WTH, My M17x R1 runs this game just fine with 2X 3890s..... Either something whacked, or very bad drivers...

 

The R1 had GTX 260m, GTX 280m, and 4870m.....wth you talking about?!

I didn't play for very long, but I wasn't noticing any fps issues with DA2. With High Res textures installed running DX11.

 

Maynard's Beast Has Landed!

First off, I'm going to be uploading the pictures tomorrow morning or late late tonight. I can CONFIRM that the Black is a Gunmetal Black very similar to the PS3 MSG4 edition (Not as grey, but very very close). I was so bummed out about getting the Black until I looked at it in person today. Absolutely stunning and very unique looking.

Initial Impressions:

Display 8.5 / 10.0
As I type this I'm installing Windows to my Crucial 512 M4 and typing on 3 - U2311's IPS displays. I can say that the one thing that bothers me a TAD is the viewing angles when compared to IPS. As stated I stated before my benchmark for a laptop display is the Macbook Pro 2010 and compared to that it's a 8.0. The display isn't terrible by any means, it's a nice LED monitor display, but is not going to blow you away. If Dell did release a RGB in the next few months I would cause quite a stink for the new one, but this is a nice display regardless and nice and bright.

WHY ARE YOU SO BIG?!?! kidding...
I'm coming from a Macbook Pro and a Sager W870CU. Compared to those two models this is a sturdy, solid, well built laptop. I only dinged it 0.5 for the cooling inside of the system. While it does look good I just feel like Sager's cooling is top notch and hard to be beaten. When you open a Sager it is full of Copper and this is full of plastic. Don't get me wrong, it is built outstanding and the engineering to fit everything in here and make it easy to get parts in and out is fantastic, but it isn't going to beat Sager's cooling. (We all knew that right? Plus Sagers are ugly.)

Sound 8.5 / 10
Man I dont know what some are talking about when it comes to sound!? My Macbook is MEH at best and the Sager? God AWFUL! This beast sounds gorgeous compared to the two other laptops and when you realize "I'm listening to this on a laptop" you can't help but be amazed. No "hollowness" or "Tinny" noises for me at all.

Overall I am in love. Well worth the wait and just finished installing Windows and now I'm restoring the Alienware look to the desktop

Sorry for the late reply to the requests for the calibration profile, as you all know I am still working through gathering data for GPU 2 temps. Anyway, the calibrated profile is attached to this message.

NOTE: This profile is meant for my display and lighting conditions. I make no guarantees it will even look good on your systems. Second, you still need to run the Spyder 3 elite software (or some 3rd party LUT loading software) to load the profile into memory when running games and other applications.

To those already heavily gaming with it - how is the noise level compared to the M17X-R2 under full load???
Is it louder, quieter, the same??

 

because its a laptop it will still be loud but apparently its quieter than the m17x r1/r2

Thanks - that is good news. Well than all I have to do is wait for GTX485 SLI or GTX580 SLI and buy one.

Your opinion on the SSD - is it really worth the price - I have one on my M17X-R2 but am no longer sure it really is worth the money especially when its all only about gaming.

Simply put, there is almost no reason to not have to not use at least a 64gb ssd boot drive now in days since even the c300 goes on sale for $100. If space is a concern then obviously two 750gb mechanical would be superior. But what I did was save $30 and went with my desktop Samsung f4 2tb in a external enclosure for all my media and games while using an M4 128gb and Scorpio Black 750gb in my 18x. If you have to travel a lot and can't use an external drive with a larger than 750gb library of games, then I could see you needing to go double mechanical drives.

 

So what config did you order your M18X initially and is it hard to replace the initial HD with the SSD and the WD Scorpio??

 

I was surprised to see they used a WD Scorpio black drive as the 320gb basic option.

 

Good for them if they did! I am not a big seagate fan....

 

hurry up and get your laptop. i wanna see 8K+ in 3dmark 11. make. it. happen. i believe you can hit 4ghz on all four cores for at least one run with lvl 3 OC + 106mhz bclk. *cross fingers*

I love the color of the black. It definitely makes up for not having the silver option anymore. With that close-up, I can see that the grip part has some texture to it which is nice to see, I was under the impression that is was just plain.

 

Looks nice. Mine has been on a truck for 6 hours but is not yet here

 

Can you guys check your GPU 2 temps once you receive your systems?

 

Yep - reaffirmed black for me.

580's yet to come but that will be nail #2 in the deal.

rgbled screen I think they're gonna get dinged for in the reviews as "ok" but not the "stunning" you'd expect at this level, but good is better than bad We'll see if they update that, which I suspect they really have to. Bear in mind that more widely spaced pixels usually lowers contrast a bit too, but not always.

Love the pics, of both colors. Each is just a testament to good looks. VERY nice pics folks, very nice indeed.

Mine just got here, the black is beyond awesome looking. I like this black MUCH more than the one that was used on the R2. I am very excited about this laptop now

Congrats on your "new arrival" .... furmark temps would be a nice starter for both gpu's on stock drivers. - see if your secondary is running 10c hotter than the primary like Joker's.......

And yeah, that black looks more like a gunmetal grey than black....from the pics ive seen it looks really nice....

 

Got mine today. Perfect fit in my Slappa Hardbody 17" case.

 

This laptop is a 10/10 on aesthetics and looks in my opinion. The texture around the keyboard is brushed metal and the rest of the inside (including the border on the screen around the E2E plastic) is soft touch. The hinge is extremely smooth. It is awesome....I can not wait until tonight when I can actually use it!

The red's finish is very pleasing, you won't be disappointed.

 

It's one of those rare conditions where both colors are awe inspiring. Nice!

 

Can anyone take a few high res pics of the black? It seems to be a gun metal gray, and this color option appeals to myself greatly, along with others I believe. It currently seems to be very clearly grayish, but the m17x r3 black looks grayish from certain angles.

Yeah I zoomed in really close because some people wanted to see the screen up close. Sitting normal with laptop in front of me say 2 feet I see nothing no pixels at all. If I get 6 to 8 inches to screen then I can start to see them but seriously who sits 6 inches from their laptop screen

 

I have to be honest the Red makes for one helluva seksi laptop and the black is just gunmetal ho hum grey. It does nothing for me. Just my 2 cents.
