So when can we expect these 2 GPU's and what is the main difference between the 8970 and 8990? :hi2:

King of Interns Simply a laptop enthusiast
Earliest June. Seems to be speculation that the 8970M might be a rebranded OCed/tweaked 7970M while the 8990M will be new.
Don;t think anyone knows for sure though. -
if there even IS a 8990M? based on eurocom´s/upgradeyourlaptop´s emails it rather sounded like the 8970M will be the only highend card in that gen...

They've learned from the past. No one adopted their 6950m nor their 7950m so they're not bothering with it any more.
An 8970m that can compete with the 780m for the 770m's price is more than enough for the high end market.
I just hope they fix their stuttering issues. Look at those spikes:

I'm holding off buying a M18x until they announce the new AMD GPU's. -
It says 7.5% improvement over 680m, that would suck if it were the case
-
better read the whole thread before starting to jump to conclusions here
nothing has been released yet as hard facts & numbers concerning the nextgen gpus.

After reading the Dell going private thread. I think the bigger question is are they getting out of the PC hardware business and will they refresh the AW laptops?
-
If the 8970m is only 7.5% faster than the gtx 680m then thats terrible. Hopefully Nvidia won't be lazy and just push out a piece of crap to match up to the 8970m. Probably going to be pointless to upgrade my 680m sli.
-
-
I don't see how a 8970m is only going to be 7.5% faster than a 680m. Overclocking aside, a 7970m is pretty much as fast as a 680m, so a 7.5% increase sounds a bit stingy, unless they are a total rebrand.

This and ONLY this is why I am holding out hope for radeon actually being the better gaming card finally. All 3 of the next gen consoles (Wii u, PS4, Xbox 720 or durango whatever u wanna call it) they all use Radeon GPU's. So basically 90% of the games coming out are going to be optimized to run on radeon cards. So while the radeon cards may be slightly less powerful they just might have enough optimizations from the game manufactures to keep up with the more expensive geforce cards.
That is all fine and dandy but after seeing how they left crossfire users halfway dead bleeding out in the back of an ally in las vegas. You can bet your bottom dollar I wont be the guinea pig to see if it works on my m18x without driver issues. Really doesn't matter if you have the greatest gpu ever if you can't keep enough employees hired to keep your drivers running at their peak. Radeon cuts jobs while nvidia adds jobs, no wonder their drivers work better.
And I'm not trying to hate on AMD or radeon I actually think they are in a good position with all the consoles using radeon they should have most games nicely optimized for their cards giving them a little advantage. Now let's see if they blow the advantage. -
-
On the web there are several videos that show the difference between having physicx or not, that is between nvidia and amd. If you have seen a preview of btf4 have to wonder if AMD will have a real future, I think
-
Future for AMD is already set. The next gen consoles will guarantee that........physicsX or not.

I agree dave98. In addition to drivers, the 6970M, 6990M and 7970M have never overclocked as well as 580M and 680M. While it might be fine as a gamer GPU, that issue with not overclocking well rules out the AMD product as being a good enthusiast GPU. If it is more powerful stock, cannot be overclocked very well and ends up being spanked by overclocked NVIDIA cards in the same generation, it's largely irrelevant that they are a little bit more powerful stock.
I don't see AMD taking over the console market as being entirely positive for anyone, regardless of their preference. Console ports are already some of the worst games a lot of the time. If that means there will be more console ports and fewer games optimized specifically for PC gaming, that's not a positive thing. I suspect AMD was the low cost leader and using their processors will allow the console OEMs to make more profit... might have more to do with money than quality or performance. We will have to wait and see what happens. I guess we will find out soon enough.
It makes me sad in a way. I see AMD aggressively pursuing the console world as a potential sign they are giving up instead of trying harder. Regardless of brand preference, AMD and NVIDIA customers need both brands to keep clawing at the jugulars and continue trading blows in the performance battle. If AMD more or less gives up on trying to beat NVIDIA in the PC performance realm, it will be really bad for everyone. -
Some really good points. I suspect the console manufacturers held something like a reverse auction and AMD were prepared to do the job for less (dropping their pants perhaps? Hopefully not).
It has got me wondering what tech AMD are putting in these consoles anyway.
Maybe next gen or GPU will be a little lacklustre after all. On one hand I'll be happy not to be obsolete, the other hand wants to see the mobile GPU's answer to Titan.. -

AMD was the only one that could offer a high performance CPU + GPU.
The cost saving for MSFT/Sony is huge by having CPU/GPU "integrated".
BTW.
Most here thinks "old PC way". Faster is not always better. Optimization is always better. Just look at consoles and console exclusive titles. Why are Uncharted for example so much better looking than all the other PS3 games? Optimization.
Cross platform gaming optimize for the lowest common ground. Thats why console gaming have held back PC gaming since 2005 with DX9.
Now when AMD have ALL console wins all games will be optimized for AMD. Its huge for them.
(and no. I am not an AMD fanboy. They don't have what I want in my PC rigs: 3D surround) -
People also forget that AMD has some huge debt and as a result crushing interest payments on those debts. Nvidia is a much bigger company by value than AMD and are posting a profit. AMD is losing money and it will remain so for quite some time.

8990M = Brand new GPU? -

No I dont want to see that >.< My M18x with 7970m's is on its way heh. I dont want to upgrade that soon haha -
Not to get too offtopic here, but I am not losing sleep over the "consolization" of things. If anything, the new consoles are DX11 capable so the lowest denominator will at least bring things up to speed on the PC end and likely we will finally see some useful tessellation (and optimized to boot) instead of just getting a DX11 patch that adds some cool handle bars on roadblocks (Crysis 2). Plus, visual fidelity differences between DX9 and DX11 is much less than say DX8 to DX9. John Carmack has long stated that each successive generational jump in graphics are going to get smaller and smaller despite major advances. That is just what happens as games become more lifelike. There was no mistaking the jump from Super Mario Brothers to Mario64. Honestly, Soul Calibur on Dreamcast in 1999 still looks pretty damn good! The jump from Say Tekken 3 to Soul Calibur was much greater than say Soul Calibur to Soul Calibur 5.
When new consoles launch there has always been this forum trending surge of "PC gaming is teh Dead lols." That's not happening anymore and almost is prompting the opposite response. Steam has done an incredible job of boosting online gaming distribution and probably has had a positive impact on decreasing piracy (Just speculation). I absolutely love the fact that my games are online forever and my library continues to grow in a few centralized hubs (Steam/Origin/direct2drive). When I upgrade computers, I can simply redownload games I want to play at very high speeds. If the ps3 with it's ridiculously hard to develop Cell+RSX (7800gtx) combo can push out UC3, God of War, Crysis 2/3 graphics, then I am sure the Desktop 7 series GPU equivalent in the PS4 will have some outstanding games. Throw in a couple Maxwell CPU's in a new Alienware (or existing) and we all will experience some amazing PC ports with much superior IQ in addition to many great PC exclusives since PC gaming sales have been surging. We may even see some developers going outside the box to put out some excellent PC exclusives as was very popular in 2003-2007. Finally, many developers are catering to the mobile marketspace with the popularity of phones and tablets so consoles if anything are at risk of dying out much moreso than the PC. PC gaming can never die because the games are created on them. Console gaming can die if developers feel they can't make any money on them. Vita and 3DS are getting crushed by phone/tablet gaming and the days of selling 120+ million consoles seem to be going by the wayside as well.
Anywhoo...back to the topic. The gamer card 8970 is not going to be a card AW enthusiasts should or will clamor to. It sounds like an old 8700GT that was quickly obsolete with the release months later with the 8800mGTX. If you have 6990/580/7970/680m cards, I would highly recommend hanging tight and waiting for Maxwell. All indications point to an order of magnitude increase worth upgrading fror. -

Crisis 3 is DX11 exclusive IIRC.
Hanging tight for 6 months is also pretty hard for many people, it will depend if the improvements are decent and what your budget is. -
@ Mr. Fox
Really? I think a 150mhz 24/7 overclock with no modification of fan-profiles isn´t too bad....
And in the desktop-territory a GCN-product overclocks normaly much better than a Kepler-product. -
I am curious about the ASIC quality of your cards though. Mine are just bordering 70%.. -
65% on mine. Pretty much non-overclocker, but i can run stock undervolted 100% stable.
-
Anyway I'm using the latest vBIOS which is incompatible with vBIOS patcher and I'm a little too lazy right now to go into manual editing..
-
ASIC 73.4%
first time i ever stumbled upon this value, interesting stuff indeedwould be curious to see what kinda value those 680M OC monsters get

Just to be the counter-fanboy to your green-lovin' ways, I've also seen 7850 GPU's go 53% overclock up to 1300core/6200memory, and similar OC's for higher-end chips.
Reference cooled.
What's your point? -

I've seen 1000mhz on stock volts, there tends to be more sample variation as time goes on with chips and tweaks are made for yields.

is the 8990m just a rumour at this stage or has it been announced? i currently have a 7970m and am considering going crossfire but if the 8990m is a legit option I will wait and get one.

interesting.

384bit memory bus for each and every one of the top 5 amd mobile gpus? very doubtful...

I'm just wondering is that card that they are selling have the ability for crossfire? Looking at the picture of the 8970m on ebay, where the connector for the crossfire cable should be, there isn't one. Or maybe i'm blind lol.
-
true, there isn't cause that's the MSI GPU I guess it was meant to run on GX60 successor.
-
irfan wikaputra Notebook Consultant
the pic was taken from wikipedia
rather than the bus width of 384 bit that sounds impossible, i am more concerned about the core config
1536:96:32
thats exactly the same as 7870 XT and 7970m was based on 7870
IIRC, the jump from 6970m to 6990m is similar to the jump in AMD 6850 to AMD 6870 (in terms of core config)
so if it really will be 1536 SPs with 900mhz core clock, wouldn't it be a beast?
i am just hoping, hehe
New 8970m/8990m Coming SOON!!
