Just keep in mind, the heatpipe/exhaust will have to match the design used in the 17xR3. If it doesn't, be prepared to do some creative surgery/alteration.

 

They could just re-use the heatsink from their 460/6870m and 485m backplate. I doubt it will work though, Dell probably hasn't built in bios support yet.

how big is the difference between the processors on the m17x r3? is it a huge difference in performance to upgrade it?

thats good news. the battery life is a let down but it still a big improvement over the M15x and M17 r2 but still wished it was 5-6 hrs liked dell claimed.

i just hope the build holds up to time.

 

Hi Everyone,

I purchased a M17xR2 last month and I noticed the new M17xR3 is out. I do not mind spending the extra cash to get the R3 but is it worth it?

With reference to the 3D screen does the laptop come with the glasses needed to watch 3D stuff on my laptop? Also, does everything show up in 3D when I put the glasses on or only certain games/movies?

Battery will reach 5-6hours easily, someone got R3 here with switchable graphics http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/550930-m17xr3-6870-a.html

on "High performance" not "powersave" he got 4hours 30min~ with MAX brightness on and AlienFX on is pretty amazing imo

 

And switchable graphics with ATI without rebooting....that is the first I have seen that mentioned anywhere.

 

Reading an alienware forum about battery life is amusing to say the least

 

Seems like alienware's USA website is not allowing any purchases. When I click on any of the M17x's, it redirects me to a dell page.


Maybe they adding the 6970M?

Actually that is not accurate.....we are waiting on a yet unannounced chipset to do dual gpus with a mobile SB cpu......and unless it is a zm68 we are SOL

In the desktop world, you get dual gpus OR IGP, not both (until z68 comes out)

Perhaps that is why the M18x is not yet announced?

It seems I need to disassemble it to find out how it works...

 

Someone will have to do a dump of their system as there are no upgrade BIOS images online yet (may be soon if many issues are found)

dell service rep said that my lap is EDD to 2/13 as opposing to prev. date of 2/14 right on...

As a first time buyer of a gaming computer I am reading of gfx card comparisons" I ordered mine with the 460. Do you think as a total novice I am to experience issues that would cause me problems such as fps? If anyone could give possible examples of recent games I should have no problems with it would be much appreciated.

 

Realistically you shouldn't have any issues with any games other than Metro 2033 on Max/DX11 and Crysis Maxxed.

 

Thanks. Totally new to all this and was a bit worried what to expect/what to do. Obviously I expect it to come with a lot of software that will hinder it's performance but didn't know if I should mess with it as to an untrained eye it might not be that noticeable.

 

Does the M17xR3 have the option for a blu ray burner? I can't seem to find anything on the alienware site.

Also, can the previous M17x RGB screen be retrofitted?

 

No it does not have option of Bluray burner.

The problem is that the screen size is not the same so even if you get to power the screen and get all the connections, the M17X R3 has a 16:9 frame vs a 16:10 frame for the RGB screen. It obviously won't fit unless you cut out some plastic which might not even be possible since some sensors and other stuff are right there along the edge.

 

I get the screen, but why not the blu ray burner? Any respectable high end laptop has the option, why not the alienware?

 

Only Dell knows. I think there is no rational thought behind it. It will show up eventually as an option.

 

2720, 1080p 60hz, 460M. This is my 2nd notebook since my hp dv2610us. Glad that I've met all of you, and would like to Thank you for all the support throughout the month. I've learned alot throughout the last year on NBR, and finally bit the bullet in buying this.

 

I ordered my r3 1/19 with the 2630 instead of the 2720... From what everyone is saying it seems I may have made a mistake in not ordering it with the 2720? Is there going to be a large difference in overall / gaming performance with the 2720? Thanks in advance.

 

It does come with the NVIDIA 3D Vision bundle which includes glasses.

 

2630 is almost as good as the Extreme i7 from the previous generation (Faster if you don't overclock the extreme) how can this be a mistake?

The difference from 2630 to 2720 almost doesn't exist but you start getting noticeable boost with 2820 due the higher cache too

 

did any R3 owners get the below item? seems like dell is short changing us with alot of stuff. even the R3 manual is no longer the leather bound booklet.
