Just wondering...have any of you guys who are into doing these mods, performed "lapping" on your heatsinks???

Lapping these heatsinks would be very cumbersome to do and yield minimal gains - especially compared to the effort required. I would not bother. Making sure your heatsink is seated well will make a much a bigger difference.

    Hello Handsomerob

Thanks for all the PIC's and Info :) .

Your GPU temps are pretty low, what was your ambient temperature when you ran these tests?

    Info:

I've done repasting my Graphix cards GPU and RAM with MX-4, Temps droped by ~15oC on avarage.

Running Furmark at 1920x1200, Extreme Burning enables, Stability Test and Full screen, 22 minute run, I get 86oC and 88oC, Max on each card respectively. (compared to 101oC and 113oC Before, after 10 minutes) (Worst Case)

Ambient Temperatures here are 26oC to 28oC at the moment.

I'm pretty Happy with these result.

Hey folks :) Was wondering whether peeps think these would be better Dell CPU GPU Heatsink Solution Thermal pad Copper shim (eBay item 170532199092 end time 24-Dec-10 04:07:28 AEDST) : Computers
instead of thermal pads for my M17x R1 (QX9300- GTX 280M SLI- 8GB 1333 Mhz RAM- 2x 500GB HDD.) Im finding that both the qx9300 and the gtx280m's are cracking 90 degrees. Hit 94 degrees C doing 3 min stress test on QX 9300 :O Hit 92 degrees C on single GTX 280M playing FEAR 2 for about half an hour. Ambient temps 28-30 C as is quite warm here in South Australia atm. I have no cooler pad. CPU is now undervolted to 1.05-1.062V and is a lot cooler (8-14 C) and seems very stable. This has helped bring GPU temps down very slightly too.

However I would like more, partic as its only going to get hotter yet, as summer is just starting here.

Going thru this thread and the R2 cooling mod thread I think Ive decided on MX4 paste and the fujipoly pads. However those copper shims would work out cheaper than a sheet of the fujipoly pads as I would need 3 or 4 shims (gpu's cpu and possibly MCP79) so be $12-16 and the fujipoly would be $17 plus whatever it costs to send to aust (not cheap by the sound of what reborn2003 is saying lol)
What do you peeps think? pads or shims please? Which places to use shims if i buy them?
Lastly nice to break my posting virginity lol. Read hundreds of pages over the last 2 weeks (how long Ive had the m17x lol) Great to see a heap of aussies too, makes me feel more at home :D

[EDIT] If someone can tell me how to do a sig here too please? Im having trouble finding it in the user CP. Remember reading somewhere that it has something to do with PM's but i cant find that either lol
[2nd EDIT] NVM Ive figured out its coz im a new member here lol

The R1 does not need copper shims. I would just repaste (I use OCZ Freeze) and raise the back edge up so the intakes can actually get some air to them. I have a QX9300 and at stock volts it does not exceed 80c ever

Thank you for response scook9 :D
I have a 12 month warranty with the supplier (not dell) and I kind of need that supplier to agree this is a good idea. (actually im asking him to do it while im sending it back due to other problems lol) Hes a pretty cool guy but dunno if he'll go for paste where theres supposed to be pads, I can but ask. So I kind of need to know whether the copper shims or thermal pads would be better. So I can present that as a second option if he doesnt like the paste only option. As he has to stand behind the machine for a year, Ill have to respect his decision if he veto's paste only solution ;)

Unless of course you meant by just re-paste where paste is already and leave the dell pads in? General consensus seems to be the dell pads are pretty cruddy?

Leave the pads everywhere that there is pads. re-apply the paste on the GPU die (not vram) and CPU die.

hey guys, old thread but just finished doing this and am very happy.
3d mark 11 is 4711 with no voltage mods. CPU is 105/95 TDP (no bios oc), GPU's are Core 850, Mem 1150. never gets above 75c so plenty of room left.

Cooling mat is the U3 18", Tuniq TX-4 used on CPU. GPU's have thermal pads and Tuniq.

    cool = cooling mat
paste = TX-4 and new pads

    >> 49 TDP/TDC, wprime 1024
    no cool, no paste 74.5c
    cooler, no paste 67.3c
    cooler, paste 59.3c
    >> 62 TDP/TDC, wprime 1024
no cool, no paste 80.3 stage 4 fan
cooler, no paste 76.8 stage 3 fan
cooler, paste 72.3 stage 2/3 fan

    >> GPU 700/1000 Furmark 800x600 multi GPU
no cool, no paste 88.7 stage 4 fan
cooler, no paste 81.2 stage 4 fan
cooler, paste 72.9 stage 3 fan
    >> GPU 800/1100 Furmark 800x600 multi GPU

    @Handsomerob

Hi, I wanted to thank you for the pics - I finally got an idea of how much pressure the retention mod does, it's pretty crazy actually! My heatsink's steel holders never bent that much, even after using a copper shim (for an Elitebook 8530 mod).

I also wanted to ask whether the laptop/GPU is still functional? I wonder about long term reliability with so much pressure on the chip (mine's a G96m core, smaller than the die shown in your mod). If it works without problems, then I'll screw my heatsink fully into place, as I've loosened the screws a bit, being afraid of a cracked die or bent PCB or some other catastrophic failure :) ...

    Hi all

I'm planning to re-paste my GPUs and CPU tomorrow, and have been monitoring my temps on IDLE, and found something quite stange.

I took a picture of HWInfo and found quite different numbers on the GPU and Memory Clocks in each of my cards.

Is this normal? do I have to re-flash latest vBIOS?

    Here is the pic:

Hi, Draiken, your temperatures are very high for idle. Your system could use some cleaning and probably a repaste.

As for your vBIOS, open GPU-Z and in the BIOS Version field it should read
012.020.000.027.037640 if you have the revised version.
If not, download it from Dell support site and flash.

    Katalin,

a quick OT. I have an M17 R2 with dual ATI HD 4870. My installed vBIOS version is 011.022.006.000.034989. I couldn't find a vBIOS on the DELL site for my cards. Any idea?

    Thanks and regards,
    Mario

Mario, Dell didn't revise the mobility 4870 vBIOS.
That's the one you should have, you're good ;)

Awesome R&D man, When this semester is over I am going to try out your c-clip mod on my R3 and see if there is a difference in temps.

Yes, as I stated on the post, I was about to perform the re-paste.

I got some Arctic Silver 5 and followed the instructions, my CPU temps went down to 50s-60s °C and my graphic cards to low 50s °C on IDLE.

I haven't had time to properly monitor my temps, but what I actually noticed is that I no longer notice fan spin-ups while watching videos.

It is my first re-paste, so I was very concerned on the technique, and the amount of paste used, did it once, powered up the lap for a few minutes, checked temps, and re-did it again.

I noticed I didn't put enough paste on the CPU and GPUS because the heatsinks did not have any paste marks on them. I cleaned a applied paste again and got those preliminary temps.

I'm hoping to have some free time one of this days to properly run furmark for a while and check temps under stress.

I do have the updated vBIOS from the dell webpage, but still my clocks are all over the place while running HWInfo showing 300, 400 or 100 Mhz, also if I don't have GPU-Z open, HWInfo does not detect anything from my second card, just lists it with no monitors available. CF is working and gaming performance is OK.

    Any ideas?
