Hey Joker, how much were the 580s you're replacing the 6990s with?

Excellent results Shiandy, thanks for posting them up. interesting to see that comparing your results to mine, the xtreme cpu plays little or no difference in some of those benches. If I disable DOF in Metro, I get similar results to yours.

    + rep for you!

There is actually a thread dedicated to discussing the Catalyst 12.1 preview and things are looking promising compared to the fiasco with Catalyst packages after 11.8 or 11.9. The part that had me puzzled was the reference to the 7800M and the Wimbleton XT/Pro 7900M video cards. After thinking more about it, it seems you were sharing your excitement about the new technology coming our way soon and not responding to another person's post. Sorry, it just took a bit for it to sink into my thick skull. :)

I'll have to check out the 12.1 preview on the M17x R2, M5030 and the AMD-powered desktop PC.

I feel like I'm being trolled by AMD. Exclusively used them since the 4000 series on desktop and spend $1000's on cards. As of now, I would not recommend them again.

Here in spain the nvidia choice is still so expensive 1200€.

Lets just hope that Dell can release a better "Dell-ized" version of AMD's own drivers......at least they should be ensuerd of working on our systems without removing and features, such as brightness control....

I spent most of today with Tech support on this no fan issue, they had me reflash bios, power drain, pull cmos. Of course no change, they said if they do not have a fix by Friday when i get home they will either replace the parts. I assume mobo, and cards or build a new one. If that is the case Iam leaning towards the new one. I take it the problem is only with a percent of the m18x's? not all the 6990's?

    Hey alienwolf,

Sorry to hear about your system being affected as well. Hopefully they build you a new one and it doesn't have the issue. Or they can build you one with the SLi 580M GTX GPUs instead. Mind you the only real thing that can be done is to wait if you have the patience, Dell/Alienware are working on a fix now. Only a matter of time however it is painful to wait that is for sure.

Mine is fine still, touch wood. Almost finished the MW3 and BF3 campaigns. They are so short as you all know, so it just shows how much time I have been gaming lately lol. Ah I just don't find the time anymore these days.
I just upgraded the ram again yesterday lol :p

No more upgrades until the New GPUs come out ;)

Oh and Dell Bill - I'm ready to test the new Dell driver now! ;) :D

    Cheers. :)

No wake from sleep, gotta hard boot the system, no brightness control on some drivers ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/8112670-post897.html)

    Also:

Current Issues and Defects with AMD HD 6990M
    a. Overheating and thermal shutdown
    i. Fans not functional from cold boot
ii. Fans do not spin up until temps are too high
    b. Inconsistent CrossFire function (randomly disabled, clock speeds not in synch)
    c. Display corruption and flickering, unexpected intermittent dimming and yellow display hue
    d. Intermittent failure to wake from S3, reboot required to restore performance
    e. What is the tentative resolution plan and timeline?
    f. Total GPU failure (failure to POST, BIOS beeps)

Driver version 11.11 and higher all have issues with mobile xfire configurations. (BSOD)

Personally I only have the driver issue (as in I wish there were newer than 11.9 stable drivers for my GPUs that could enable xfire for Skyrim, etc)

Current issues of major concern would be thermal shutdown as the system fans are not engaging as they should when the system is booted from a "cold boot" - meaning temps will rise until your laptop shuts itself down to protect itself.

Regarding Dell's new driver,, we should be something fairly soon from Team Dell as it seems they have identified the root cause of the problems above....as soon as I know (or anyone else for that matter) I will post it up here.

Sounds normal to me. If you have a browser open with flash, you will probably see the temps rise up to around 65c on one gpu...then the fans will kick in to bring it back down to 50c ish....then the other card will gradually creep up to 65c before its fans kick in to bring it back down.....it will "cycle" like this and is perfectly normal.

What isnt normal is for the temps to go above that without any fan activity to cool the gpu's - hence a shutdown after they would rise too high without cooling.

    Seems you are ok :)

The fact that they are kicking in is a good sign. The problem starts when they dont bring temps down at all due to absolutely no fan activity.

    GPU-z

You just open it twice, open the dropdown box at the bottom of the gpuz window and select the other card....hey presto, you can now monitor both cards simultaneously!

Just so you know, it looks like Dell is releasing an updated system bios (A05) very soon that will fix the thermal shutdown issue.

Thanks for the words of advice, if they are close to a fix I hope it is real soon. Tech support is sending out cards and mobo for a fix. Would like the software fix than the unit completely torn down. If they post the new bios and it fix's it I'll cancel the repair.

Mobo will fix the "no fan on 2nd GPU" issue. Cards won't matter. I guess take the new ones while they have your box open. You can defer the service call until Monday or Tuesday and see if we get the new BIOS up by end of week. Just a thought.

OK. So here's some scoop. We have the driver ready to post. We are working through getting the drivers up to the appropriate product pages on Drivers & Downloads. No clue on how long that's going to take (don't ask).

In the meantime, I just sent over a request for a copy of the driver to share with you guys via email. While I was writing this post, I got confirmation I can have the driver to share here- literally. I will get with my man Stevie in email and get him the driver. He can do whatever it you guys do to share files that you're not supposed to have.

Just to be clear, we are not doing anything clandestine here. It's just we're having a bit of a tool issue getting new drivers posted, so we're working around it with this community to get some early feedback. It's a kind of beta...sorta.

Technical note: You may get a BSOD (0x116 I think). If you get that, install it again.

Note II: This driver does not resolve the 2nd GPU fan issue. That will be the BIOS release coming very shortly.

Filename is a bit confusing. 8.902-111012a-128052C-Dell

I'm guessing the middle number is the version? Just a guess. It's a zip and I have not opened it yet. Actually in a demo with Intel now being shown Ivy Bridge. Very interesting, and don't ask me any questions. :)
