Heard about that bug, but I don't trust myself not to screw something up and brick the BIOS and have to reflash it, and the 4700MQ has performed very nice in my AW17, and the Clevo has even better cooling theoretically

Fair enough, I always used to have two, one for trial basis and one for actual stable clock speeds. Sadly due to there being no limitations in current draw this hack can actually kill your cpu if you go too high.
Needless to say my work laptops survived the tests lol.

Those MSI 1070s are good for 200+W if cooled well enough (I cheated and watercooled - see my sig haha). The slot is out of spec for power draw beyond 200W, and firmware board power limits are another thing.

They also "undervolt" really well too. With a voltage cap in combination with something like a +175 core offset I was able to get them close to 2200Mhz still with a slight (1.05V) undervolt. 1.013V at ~2100mhz. Down below 0.9V at stock. The freed up power headroom helps performance. 1.062V on these cards is a massive waste.

Unfortunately, it seems as if the seller I bought the gtx 1080 off has cancelled the order, the price did seem to good to be true anyway.

I have ordered a gtx 1070 mxm from ebay with the sli connector, will be upgrading my clevo to that instead for the meantime...

Its reassuring to hear I'm not the only one having issues with ebay.
    That sucks man.
Did you get a good deal on the 1070? Is it a MSI?

I got ripped off lol, I was bidding on the gtx 1070 the bid went to $465 which is actually a decent price for an sli connector card. Then eBay drop import charges on me totaling $150, making the total price of the card and delivery $770!

I could have bought a gtx 1080 with the price, what an absolute rip off.

Wow, what a joke lol. I have a buyer refusing to pay because an item's shipping went up $5 at final purchase, and another telling me they will refuse the delivery if I ship it purely because I was to busy to ship the day after purchase lol

I told the guy, located in the U.S that I would pay the next day as I was hit with such a bill, he started getting angry at me lol.

It seems people in the U.K are a bit more patient when it comes to purchasing things they are more relaxed on payment, maybe because eBay isn't their only source of income :p

Also I never use paypal credit either so I have to get all my money in the bank asap, there are times where I ask my boss for three times the amount I'm getting paid!

My boss is a chill guy and I'm lucky to have a job there too, this modding stuff is directly related to what I do at work.

Well, you have 48 hours to pay, so that seems reasonable. In all, $770 is about the average price for a MSI 1070 (off Ebay ofc), someone is selling a clevo one in the forum for 425EUR rn, but again, its the odd shaped clevo model, which is annoying

I don't really like dealing with international shipping, too much can go wrong and its to big of a hassle for me. Yeah, I like the idea of PayPal credit, but I dont think I wil ever use it.

Youre lucky that you get to mod for your job, hope the 1070 does you well

In other news, my P377SM-A gets here Thursday or Friday, I'm so excited!

Thanks, I mainly deal with hardware anyway, so soldering ic's and stuff is my forte, this is one reason I want to get rid of this annoying 330w power cap on the alienware 18!

If that p377sm-a has a 3d lcd connected that means it's eDP, I'm not joking when I say this but you could probably put a gtx 1080 sli in that rig! For the future that machine could have a 4940mx and a 1080 sli imagine that, you'd be on @Khenglish level lol.

I doubt I'm going to past 980m sli in it, I'm thinking 1070 sli in my DM-G and then take the 980m and put it in the SM-A, seems perfect! I'm will get a unlocked CPU eventually, but its only going to be playing GTA V. (The config is in my signature if you're interested)

Congrats, was only a matter of time for CFL

Not fun. Better with BGA clocks (i7-8750H) to show how crippled the cooling is in todays Jokebooks  The Todays Junk can't even finish the Cinebench R15 run at 3.9GHz on all 6 cores!

@Papusan @Grant B Gibson oh I will don't worry I'll take it to 5ghz just need to get the confidence to delid it with my razor lol.
Ill have that done soon though then I'll bench.

Also I got the coffee lake bios for the clevo P870dm-g but sound is not working and it randomly shuts off which is really annoying. Seems like the bios is incomplete, I have no clue on how to mod these bioses only @Prema does. I flashed it with my spi programmer and all went smoothly too, never understood why the verification failed...

Maybe a c states issue causing the random shutdowns who knows.

I think I may need another mobo lol my internal display is not working, tried countless vbioses and have no idea what's wrong. I modded the laptop with this issue in the first place thinking its just a lcd problem even though I tried another lcd which still comes up blank.
Could be the lcd wire or it could be the mobo

Try TaoBao, eBay, or maybe AliExpress.
Also, note that you have to run this in Optimus mode, and that you need an AMD heatsink, and that you need to mod it

The 18 doesn't even have an eDP port first of all, and you would need to solder traces from somewhere (ideally the display port) to even make an eDP connector

My laptop will crash when i take heaven loading into graphical card with 150w ,but if the power is 130w or less,it will work well.
it can run 3dmark or 3dmark11,but can't run furmark long time on same setting.
Is my laptop can't support 150w mxm power?

Furmark is the best testing tool I know. I get the exact same fps as you in furmark with + 200mhz on core and memory at 115w tdp.

There is something wrong with your card.

With were this conversation is going, is it safe to say your experiment with 1070 and 1080 on a18 was a failure? If so, isn't the title a tiny bit misleading?

No, because you can use the 1070 just fine in the AW 18, you just need an unlocked BIOS. The downside is that you need to mod the heatsink and run Optimus, meaning no SLI

Faulty project doesnt translate in the slightest to a faulty project.

GTX 1080 still hasnt been tried to my knowledge but the 1070 has, BUT because no eDP is present you have to use SG mode. Its a deal breaker for some, but not all.

Cool. I just found out that 3.0b of 1070 is available. Also has a different layout. Maybe that will be more compatible. I have an a18 and will wanna try it out in the near future thats why I'm making all these enquiries. Any thoughts on the MXM 3.0b or gtx 1070? And does anyone have any suggestions on a custom heatsink for it? Or is 1060 a safer and more foolproof option

There is the Eurocom 1070 which is 3.0b and also the zotac 1070 which is 3.0b but I think the MSI 1070 falls under the 3.0b+ category
