Are you using a r1 or r2 ? How many beeps are getting ?
If you are using an r1 what bios are you on? The fella in this thread found the solution to be an upgrade on the r1 Bios - not certain but its worth a look and read
-
They should be fine. I removed my old support plates and no problem. IGP was already disabled when I booted up with the dual 880m's. Probably the Vbios or faulty cards...
-

I've removed plenty of those things in my time. Just requires patience.
-
It makes one beep as soon as I start the computer...black screen, on both single and multi GPU setup. The computer is still on and nothing happens.
I have an R2 with a modifed A10 bios. -
No, it dont work clearing CMOS....still one beep when I try and startup and black screen.
This was buger, 2300 dollars down the drain -
Did you try to boot on IGP? It should work at least
Edit: I don't have this computer but I had a computer with a defective GC -
There is nothing on the screen. The screen is on but its all black.
-
Okey, now i get 5 beeps.... CMOS battery
-
and suddenly 1 beep again.
-
then I reset the CMOS and then the computer starts and shuts down right away (no beeps) I start up again and it gives me a black screen and 5 beebs. I restart the computer and then it gives me 1 beep again.
Tried with two other CMOS batteries and the same problem. -

If you remove the gpu? Does it start?
-
then its just dead...
-
No its not dead. Patience, my rig did the same thing with a simple repaste job. All you have to do is keep running down the line with everything. Check for any possible shorts, check to make sure everything is plugged in, swap gpu's the whole 9 yards. and make sure to follow the cmos dump to the T. if you don't it won't actually work. Don't give up hope so quickly.
-
Are you on a r2?
-
He's on the R2 with A10 unlocked BIOS.
-
Chances are it might be able to be salvaged
-
left GPU slot is master right?
-
Yes, it's considered master.
-
Okey, upgrademonkey told me to only install a GPU in the master first and then startup and install the modified driver and then install the second GPU.
-
And how did that work out for you?
-
Haven't tried that yet, will try after work today.
-
tried with one card, same problem... first 5 beep and the 1 beep.
tried with no cards installed but the same, first 5 beep and then 1 beep.
tried switching card but the same, first 5 beep and then 1 beep.
tried to clear CMOS but nothing, same problem...first 5 beep and then 1 beep.
I guess I destroyd the computer and cards in this upgrade process so gonna start looking for a new laptop, this time a AW18 with 880's.
-
What exactly did you do when installing the cards? Did you perform a proper power drain each time before disassembling anything? How did you remove the backplates of the 880m? ESD?
-
I know you said you have done everything but seriously, recall my previous post? Stop giving up!
Solution
To fix the issue and have your system working again, please perform the following steps:
Remove the system battery.
Remove the Ac/adapter.
Hold the power button for 30 seconds without any power source.
Plug back the Ac/adapter only.
Hold the “FN” key and without releasing the key, Power "ON" the computer.
After step 5, you will notice the system will try to turn "ON" and after 5 seconds will restart, at this point you can release the “FN” key.
The computer will POST and starts loading Windows.
Shutdown your computer and plug back the system Battery.
Download the latest BIOS version for your Alienware System and run it.

So guess what its the M18x's bios which I had to do with my R2. Follow it, get it fixed and stop giving up so easily.... everything can be fixed. -

Problem
Some laptops after turning "ON" makes 5 Beeps and also did not POST.
Note: POST refers to POWER ON SELF-TEST and is a set of routines that verifies the functionality of each internal component on the computer. If a computer is not posting, one of the issue it may experience is a no video, beeps, computer freezes at the BIOS screen, or any other behavior that didn't allow the computer to start loading the Operating System.
Discussion
Several things can affect a system for not to complete a POST. In this case, static electricity or BIOS outdated can cause this behavior.

I have tried that one several times, the 5 beeps keeps comming back again.
I didnt perform a power drain of the system before I removed the cards. -
works now without card... -
Now comes the tricky part...you will need to boot so graphics. After it reboots do a complete shut down and power drain. Add one card in master slot. Then boot to bios and see if you can see the card.

Power Drain:
- Remove system battery
- Disconnect AC adapter
- Hold power button down 30 seconds
- Connect AC adapter
- Load Windows
- Install system battery
Do I need to do the last two steps? -
Are you in sg mode?

, after I set the time and exit bios, the 1beep is back......
-
-
Its a mode that allows you to see onboard graphics and dedicated graphics at the same time.
But it looks like you have one card working at least.

Take that with a pinch of salt. Try updating GPU-z. -
bad news, started up with both cards installed and the SLI cable installed and smoke came from both cards.
-
Just below the screw, you can see the brown/black area.
Now I cant see the cards in BIOS either.
was fun as long as it lasted, gonna order a new AW18 tomorrow and throw this piece of to the garbage. -
should i have switched back from SG after i installed the second GPU?
-
Here you can see the damaged component. -
Oh man, I am really very sorry to see this.
Please don't throw it away. If you don't want it, send me a PM. -
Dont throw it away. I will nuy it from you.

Thats not because of the laptop, that is what you call a shot card that your seller needs to RMA for you or give you your money back. There is nothing that could even touch that to cause those to blow. Simply put you have a good working cpu, shot cards, possibly a damaged mobo. At this point tell your seller whats going on show these pictures to him and link him to this thread if need be. This is the cards fault not your computers fault. Sorry for the bad luck with these cards. I know how much its sucks. See if you can get the computer to work on integrated graphics to verify its still ok and if its not then the tell the seller about it as well. Your R2 was perfectly working prior to these cards right?
Added note, if you are truly thinking about getting rid of it, I know I could use the CPU.
Just got my 880M twins!
