-click on computer, properties, device manager, expand display adapters. if you have two - optimus is there, one (nvidia) - not so much

    side track abit,

a SSD may raise the WEI scores, but does it actually improve gaming?

Do not see optimus option but there is an "Enable steroscopic 3D settings"

    Graphics clock: 675 Mhz
    Processor clock 1350 Mhz
    Memory clock: 1250 Mhz

    1536 MB GDDR5

    Driver from 12/10

Where else can I look for optimus support?

Actually what Dave meant was that if he got an SSD the score would be even higher, so the new lowest score would be that of the gpu which is 7.1, it doesn't mean the hard disk's score will be 7.1, it should be higher.
Plus, not all SSDs have the same speed so scores will vary.

another helpful tip may be to see the following:
control panel -> system and security -> power options
see the lowest plan. maybe you could test it, as guy on CES said no single word about optimus he just told that "system can be running around 4 hours without a charge"

Everything was pointing toward no optimus with the 3D version (including Bios shots/M17x R3 manual/previews)

Bad move by nvidia or alienware if 3D and optimus does not work together

You should the bios as final step, if intel GPU was "not detected" then it's clear really

loading in-game sometimes it helps. i use ssd for my OS and critical documents, like being able to boot up, stand by and shut down fast. also use ssd for futuremark scores and stuff. but put almost all my games on my second hdd. don't see any huge performance difference. just for bragging rights.

Maybe you need to install the Intel Graphics Drivers that a marked optional from the support site?

Also check device manager and see how many display adapters it sees.

Hi guys. New to the forums and new to pc gaming too. Found a lot of your comments to be reassuring as im new to all this. Awaiting my order of the basic m17x r3 to be dispatched but was wondering on what kind of perrformance I can expect to get from the standard set up. I upgraded a couple of components but nothing major.

    Thanks guys

I checked yesterday in best buy on new samsung lappy with 2630 and 525m - two display adapters, including igp. Looks like bios enablement might be the last remaining hope for optimus on 3d-enabled r3

A faster drive can help gaming where loading of maps etc comes into play.

I usually find I one of the first ready to go in MP gaming

if no optimus then i guess manually underclocking will be best option to extend battery life for now.

thanks, i was wondering if i should get a 128 SSD and use the oem 500gb hdd as a secondary. i always thought that it might have an impact on cpu or gpu performance. $400 for braggin rights seems abit on the steep side for me :D

If you really need battery life, do what I did: cancel and reorder non-3d version. Got 10% discount so the price is actually lower when you configure higher than $2250. Can give you my good rep's number if you want

agreed. money better spent on memory upgrade for example. I like my 96Gb Kingston SSD with automatic garbage collection built-in. Not as fast as my Intel SSD was though, but close.

I actually like 3d for gaming. Am crossing fingers Dell will release an update down the road to enable optimus. We'll see. I'll take that good reps number though if you want to pm it to me, cause I will be getting a 485 if its released soon enough.

They never said optimus will be available for 3D laptops and it's clear and simple in the manual that OPTIMUS NOT AVAILABLE with 3D laptops

We were just wishful thinking maybe it was manual typo or error but everything confirm it even Dell website say "OPTIMUS READY" not Optimus enabled

HDTV market "full HD Ready" what it means it can accept 1080p signal but it's not full HDTV actually etc, stupid marketing

Major fail on Dell's end to disable Optimus on the 3D models, there's absolutely no reason it should be disabled. If it's confirmed for certain that 3D+Optimus is a no no go mine may be going back in favor of an R2.

He's talking about his R2. The differance between the R2 and the R3 he's pointing out is 1 hour. Well see when more concrete info is posted.
