Wouldn't you know it! I'm missing that as well. So far, I didn't get my Power DVD CD and the blank card as well. Unless what they mean by that statement is that we have to provide our own.

Another thing I just discovered is my Bluray drive isn't reading Bluray discs! It reads DVDs but not Blurays. I'm sure it is a Bluray drive because it says so in the device manager.

I'm going to test out the rest of my system. Maybe theres other problems as well.

Did you notice it says "PowerXpress" for the 6970M? I guess that's AMD's version of optimus.

FWIW, I had this problem when I got my M15x back in 2009. I did some searching and found the software that came with the system couldn't do blu-ray. Upgraded software and all worked fine.

I had hoped they would stop doing that by now (not providing proper software with blu-ray upgrade). Maybe some of these others who have received their R3 can let us know if their blu-ray is working properly?

there not really a difference, because you pay extra for the 6970m card, but you dont get the 120hz screen (unless my rep can add them both) so a 460m + 3d screen is the same cost as a 6970m + 1080 60hz screen

Hmmmm, so the 6970m is definitely coming. Considering the loss of Optimus with 3D, this has me taking a second look. I am going to have to revisit the performance aspects. How long does it typically take to be available in the US after it hits the UK?

the R3 was release first in the UK store this time round i believe. i think it even reached the italian or french store before the US for some reason.

still hasn't reached the chinese store but apparently it will launch with the 6970 in early feb. would have waited for the 6970 anyway.

At that price point nvidia only has its 3d and cuda cards to play. im ordering myself one as soon as it hits mainland china

i checked with my rep before ordering, i asked her if the 6970 came out after i have gotten my system, will i be able to just top up the difference in price and get a tech to come and replace it. i had her check with her managers as well. and i was told that as long as it was still within the 30 days return period, they will be able to send a tech down with the 6970 and replace it, and all i need to do was to top up the difference. WOOT! just need to wait for it to show up on singapore website!

Wow 6970m is dirt cheap for the performance, i did post before that the difference is only 100$~ between GTX460 and 6970m

Remember that Dell charge 1499$ in the USA and 1699 POUND in the UK
Usually UK get ripped of as usual either way expect 6970m to be +200$ max over GTX460 from the US site

How can nvidia justify GTX485m price now? Even 6970m got their own version of optimus, Going Sli/CF for R2 users will be even worse if you get GTX485m

Ordering mine once 6970m is up

The bad news is that you cannot get the 120HZ screen with the 6970M. That sucks no 3D with ATI basically.

i had envy 17 3d for a while (returned already) with ati's 3d. honestly, while the 120Hz screen was bright and quite nice, the 3d was good only on static images (played some games like nfs undercover and depth was great only while the game was paused). live images were ghosty (crosstalk), even the demo clips that came with envy (megamind trailer and an nba short flic) were quite shallow and unimpressive. again, static images were quite good, though ghosting was present there too.

so it shouldn't be that bad not having it :)

I think I have read some posts suggesting that, upon receipt of their new R3s, these owners would perform a complete system reboot.

    If anybody can inform me:
    • What is the advantage of doing this (I'm assuming that it means returning the system to factory specs, and, as it's just come directly from the factory, I'm curious as to the purpose)?
    • Do Dell provide a disk for this purpose?

    Thank you

I wonder if you can call dell and they can alter the order so you can have the 120Hz screen. I'm about to try once the 6970M comes out, i'm wondering if the 3D is on all the time or if you have to turn it on via the glasses.

I know in the manual there's and option to get the 120Hz screen without the 3D bundle.

    Hi all

Don't know if this has been posted here before, but the 6970 IS currently available at the French Dell site ( Dell Site Officiel - Ordinateurs Portables, Ordinateurs | Dell France) for 230 euros more than the 460M.

The base configuration is the GTX 460M (no 6870 available).

This is how it is described : "AMD® Radeon™ HD 6970M 2 Go GDDR5 avec PowerXpress."

Also, for pricing, keep in mind that the price figures are even higher in euros than USD or CAD (base system 1999 euros). I would expect a 200-300$ upgrade from 460M for this card in America.

The day the 6970 is available maybe isn't so far away. Anyways, my GTX 460M is already in production and I will happily sacrifice some gaming performance in return for 3D capability. Just thought some of you might want to know. :)

Does Dell flat out refuse to give the 120Hz screen, with an AMD chip, even if you're fine with not having 3D?

Out of interest how inferior is the 460 card compared with others on offer? I have very limited knowledge on the subject but slightly worried that I may feel disappointed with the card with the reaction to others becoming available?

Not sure about the 6870M, but from what i heard it's slightly worse than the 5870M, the 460M is definitely great but i'm worried about playing games in 3D since the frames will be cut in half. from the 460M review most games average 35-50 frames on the high settings.

Thanks Huuy.I have to admit. I have played games mainly on console before so it's all new to me. I am looking at various mmo games to play possibly(dc online, wow etc). What is the approx frame rate where it becomes unnoticeable that the fps is an issue?

Is this noticeable to an absolute novice. Worst case scenarios that I feel underwhelmed by the experience of the computer. I don't have much interest in the absolute latest games but would like the option. For example I hear crysis Is quite demanding. Would the standard m17x r3 have any probs with this?

Even the 460m shouldn't have any issues playing almost every game at High/Max/Ultra, the 2 exceptions are Metro 2033 on Max/DX11 and Crysis Maxxed.

You know - this might not be the greatest comparison, but take a look at this video an 11xR2 owner posted earlier today. The video features a Crysis game play section - doesn't look bad IMO and it is on the 11xR2. Now, if its playable on that system I have no doubt that the base 17xR3 will do just fine.

If you are a benchmarking number chaser who wants to put their system in the fridge - ok, thats a different story. You might want to go with something else other than the base model.

If anyone is considering buying the M17X R3 with the 460M check out this Youtube Channel

    YouTube - ItsThaaAzn's Channel

So far there's only 3 videos but he said he will be updating more soon, he needs to get more games :).

    I would say above 30FPS.

The GTX 460M is far below what you need to game at 1080p + 3D, with decent settings. That's a very important fact, which needs to be said more.

^^^^^ Kevin im not new to graphics cards/OC'ing and all that... but im new to 3D gaming

Does 3D gaming really use more resources than regular gaming? OR will you get the same fps with 3d on or off?

If theres a diffrence... how big is it ? percentage wise

If anyone has experience with 3D Gaming please Share, as this interests me. :) Thanks!
