I kind of think drivers have got to be part of barrier here. It will be interesting to see how things look in a couple months or so.

4-piped HS is not ready yet and it won't be covered by warranty.

As for paste, it's up to you but I'd remove the pads and use paste on memory chips as well.

    Hello Koelle

Was an overclock feature included in the Catalyst Control Center?
or a program like AMD Overdrive included on the factory hard drive? ( for gpu not cpu )

Did I hear correctly that a factory overclock feature would be included
    with the 6990m?

    Maybe I'm mistaken about this.

    Thanks

As speedy says, don't worry, they're 6990m, only GPU-Z reads them as 6970m. Can you upload the VBIOS here?

And a vantage run of CF and especially single card would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Edit: What the...? This post got somehow delayed by hours!!!

guys anyone here tried to flash 6990m vbios to 6970m?..

    @svl7
You're the only one who put back your 6970m to life when you bricked flashing not compatible vbios!! +rep :)

Can you tried flashing 6990m vbios to your 6970m?

As awesome as unlocking the extra disabled stream processors on a 6970 would be, I cannot imagine they could be software unlocked. It wouldn't make sense for ATi to have disabled them unless there were cooling issues or such. If I had designed the card, I would made them physically disabled, but that is just me. Still I will +Rep anyone who tries turning their 6970 into 6990. I hope you don't brick your card

Thanks bro. The regular 6970m has definitely only 960 shaders, the rest is cut off... well to be honest I haven't tried flashing the 6990m vbios yet, but I bet it won't magically unlock shaders.

I may try it when I come around, but at the moment I need a running system and don't have the time to revive a dead card.

The ES 6970m only came with 960 shaders as well, the rest was locked per VBIOS. Flashing the Dell VBIOS allows to unlock the additional shaders on the ES 6970m card. Considering that there were probably quite a lot improvements and changes since the first ES 6970m, I doubt that even a 1120 shader 6970m ES would work with the 6990m vbios.

Hmm Id also love to see a 6970 flashed with a 6990 vbios. I think it could be much like the Nvidia 280->285. I hope anyhow.

This could actually work, IMHO. It just doesn't seem like AMD would produce 2 types of cards when they had a chance of making a single one and adjusting the specs with vBIOS. I'm really curious to see someone try and flash the 6970M with a 6990M vBIOS.

Those who have their systems going back for replacement, can definitely give it a shot :)

Ok guys, I can try it. Though I haven't a Dell card... but it works with the Dell 6970m vbios as well, so... yeah, trial and error I guess.

But I want a VBIOS that got copied per ATIflash, I don't want to use a VBIOS that got dumped per GPU-Z, a while ago I had some issues with corrupted Nvidia VBIOS which got dumped with GPU-Z.

So I'd need the VBIOS, dumped with ATIflash booted from a DOS drive, and as well the VBIOS checksum and size to verify it doesn't got corrupted on the way (both can get read out with ATIflash). Murphy's usually omnipresent, so we should try to rule out any conflicts in advance.

maybe you can ask koelle to backup/save his 6990m vbios using atiflash DOS environment.

    @koelle
Can you make backup Vbios dumped using Atiflash in DOS environment.
Everyone is waiting for svl7 next unlocking attempt.. Cheers!!

I tried this with a 5870. Flashed it with a 5850 vbios. Didn't work but was able to flash back so no harm done. Good luck. Thanks again.

They added a little more cooper on the heatsink as far as i can see)

I have the 6970m ENG version and I'm using the 6990m vbios. I have 1280 shaders now! No just kidding. Shaders show as 1120 in GPU-z same as before. No change in anything apart from clocks.

Arent the 6990m's using 1120 shaders though????? - my 6970m cards are showing as 960 in gpu-z.....

You are using an engineering sample 6970m, right? was that defaulted at 1120 shaders or something 'cos afaik, all 6970m's should be 960 shaders, right?

Are you saying that by using the 6990m vbios, you have gone from 960 to 1120 or was your card always 1120 (being an engineering sample) ??

Gotcha.....will have to see how it goes when someone flashes their 6970m (that has 960 shaders) with the 6990m vbios......would be nice to get 1120 shaders.....maybe wishful thinking!

Ok, I just flashed the card with the VBIOS koelle provided, no luck. It's a bit weird, POST is ok, Windows boots (can hear the sound of the logon screen) but no picture, the screen just stays black.

Was able to blind flash the card back to normality. I didn't uninstall the driver before this, but this shouldn't be the problem, I've already changed the hardware IDs of the card several times, and everytime Windows just loads a generic driver, so it seems the VBIOS is simply not compatible with out GPU.

I read somewhere (cannot remember where unfortunately) that 160 of the pipelines of 6970m were "physically" blocked to help with heat. It was made to seem as if the blocking mechanism was mechanical vs software. I read this when reading about the difference presented by xtx architecture

On the 28th of July my m17x should arrive. Specs: i7 2820, 8gb 1333mhz, 2x320gb RAID 0, 6990m. Someone mentioned that it would be better to have some single gpu benchmarks. I will get the newest drivers for catalyst and the gpu and run some tests and post them if no more benchmarks have come out by then. I plan on running pcvantage, 3dmark11, 3dmarkvantage and hopefully cinebench11.5. Anyone suggest other tests to run? thanks

So did the OP ever overclock his 6990's and run some benches? If so, could someone please direct me to those results? I'm very interested to see how the cards OC.

If not I'll do that when I receive my M18x the day after tomorrow.

That is an overclocked bios i got from koelle and i modified to 800-1000 clocks however i don't recommend to flash that because it was dump with GPUZ and those bios sometimes get corrupted

the best way to overclock is using bios because is more stable but to find your happy overclock you can use software first and then you can mod your own bios and flash that way you don't have to use software anymore
