nice pics, thanks. looks great imo. dont really care about the red/black. contrast of colors is better with black anyway  .

I was surprised at the black. I was expecting it to look the same as the m17x R2. it's got a more metallic look to it though which I like even better.

Over all I got to say it looks better the the R2. From the softtouch on the wrist area to the shiny look around the keyboard. The new buttons are definitely better the the capacitive ones on the R2 as well.

Currently running an Acronis backup of the factory install. One that is done I will play with it some and install the 2nd drive and the memory. Need to break for lunch anyway, blood sugar is dropping.

I agree gun metal would be the best color..

but the r2 looks tiny in comparison to the m18x, what scares me a bit.

    Huge Picture Update Incoming!!!

Well I setup my tripod and remote release and took some more pictures. This time providing thumbnails and higher res pics. I had my 5 and 6 year old nieces over so you are likely to see some smudging or finger prints as they "liked how it feels and the little alien guys eyes glowing". I guess proof even metal and rubber are not immune to kids fingerprints.

I took some of the screen as well close up but without an actual macro lens that is the best I could do. However this only gives you an idea and really isn't that useful IMHO because even of course this all determines on what you are viewing the source with and unless both our monitors were calibrated to the exact same color and settings it's not really a good comparison but I did it anyway since some people were asking.

I get My M18x TOMORROW! Is there any interest in me doing a 1080p Unboxing video of the Black Beauty? What do you guys want to see? My first bench is not going to be PCMark, not my thing, My first thing is to install my 512GB M4 and get this Puppy LOADED WITH GAMES!

What would you like to see? I also have a Nikon D90 so I could take some sexy screens with my 1.4FStop Lens and get some sexy shots of the system.

Do you guys think its possible they will introduce a silver version aswell with the m18x r2? The black version is kind of dissapointing by the look of the pictures, and red is totaly not my taste (and yet everybody seems to get the red version lately lol).

edit: @ trujoker, where did you get that awesome wallpaper?

If you could do some benchmarks of latest games?I would love to see them running on this beast.

That is a nice camera , If you could click pictures in different angles (of the screen) close ups of multimedia keys and all.

But first enjoy your laptop :)

Any of the above...we're definately lacking HQ pics of a black M18x. So far the pics of the black one make it look more metallic then the old M17x black, which I like actually. + repped JT for some early black pics.

It is not my camera, it is somewhat of a charcoal-like black. Up close I could see someone thinking there is a touch of brown in there, but there's not really. Far away though, it looks entirely black.

Will do this in a bit, I have a few things that can't be interrupted loading right now.

Also, for anyone wondering, I'm getting a WEI rating of 5.9 because of the HDD config I chose. I am HOPING to bench in 3DMark tonight on both stock RAM and the new HyperX RAM that I mentioned I have.

I will definitely take some nice long exposures of the Black in a natural lighting so it does not destroy the look of the PC.

As I said before I am not a PC Vantage guy. The first thing I will do when the SSD is ready to go is load this guy up with everything I can possibly throw at it.

    I figured:
    Crysis Original
    Crysis Warhead
Crysis 2 (although seems like a bad benchmark at the moment with it only being DX9)
Bad Company 2 (although we know it is going to eat it alive)
    Metro 2033

Also I'll run the gaming Benches:
    Stalker COP
    Unigine Heaven
    RE5
    Lost Planet 2
    Devil May Cry 4
    Hawx 2

And of course Doom II.....to test the pixels. :p

Id also like to see some Metro 2033 results....in game bench or anything else to show how well these systems handle it....DOF enabled/disabled.....or just plain maxed out....its one beast of a game to use to test...at least I found it to be!

Has anyone posted up any 2920xm figures yet....anywhere!.......

So I calibrated my display last night (looks much nicer calibrated) and with the IGP running and half brightness + bluetooth, wireless and alienfx active, the system reported 3:50 mins of battery. While using the IGP, the fans are completely off and the system is not generating ANY noise. This should be great news for those that want to study in the library or some place quiet for an extended period on battery.

Here's a picture of me playing Borderlands last night with a friend online. I had to use exposure compensation so the actual panel looks better in person. This is after calibrating the display:

Sharing my profile won't help you guys one bit. The calibration is tailored for your unique display and lighting conditions. What I see on my screen may be completely different than what you see if you load my profile on yours.

I use to think this as well but it actually does give a good starting point for users. I have an Epson 8500 that was not professionaly calibrated but after getting a user in avforums to share their settings mine ended up being without 10% of his and without paying $300 dollars for the calibration.

Don't see a harm in you posting what you've done even if it doesn't help some what does it hurt to post?

If it is gun metal, then I'm definitely getting it over the red. The black on the R2 seems a little too black, but the pictures give the M18x a bit of a metallic gray look which looks awesome. That would be the best of both worlds between getting black or silver. If a silver option was still offered though, I'd have no problem choosing that.

I just got mines this afternoon and after a few hours with it I'm a bit dissapointed. You would think that a premium $3000+ system can run every game @ maximum settings but...it can't. I've tested my system with Shogun 2 Total War and Dragon Age 2 @ maximum settings and have noticed the low frame rates--playable, but frustrating. I am not bashing Alienware completely, I'm just dissapointed at the limit of mobile gaming. Current games are "playable" now, but will we have to resort to medium and low settings by 2012??

Are you using the 460m's or the 6970's? Also are you sure your drivers aren't just causing some issues? I would think that this machine could handle those games no problem with such high-end components.

I have the 2820QM and [2] 6970 CF. I hope the "stock" drivers the laptop are causing some issues. And I also thought that this machine could handle those games no problem with such high-end components...until I loaded up the games and notice the dissappointing low frame rates.

Pix of it next to my 18.4" HP HDX18

Upgrade to new drivers (11.5a R3) and latest CAP - 11.5CAP2 and you will see much better results.

Just redid the benchmark for Shogun 2 using 11.5a drivers. Frame rate dropped from 27 to 25.
