try mining bitcoins on an Nvidia card. The desktop 570 is slower than an ATI 4890.

Hehe... that might just be worth it.

Are the 6990s just OC 6970s?

Erm, the GTX 560m even falls behind the AMD 5870 whilst testing Mafia 2 on notebookcheck, not to mention how it compares to a single 6970m........ http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-560M.48313.0.html and it also falls a good 44% behind the 6970 with 3dMark11 - infact, it falls behind a single to single 6970m on most benches......now it may scale a bit better in sli but its still a weaker card IMHO....its also ranked a good 12 places or so below a single 6970m

You STILL really wanna wait for it to be announced? LOL

(no fanboi-ism here, im just checkin' the stats an posting it as I see it!)

    Certainly agree with that.

The arms race is continuing unabated. Which makes a mockery of paying the premium for their latest cards, when you can save a bundle by being patient and waiting until they are surpassed.

Articles written by Fuad, that don't carry a link to an actual source are what have given Fudzilla it's shaky reputation. ;)

Seems very likely as I see in your sig 460M SLi and from what I have read and known they are not going to charge "extra" for the slight upgrade but hey its Nvidia you can never say anything for sure. But I hope you do get the upgrade it would be nice to have someone here with it hands-on and you would be the first one :D

It is like saying "Hey there is going to be more tornadoes in the Midwest this summer, but we're not sure when". Gee ya think!?

Thanks for the article though Aki :)

580 is another story - I'd buy that...if it weren't stupid expensive (which it probably will be).

Any rumours on the 5000m or 5010M (obviously precision), Aikimox?
    ...or even pricing?

man I'd love to get even one of those into an r3 or 18x! Even if it meant 100% manual fan control lol.

I'm working on it. Forget the 5000M it's far more expensive than the far more powerful 5010M. As for the Precision pricing - PM/email me. :)

What is it with AW and these lame Nvidia options? The 460 and the 560M are 'weak' cards and are not justified in a top end rig like the M18.

If AW wish to retain the mantle of the 'fastest notebook in the universe' they need to address this. I'd love to know how many peeps went for the 460M sli over the xf 6970's. Not many I'd wager. (Migraine glasses excepted)

The main reason we're getting these watered down options is price. AW dont want to eat the cost of putting in cutting edge cards as it will interfere with their pricing strategy.

True, but then why buy the m18? Go with a cheaper machine. It makes no sense putting a small engine in a ferrari.

They don't want to "Alienate" (pun intended) the smaller user base who are not that hardcore . To tell you something 485's weren't offered because SLi was way too hot for the machine and ofcourse the price which would literally drive away a lot of business. So for a broader scope of audience 560's for summer then later on in couple of months maybe you see 6990M? 580M? or..... ;)

Untrue. CUrrent Ferraris are NOT the most powerful cars on the road yet outsell some exotic brands 15-1. WHy? because its the overall package not the power. Nvidia offers a few things right now that AMD does not and its 3D and cuda etc etc. WHy give alienware a monster card driving the price up through the roof and get less sales? Not a bright idea when youre competing with AMD and making it harder for customers to decide. Let AMD have the Monster card market for those who want to pay for it. Nvidia has a great rep and its loyal customers and will probably outsell the amd eaisly because of cost.

    Win= Nvidia.

No good having a 3d card with no 3d screen LOL and unless you have a 3d external tv or monitor, its a waste. :) If your a "3d fanboy" then great but IMHO, 3d is very gimmicky and isnt really that good anyway..... If you absolutely NEED cuda, then thats a good point but otherwise, value and performance gives the crown to AMD currently, in my book at least!

With an external 3D screen/TV you can do 3D with an AMD card.

For me, its not Nvidia or AMD.....its just about "bang for my pound".....AMD delivers on that front, being more affordable. For the large amount more, I can live without Nvidia's slight advantages in such areas.

They also bring cards to knees before tessellation can even be utilized

You aren't going to see a major difference w/ tessellation until cards as a whole are more powerful enough to handle 'em, just like when DX10 first came out, cards could barely utilize DX10 features. It took a whole 'nother gen

If you look at Cayman, it was already vastly improved for real world use. The next gen should finally make tessellation actually used in real world applications

You mean 580m vs 6990m. That would be a fairer fight, considering the 485m is already a match for the 6970m

The 485m has a performance of 5-10% above the 6970m. I would imagine the 580m will own the 6970.

Having looked at their two respective flagships (590 vs the 6990), the 590 is the king of the hill. The nod goes to Nvidia for performance but for value the AMD is the clear winner.

^The gtx 590 and AMD 6990 are pretty much dead even in reviews...

In pretty much every review I've read, they were dead even (7-7 each) on tests won. The gtx590 does run cooler and is smaller and quieter, so I guess you could give it the nod for being nicer that way, buut it doesn't actually perform higher much (if) at all. Also, they both cost the same (competitve pricing on Nvidia's side for once) - around ~700$

I do agree with the 580m>6970m. AMD will try and compete with it with the 6990m hopefully. The 570m is supposed to be weaker than the 485m slightly, and hopefully with compete with the 6970m as a price point, since the prices of the 485m are ridiculous

If you're talking about the desktop side of things, the 6990 is actually faster. It becomes more evident at higher resolutions that require a multi-monitor setup.

And it's obvious that the 580M > 6970M. The 580M's real competitor would be the 6990M.

Likewise ... if people are proposing that the 580m will be 10-20% faster then the 485 ... how would and OC 6970 compare ? (recognizing that you can OC a 580 as well, but discounting that ...)

depending on how well the 580 overclocks, probably 15-25% behind. the GF114 is the best overclocking fermi core to date. i expect the mobile version to follow. its all up to the 6990M to compete with the 580.

Still waiting for news of the 560M in any Alienware. Toshiba, ASUS and others have been shipping them for some time now.

I guess maybe Dell bought the remaining 460Ms at a nice discount to use as a base offering.
