Cool, thanks, i'm moving away from alienware to a desktop and smaller notebook soon I think, but that new m18x is slick, even if they did cut some silly corners.

Well it makes it easier for people like me to be able to resist the upgrade, I mean if the new 17 looked like the old one, I'd be hard pressed into not going for an upgrade,
I mean aluminium (although if it were built like.a razor or an apple, single piece of machined alu.)

Really, that's cool. What's the battery life gaming on battery? I can't imagine it going more than about 20-30 minutes, maybe less, running both 780Ms under gaming load. But, that is nice that you can do it, because it was impossible with the M17x R2, M18x R1/R2.

Well I check it out, and what it do is when you disconnect the power cable it downclock to 475 MHz and only use one card. I love this baby!!!

Hey fox, soon I will need your help to do some over clock. I just don't have time right now!
I didn't play for to long on battery so can't tell how long it last. I will check today when I get home from work.

i wonder whether alienware 18 fits heckler design onelessoffice desk!
The Most Beautiful Desk $750 Can Buy | ZAGGblog

laptop width, no problem.. but laptop depth is a problem for this desk. its only 12inch deep. but m18 is about 13inch depth. any space left on the edge curves that doesnt touch the desk ? i could see about half inch on front and back curve. if anyone could measure the exact depth excluding the curves which doesnt touch the desk, it would be helpful.

You can hang it off the edge a little, the feet are inset in a fair bit so an inch should not matter too much.

Heh, I prefer the M17x r1 and r2, simply because of the 16:10 aspect ratio screen. If I'm not living in a nursing home, I must already be dead.

Actualy, after Googling the "old-gen" M18x, I have got to say, it looks so much better than the new M18. I realy like it! Whereas before I thought it was super ugly and that this new design looks much better. The aluminium chassis is also very nice.

Nailed it on the head, in my opinion. One of the first thoughts that went through my head when I laid eyes on my new 18 the first time.

I love the build of both. Both have their pros and cons. The loss of features is sad, since I use the features that are missing. In spite of the plastic aesthetic panels, the new 17 and 18 are built sturdier than the previous models. This is especially true for the 17.

The new 18 is also easier to work on than the M18x. Disassembly is very easy.

One of my huge bugbears with the last two that point, there is no reason a machine that size should be hard to work on.

I don't consider either one difficult to work on, but easier is always nice. I did a complete teardown on my M18x R2 today and transferred all of the guts to another chassis. It wasn't a big deal, but it takes longer with the M18x than the 18. (The M18x has a lot more screws and more challenging ribbon cable connections, WiFi antennas pass through chassis, etc. but it doesn't require more skill.) It's nice that the palmrest and keyboard are removed as an assembly with no keyboard surround bezel on the new 18. That is very convenient.

Hmm, putting the custom Avenger chassis away for now?

I don't think working on the M18x is difficult, just a bit time consuming to not rush and break something fragile. That said, easier teardowns are always welcome.

I have to say, the 18 look has grown on me. Today I compared the 18 with my old M18xR1 and I'm starting to prefer the 18.
I have come to appreciate the 18's keyboard, and you can understand with all of these extra lighting zones the last thing you want is even more lights blaring everywhere hence why I now think toning down the keyboard AlienFX brightness on the new 18 was a good idea. The removal of the keyboard trim and media keys makes the laptop seem a lot 'cleaner'. Definitely prefer it since the media buttons on the M18xR1 were annoying to press (for me) and felt a bit cheap.
The screen on the new 18 is so much better, I now think getting rid of the E2E plastic was a good idea - much less glare and the display seems more vibrant and crisp.

Having said that, the plasticky feeling of the silver trim on the base is just horrible. I really do miss that cold metal feeling that I got with the M18xR1.

Well I suppose it is about compromise in the end but I think the cleaner look will pay off in the long run.

    As a girl...

    I'm a bit offended...

I have an m17X R4 which is custom'd out and is overclocked heavily...

I certainly DO NOT like the new look at all.

As long as performance is not compromised... aesthetics are secondary. Compromises in performance and tweak-ability will be seen as unacceptable by many, if not the majority. Performance is what has made Alienware 17" and 18" laptops most attractive to true performance enthusiasts.

I agree I don't know why either computer is referred to as "girly" they're both beasts.

still ordered my m18x from dell and it's due to arrive this week and still xotic still haven't got theirs, funny how after my cancellation they all suddenly turned into back ordered stuff, should've been labeled like that since December considering. so that leaves me to do all the customisation myself, i reckon i can learn how it's just extra time and effort which means long nights of ordering and installing parts and checking it works etc. oh bother... and getting a skin wrap is going to be difficult, at least a complete one and not the case only or cut up sectioned ones you get from the few who supply for alienware. i'll figure out something.

in the meantime it sounds like yours is working woohoo! and long live the jukeboxes! :D

I've seen one of the new M17's over at a yonder store here in town. Just a custom computer shop and someone bought the newer M17 there. So, naturally, hearing about this, I grab my R2 and head down there. Man... Talk about appearance differences.

Specs and whatnot aside, I like the new looks. :D Kinda makes me wanna grab a newer machine. ^_^
