haha that sucks a lot! I had a few extreme hard drive data losses recent from some tinkering too on tight timings :) this is so fun though :)

So here is 35 hours passed error free in memtest86+ version 4.2 newest. The ram is set at 1.55v via bios and 2133 via bios... I even got XMP to work correctly at 2133 now.
Get this though I got them stable at 2133mhz on CL9-10-10-25 :) that's right eat your heart out Kingston :p

I see that especially 2266 at 1.5v would do it :) in fact I have to get a new license from Thaiphoon burner from it :| I emailed them they are going to take a new registration number since somehow my config changed from the HD errors... lol

Thanks a lot Zero989 :) It was days and nights of failures and successes... I worked my way down the ladder.

I pretty much read the entire thread and I am sure the developer of Thaiphoon Burner has had the most profitable 2 months ever lol.

It seems like there is a definite risk with flashing RAM such as data loss, correct? And if I flash the RAM and screw things up, but don't have any other modules, how would I reflash it to defaults?

Well if you don't have a spare only flash one at a time... Otherwise you CAN'T flash them back without a spare working ram module.

Best to have atleast two chips and test one confirm it's stable and flash it back to stock, test second module and then flash both the the new speed... That way on the way while testing you always have a normal chip to boot from. You can flash the SPD etc and make the chip not bootable and always if you have a spare plain chip can boot the system and within 2-4 seconds place the second chip in while it's starting. The second chip won't be fully utilized but once to Thaiphoon Burner it will show up when you go to read from the module. Flash your backup and your all fixed. Just like John posted :) I was shocked how well it worked... Seems that method will repair even the worst of flashes.

Yes the author must of gained a bit of capital just recently. In fact they got double from me when I accidentally purchased it from the wrong computer thinking I could install it on any 1 single computer lol... Not the case as the registration is unique to each computer. Don't change your computer config too much... You'll need a new license lol.

I think John may have like 3-5 licences between just a computer or two :)

Ah, I see. That makes sense. I think I will save this project for some time later on. I don't want to have to take out my SSD and put in the stock Alienware HD to avoid data loss as well as take out 1 stick to tamper with the frequencies. But it definitely does sound interesting to make the RAM perform beyond it's standards. Thanks for the clarification.

With downloadmoreram.com I can now run 18 instances of Photoshop instead of 17! I also feel more confident about my love life! Best of all, it's free! Thank you downloadmoreram.com!

nope. john has 2 bought licences for two computers, but....i have a total of 3 on the laptop and 2 on the desktop.
you only need to resend them your code and they send another licence. you just save them all to a text file and when it ask for that version...you cut and paste.

when taking out the battery or changing the amount of ram installed or some other things...the licence number changes for some reason.

Guys check this out 31.6gb bandwidth on Winsat MEM (windows assesment tool) on laptop ram :O
this isn't the bulk of my work or anything but here is my 2133mhz 8gb dual channe DDR3 So-dimm fully stable and usable in windows and on IGP for that matter so I know its really stable as the gpu uses the system ram exclusively for its VRAM

Been playing some Dirt3 and Diablo 3 on it

Thanks, unfortunately, still makes no sense, guess I'll buy ram and write off this 22 bucks. Confusing program....

I try to browse for xmp and nothing shows up.

Found 125 xmp profiles, just don't know which to use...

So, I tried a profile and got the following

While this may work, I'm pretty sure I just killed my m18x r2. I tried this after flashing some timings to my g.skill ram that didn't work. I had only flashed one stick, so I knew I could boot off the other. Tried these steps and the computer shut down when I put in the jacked up stick. From then on, the computer will not boot with any ram in it. Fans spin up, keyboard lights up, then shuts off and tries again in an endless boot loop. Without the ram, it gives beeps as it should. I've tried resetting the bios by unplugging the cmos battery and holding power button. No go. I am so very, very sad and sick over this.

    Gents,

Alienware finally fixed my m18x r2, at the fourth attempt. No need now to disconnect PSU to boot, and crossfire working (well as well as 7970Ms ever did) too.

However, I've noticed some stability issues in the couple of weeks I've had it back. Fearing it was my Corsair 1866MHz memory (memtest confirmed it), I went ahead and bought 16GB (2x8GB) 2133MHz CL11 Hyper X 'Impact' which arrived today.

With bios memory settings all at default, it failed to post.

Set to 2133MHz, failure to post.

Set to 2133MHz and 1.5v, failure to post.

Set to 1866MHz, default voltage, failure to post.

Only one Hyper X Impact module inserted, 1866MHz selected with default voltage - system works fine, but memory performace poor (winsat mem ~12GB/s)

Only one Hyper X Impact module inserted, 2133MHz selected with default voltage - failure to post. Even with 1.5v - failure to post.

Both Hyper X Impact modules inserted, 1600MHz selected, default voltage - system works fine, but memory performance (winsat mem ~22GB/s), and runs at a lazy CAS9.

(Was previously 25+GB/s with Corsair Vengence 1866MHz @ CAS9, and even when at 1600MHz Vengeance ran at CAS8)

XMP profiles are empty (checked with Thaiphoon burner).

So what gives? Any idea what manual timings I should set to get my monies worth?

Oh, and the 1866MHz Vengeance modules NEVER ran at 2133MHz for me, whatever I programmed into them.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

TBoneSan had the right idea. You can go further though; someone who's been deep into OC-land once told me you can use 1.65v as a rule. It does no harm to your RAM modules, ensures the best stability and will perform better for the same frequency at lower voltages. No promises here but you might just be able to get the most out of your money with 1.65.

    Hi, and thanks again.

However, 1.65v works on 1866MHz, but no joy yet with 2133MHz.

    Hyper X Impact 1866MHz @ CAS10 (1T) with 2x8GB= 25050MB/s vs Vengeance 1866MHz@CAS9 (2T) 4x4GB= 2540MB/s.

So getting somewhere, but I think manual timing settings are my only hope now.

I shan't be pleased not to see 2133MHz, from RAM sold as 2133MHz. I noted at CES Kingstong demoed 2400MHz sodimm, claiming 1.35v. Yeah pull the other one.

Can I have a screen shot of somebodys' m18x r2 bios timings at 2133MHz please?

My Kingston and Vengeance 2133 memory have always run at 2133 with the M18xR2 BIOS set to "Auto" for memory settings.

Info in these threads might help, and the first thread linked below includes some screen shots of manual settings:

http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-18-m18x/730115-let-s-talk-ram.html (see post #4 for some helpful info and posts #41 and #65)

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-18-m18x/724697-kingston-16gb-2133mhz-memory-timing.html

Here are the "automatic" timings for my Vengeance 2133 (nothing is manually set in the BIOS). This is DDR3L memory. The timings may not work for your Kingston RAM, but it won't hurt to try them as manual BIOS settings if the screen shot in post #41 above does not work for you.

    EDIT:

Okay with the HyperX Black 2133 - tried the settings in Post #41 and yours in #65. No dice sorry. Silence from the PC only.

I noted on your second link, someone booted in CAS13. I wish I could get the details of his timings though.

I had one of my Vengeance 1866 sticks boot momentarily @ 2133, but BSOD soon followed during Windows Login.

    What fun...

    End EDIT.

Mr. Fox, you really are a credit to the community. I'll try these settings later, or something near it. As I said, I could not get 2133MHz ever, whatever settings I used to so manual (as it was the Vengance I have) seems to be the only way.

Hi guys, can't understand what memory Corsair Vengeance CMSX8GX3M1A1866C10, only works on the 800. Alienware m18x r1, A05, 2920xm

created in Thaiphoon Burner two profiles, but don't know how to switch, select xmp in the bios and the system does not start, create a profile manually - still worth 800

I have never had success using XMP profiles in the M18xR1 or the M18xR2 using HyperX or Vengeance RAM. It's unlikely you will have any luck with that approach. You can manually set memory timings if you need to.

However, that particular Vengeance memory (CMSX8GX3M2A1866C10) has known bugs. The Thaiphoon Burner web site has support videos embedded from YouTube on how to fix it. Maybe these will help. After you fix the bugs with Thaiphoon Burner, review this thread for manual timing suggestions: http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-18-m18x/730115-let-s-talk-ram.html#post9348610

I did like in this video, fix cas cl8 and cl7, and added profiles in 1866 and 2133. Not only could edit the manufacturer of the chips, I have written under the label
    corsair
    512m8DDJG
    NAC0301421
    E6488420 3

not able to identify the manufacturer of the chips

man thank you! raised to 930, made as in the first video, added cl7 cas,8,11,12,13,14 and in the BIOS chose 1866, restarted and got 930

Sorted your issues and an OC on top, nice. Can you get down to 11?

When installing 1866 restart is fine, if you put 2133 then when you restart - power supply off and then on again. On 2133 sometimes works unstable, 1.55-1.65 doesn't help

freddynew, hi! Is there any chance to take a photo of DRAM chips? Because it's hard to identify them by the Part Number you have provided.

freddynew, thanks buddy! I can't identify them right now, but I hope I will find something on these chips.
