Wow did you not get any discount at all or?

I should be getting my m18x tomorrow as it was shipped today, with NBD.
The First ETA was nov. 29 so a whole 7 days before that. And the order was on 11/13/11

ugh, i can't believe i had to wait for 12 hours delivery :( oh well. fedex did a bad job promising this time  if i knew that would happen i could've just went there and picked it up myself :D don't send a kid doing a man's job as they say :)

i ordered nebula red, but i have seen that the black version is different from other alienware m17 series, something like metallic gun black i think. idk if the m18x black version is a finger smudge magnet though.

@PowaH - for more detail surrounding issues with the 6990M CrossFire, please have a look at this thread. I'm sure we will see the AMD GPU back in full force once they have found and fixed the cause of malfunction.

As far as the specs go, this will depend on what you personally want in an Alienware and how much you can afford. If you want the most powerful and well built, the M18x is the best option. It has an anodized alloy chassis and its build quality and performance are unmatched. It also has dual GPU options not available in the M17x R3.

If satisfactory gaming performance with lighter weight and a slightly smaller form factor are more important to you than having the most powerful system with an anodized chassis, the M17x R3 is an outstanding machine that will save you a little money. The M17x R3 cannot be upgraded to dual GPU later on, so bear that in mind.

Also, welcome to NBR forum. I am glad you joined our Community and look forward to seeing/hearing more from you.

PowaH, I had not noticed, but good observation on your part. The AMD cards are not currently offered as a configuration option on the Dell US sales web site. I have not checked other countries. This is a change in the last 24 to 48 hours. The last time I checked, ordering 6990M CrossFire would cause a delay due to the engineering hold, but now it's simply not available. I'm sure this is temporary and hope so for AMD fans.

My laptop I ordered on the 17th has the AMD card in it but it's already been built (I think). I'm getting a different answer everytime I talk to someone. Will my video card be faulty? This thermal shutdown problem is what they couldn't fix in my current laptop. And yes it has the AMD cards too

Well, let's hope that is not the case. This is what I was getting at in earlier posts about having a delay for additional (non-standard) testing. There are a lot of M18x systems in circulation that function properly with 6990M CrossFire. I don't know the numbers, but most likely the majority sold thus far work correctly. Some information is distributed on a "need to know basis" at any company and what you are being told is probably as honest an answer as you can get based on the knowledge of the folks you are speaking with. Holding back the distribution of technical information helps a company avoid the spread of damaging lies and rumors until a simple explanation can be offered that everyone will understand. Perhaps this explains why you are getting a variety of answers.

If your system was fully tested and found to not exhibit any symptoms of the overheating and thermal shutdown, then you should be in good shape. Please keep us posted on any changes with your situation. I'm sure that I am not the only person interested in hearing from you, Jamie. :)

Well it is set to ship out tomorrow so it hasn't been through additional testing. But if it doesn't work on arrival, again, it will be returned.

I am in the US, that makes sense because Ive seen different categories and couldn't figure out they the difference.

I see you ordered the GTX graphics card so yours should be moving along and also a more expensive processor which isn't as common. So it would make sense for yours to be quick.

I have a M18x in production that I will probably be looking to sell. Long story but I had a lemon M17x that went in for service numerous times over a very long period, to make me whole, Dell/Alienware basically credited me the value of my M17x purchase to build a new machine (good end result but it took a while to get there). Below is the specs. Problem is, my M17x was already too big for my liking. I travel quite a bit and don't think a LT even larger will work for me. I would like to build a tricked out 15" machine. THe 14x seemed too small. I had to move quickly so I built the below.

What do you think a fair price would be for a unopended box?

Well i don't know what is happening to my m18x order is now showing

16-Nov-2011 Manufacturing build completed ETA 30-Nov-2011

But when i order a m14x she checked my m18x order and said it had left the factory.
I think the order status page is not working

Maybe by left the factory it means assembled and ready to be tested and boxed? Which I heard takes about 3 days then shipped out?

Kinda sounds like a request for an expedited order. Seeing if they can escalate your order? Every time I talk to someone they say they were able to expedite my order. I'm like yeah i'm sure you did, just like the other three people that gave me that line of bull

Can only hope. I really don't understand why the process of making an alienware laptop is so long. Place the parts in the laptop cover it up. They don't actually test if the parts work because almost everyone gets a defective laptop straight out of the gate. I'm thinking they should start shipping us the frame, parts, and discs and we take a few hours to do it ourselves.

I hope they don't see I just ordered a m14x and wait until they finish building that before they sent the m18x.

    Update: m14x build complete lol

:( Ordered m14x a week later and it's has shipped from the factory tonight and I think the m18x is still sitting in the factory. There must be either a hold on replacements or more testing on the m18x ???

This is what I have been saying. There is a temporary engineering hold on the distribution of AMD 6990M because of technical problems. The Level 1 Tech Support reps and front-line Customer Service and Sales reps may not even be aware of this, and there are certain pieces of information that they simply do not share. I think that hearing about the engineering hold straight from the mouth of the Alienware Lead Engineer in charge of the GPU design during our conference call can be deemed a reliable source. If I understood correctly, he is the one that ordered the engineering hold.

I can only imagine that the last thing that Alienware wants to do is create more disgruntled M18x customers by sending out systems with issues. We haven't received an update on the fix for the overheating, fan malfunction and thermal shutdown problem with the AMD 6990M CrossFire. This past week being a major holiday week in the USA, it's not surprising there were not any breakthroughs. Maybe this coming week will be different. Once they do have a fix in production, there is probably going to be a backlog of new system, system exchange and replacement part orders that need to be fulfilled.

Well, there is no engineering hold on the 580M. We have people posting about orders with both GPUs. I don't like to speculate that much, but it could be an actual shortage on them because of a spike in demand caused by the engineering hold on the 6990M. I believe there are many AMD customers that are trying to get switched over to the NVIDIA 580M all at once. A number of folks have posted about canceling the order with AMD cards and re-ordering with 580M. It's probably safe to say that some have followed suit without posting about it.

rep emailed me stating build complete.. But online there status hasn't changed to shipped but eta of 30/11/11 haven't had a working laptop for nearly 1 month now. It makes sense for ATI systems unless mine got caught up with them.
