Since you're using an optimus setup, the dGPU is turned off when not in use, so either the 1060 or 1070 should give you the same battery life.

A 1060 is powerful enough to render most games at 60 fps at ultra settings at 1080p resolution. If you're talking about price/performance ratio, the 1060 is the best upgrade.

No problem man! A 1060 at 900p resolution will last you multiple GPU generations into the future. Let us know if you need any help for the setup.

I can attest to the 330W PSU working perfectly on Pascal cards of this grade, and Pascal cards have good power management in low power environments, even though it sometimes screws up like in stated above ;) it just stayswstays with P8 state permanently. With P4000 I am able to browse and perform general tasks for around two hours with 0% wear battery (I was really lucky on used laptop market :) )

i also have a philips 49" 5K monitor, will the 1060 have enough power to at least play CS GO on it?

Ah, but with the Pascal GPU he will need PEG, and I'm not entirely sure that 120Hz upgrade won't be needed...

Absolutely. I'm currently using two Bravia screens, 46 and 52, and I can play Borderlands 3 on any of them at around 80fps, my P4000 is at around your 1060 performance-wise, so enjoy your gaming :)

Pascal doesn't require the 120 Hz screen, but I'd personally recommend it since all games look better at 120 fps. The difference between a 60 Hz screen and a 120 Hz screen is massive, and I'll only settle for 120 fps now. 60 fps looks slow and laggy to me.

Pascal cards will work with an optimus setup. You do lose performance in an optimus setup though, and this goes for any graphics card. The performance difference is only significant though if you're trying to do 120 fps in a CPU intensive game.

Replacing the panel and LCD cable aren't absolutely necessary for the GTX 980m, 1060, or 1070 upgrades. These cards will work in an optimus setup. Regardless, the 120 Hz screen provides the superior experience, so I'd replace the panel and cable anyway.

If you already have the 240 watt PSU, you're already ready to go with the 980m.

Yes. If you want the 120 Hz panel, you just need the panel and the eDP cable. I posted the part numbers in a previous post, but I'll post them again for you ;).

The part number for the 120 Hz panel is GN36T.

The part number for the eDP cable is N392W.

Got Everything already bought, I even took advantage of Aliexpress coupons to bring costs down, finally I ended up buying a 1060m on Ebay for 298€, plus the 120 Hz Screen(95€) and the EDP cable(12€) plus 3 pipes heatsink(32€) and 3x8GB(63€) of ram in Aliexpress.
Will end up with a nice beast. Will seek help for the driver's install later.
    Thanks guys.

I've actually never replaced my thermal pads. I'm still using the ones that were on my GTX 860m that my laptop originally came with on the 1060 currently installed in it. I haven't noticed any degradation in thermal transfer from these pads over the last 6 years, so either thermal pads degrade extremely slowly or not at all. I know other people recommend replacing thermal pads, but I don't think that's necessary. Just reuse the ones you already have and save yourself some money. The main focus should be on cooling the GPU core since that's what sucks power.

Just inspect them. If they are crunchy o flaky then yeah, their time has come. I personally prefer to change the pads to some high thermal conductivity (the stock pads tend to be not the highest quality and the paste on the core is in most cases average). At least consider putting some high conductivity paste on the core. I keep going like a broken record on every thread around here, but Thermal Grizzly Conductonauts is the best bet for thermal transfer on the core. Even on high encumbrance of the GPU I barely exceed 60-70 degrees

And if you're looking for the absolute best non-metal paste, go for Phobya Nanogrease extreme. That stuff is amazing.

@MrMogwai I'm constantly championing Phobya Nanogrease as well like how you champion Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut. Phobya Nanogrease is my goto paste.

Guys. I got the GTX 1060m, it did just arrive, but still waiting for the 120hz screen and the triple pipe heatsink.
You recommend me to install it With the standar GTX 765 heatsink and configure it or I wait for the rest of parts to arrive?

    thanks

You can use the stock 2 heatpipe heatsink for configuring stuff, although I'd just wait for all the parts to arrive to install it, just because you can get everything done in one go.

Before you install any of those parts, you do need to perform some configuration adjustments. You'll need to set your Ranger to pure UEFI boot. You can do this by going into the boot tab in the BIOS and setting the boot list option to UEFI, then disable the legacy option ROM as well. You also need to disable secure boot.

If you don't perform these steps, your laptop will boot up to a black screen when you install the 1060.

Get a recent version of the drivers. If you don't want to meddle with driver modding, I can provide you some of my modded INFs that I still have. I'm using nvidia driver version 441.66 and it works great with the 1060.

If you want the newest driver, I can guide you through modding it to force it to install.

If you are happy with 441.66 then I should have no problem with them. Prefer to take the "sure" path.
I got right now 425.31 as GEFORE EXPERIENCE tells me.

You'll need to download version 441.66 from Nvidia's website. Geforce Experience only downloads the latest version. Also to force the install of the drivers, you'll need to disable driver signature enforcement. There are a few ways to do this, but this is the way I do it:

Open up command prompt with administrative priviliges, then type in: bcdedit /set testsigning on. You'll need to restart your computer after pressing enter for changes to take effect.

After you install the modded driver, you can reenable driver signature enforcement by opening up command prompt again with administrative priviliges, then type in: bcdedit /set testsigning off. Like before, you'll need to restart your computer after pressing enter for changes to take effect.

Let us know if you need any help!

    Already disable driver signature.
    Now:
So, first I install the 1060.
    Then install the 441.66
    Then the modded INI file?

The modded INFs are required to force the drivers to install, otherwise the driver will fail to install.

Basically you have to repackage the driver installer with the modded INFs.

I'm surprised on the temps that I'm getting. 65 degrees playing BF One....think could have save some mone of the heatsink.
Anyway, amazing performance for my Fenix's Ave Ranger

Well the 4930 and 4940 are fully unlocked CPU’s for overclocking. The 4900/4910 are probably better value as they are basically the same but have less overclocking options. The 49xx CPU’s have more L3 cache and probably a higher clock speed than your 4700. I’d have to look up the specs again to be sure on the clock speeds
