I will still keep my order. I think were pressing the panic button just a little to fast. As far as I seen there is only one review and it didn't say the screen is bad. Lets wait until some of us have received ours. That being said if the screen is bad I will not hesitate to send back.
-
I'm hoping it's the same panel used in the w90vp. I loved that screen. ASUS W90Vp: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870... with CrossFire - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News
Not as good as an RGB, but defiinitely the best LCD I've used. -
its def not that one. the contrast ratio is 400:1 not 750:1 like that one. theres no doubt that its not the greatest screen they could have gotten...
-
Certainly. There is no doubt that this screen ( no RGB-LED, no IPS, not enough resolution to cover the 18.4 with small enough pixels... [On that larger screen the same amount of pixels -even less than in the M17R2- are bigger to be spread along a longer row so the dimensions of the pixel grow and the amount of pixels per inch decreases.] etc. etc. etc.) for me ( and as far as I have been told today for my scholar colleagues too) this time will keep us and many others from selecting AW as our next investment.
+
We are eagerly waiting for the forthcoming M6600 with some hope... -
On the US Dell website you can configure the M6600 and order it. It doesn't have the RGB screen options yet though. I'm trying to figure out when they will add them.
-
The M6600 has mediocre sound system and no manual switching from AMD GFX to IGP. The battery life will be pathetic unless Nvidia quadro is selected, but Optimus still sux, imho...
It's either a monster M18x with a huge, glossy and mediocre screen or M6600 with poor battery life and sound
-
I'm holding out hope that the screen isn't dreadful.
I'd hate to contemplate returning this thing!
-
Isn't dreadful is unacceptable for the flagship model.
-
I honestly can't see them equipping a dud screen to this laptop, it doesn't make any sense at all since people will just return them.
Has any one been in contact with the reviewers from Hardware Heaven about their specific thoughts on the screen they reviewed? They're the only ones who've seen it thus far. -
M17XR1 was their flagship 2 years ago and had a below mediocre panel.
-
There seem to be plenty of people here with R1's in their sigs... it can't be that bad can it?
-
i dont think it will be. i have the 1200 RGB screen since i have an r2, but people think that the screen will look like absolute crap as if its like a 16bit Link in the first Zelda. haha
-
Couldn't agree more. That's the only thing aside from the unit just being flat out faulty that would make me want to return it.
-
I have a crazy idea. If I ever decide to get a M18x might do a complete lid mod, remove the screen, cut out the E2E glass, insert a 17 inch ips panel(this will require somework).
-
if you were to buy a m17xR3 and also wanted to buy a 1200p RBG screen from dell would that work? i heard they have installation options for post-purchase upgrades.
-
No, different measurements(16:9 vs 16:10) and RGBLED screens use different connectors.
-
Just noticed the funny thing - the screen is anti glare, hehe. You just need to cut out the glass cover.
-
Why the heck would they put an anti-glare screen on a gaming laptop!? That really does have me concerned now... Any chance that documentation is wrong?
-
Look at that gray screen..that's all you need to know about the contrast ratio..sigh.

I don't think they will. It would be very weird lol.
And by the way, R1 display is one of the worst displays money can buy. It's kinda on the same level with $400-ish laptops. Better than netbook display tho lol -
@5150Joker - You can see the angle that screen is on tho... camera angle is not square on.
-
Oh, don't worry, you'll get the most reflective surface you have ever seen. The Edge to Edge glass makes it glossy as hell. Wish there was a proper matte option.
-
Solved by never leaving your house, putting blankets over the windows, and never turning on a light.
-
Well I prefer the TrueLife screens, pretty sure that's what's on my M1730 anyway. I don't mind the gloss because I believe it helps the contrast.
Dell even state on their screen comparison that the anti-glare screens are better for office use... M18X is a gaming laptop?!
So confused... hope someone gets theirs next week and puts this argument to rest. -
That screen honestly strained the hell out of my eyes after 2+ hours of gaming. Dried them out too
-
Sad... very sad... and the explanations are just excuses...
+
If Dellienware are listening: please bring back the RGB-Led or an IPS with more resolutions: they are plentof people ready to pay for it (including me).Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015 -
Except Dell doesn't make the panels. They could certainly negotiate something with the panel manufacturers however.
-
I've been itching about ordering one the last couple of days, and have been looking for an excuse not to.
Hopefully this can keep me at bay for now. -
The camera angle on that boot up vid is not doing anyone any favours... It's always going to look crap.
Try this one -

If I had an R2, I would have no second thoughts about keeping it over the M18x (for now at least). Even though I don't have a great computer right now, I think I'll wait until the R2 comes out with (hopefully) a better screen.
-
I like glossy panels. Buy curtains, problem solved. Gain increased contrast lose antiglare fuzziness.
But of course people are night and day on glossy vs matte. So I accept that others will want matte. Most makers, sooner or later, will offer both. It's the only real way out of the issue that meets both needs. -
I like glossy as well, but there's nothing good about a dull glossy screen
-
Anyone know the contrast on the M15x 1080P display? Just wondering in order to compare.
I know the 900P is 600:1 -
Some people can't justify 2 or more uber-munchkin systems. I need a solid machine for business and also for entertainment and would very much like to get one lappy to satisfy both needs. And BTW, modern matte panels (the high quality ones) do not have any fuzziness anymore. I had a HP8740w with anti-glare IPS, the best screen in notebooks up to date hands down, - perfect contrast (800:1), no graininess whatsoever. My wife's W510 has a 95% gamut matte screen - crystal clear, I can't find any excuses to complain, supreme TN panel.
Dell knows well that matte is back, they just didn't find it very reasonable to redesign the lid at this time
-
if you were to hook one of these up to your m18x, would you still be able to change the screen rez to 1920x1200 even if the 18x doesnt have it...? im kind of confused on how hooking up a monitor to a lappy would work.
hope my question made sense.
basically would it auto adjust to the monitors screen rez, or strech the 1080p out? -
as i can see from this forum, aw already lost few orders.
why dont they just add better screen as an option?
i dont get it. becuase of m17x?
m17x and m18x are just different.
m18x is more money and heavier and bigger. -
The external can be configured pretty much any way you want it.
-
Dell would have had to make a call on a supplier some time ago. One can only speculate on why they couldn't or didn't offer anything better (going purely by the publicised stats of the supplied screen at any rate).
I'm now holding off ordering until we get some more reviews. When are the first ones due for delivery? -
just bought mine today, and mines not coming in until the 25th. unfortunately, ill be in germany until the 29th, so no review until then
-
I have a U2711 and I can tell you that some versions of matte and even superb IPS screens can be a nasty combination. Taken as a whole I like the screen, but I've had strangers walk up and say "eww did you break that screen it looks all fuzzy?". I've obviously seen the Mac glossy version of the same screen and it is night and day better, lower gamut and all.
Anyway this is just one screen and I have a matte M6400 that is perfectly "ok", not great, but ok (ccfl screen). So they aren't all bad. But if I'm put in a "you can only have one, which would you prefer" in a blind buy it unseen test, I'll take the glossy every single time without a doubt.
But for work, the matte is a bit more useful. You are dead on right about that. -
Remember there aren't a ton of 18.4" screens out there. The larger size was driven by the larger graphic/cooling/power level this machine design dictated.
So depending on how "custom" they get with a given manufacturer to build a personalized screen model, they have limits in the wholesale marketplace of what kinds of screens they are able too choose. For example zero IPS screens in 18.4" size. -
This is the screen we need, guys! It was 1200p but nowadays it comes in 1080p, so it should fit the M18x. Also, it's 90% gamut!
Hopefully, someone at Dell pays attention to this link... -
thats cool.
do u think i can special order this and install this screen when they r making m18x?
or if thats not an option, do u think i can buy this screen and give it to like best buy or places that fix computer and replace it? -
you're a reseller man, why dont you get a bunch of pre-orders, buy a pallet of these screens and hook us up?
edit: I've finally gotten used to this crappy screen on my inspiron 1545 again. it was literally difficult to look at this screen after enjoying the 95% screen on the sager. I'm sure the m18 screen can't be any worse than this screen, so I for one am not too concerned about it -
All of which will be totally irrelevant if a decent chunk of users send the thing back because the one they did choose is rubbish... which is why, even tho I'm now on the fence myself, I can't believe they'll have picked a dud.
-
This would definitely void the warranty.
First, let's see if the screen is available for ordering and what's the price. -
If you can get this...count me as an order
-
Been following this discussion from the start and I admit that I can't tell a nice screen from a crappy screen, but I would love to just get a 1920 x 1200 screen rather than 1920 x 1080.
-
Let's see how the screen is in person before we make plans to replace it. Yes the contrast ratio isn't what we all wanted but perhaps some calibration will help alleviate that. I'll be using a spyder 3 on mine.
