You could try HIDevolution -
GTX580 sli or 6990 crossfire ?

Personally? - having had both, I would say 580m Sli hands down now I have seen the difference....though I ain't no FanBoy of either, just personal preference. -
teach me oh wise one... please explain how this is done lol
-
really guides are all over this forum and most of us post what settings we ran for benches and such
i learned more tinkering than from any guide...
check out Widezus guide on M17x unlocked bios it should give an idea of how to use M18x unlocked bios
than check out 2920/2960xm overclock thread and both m18x benchmark threads beggining to end loads of useful infos just check it out

Dang John! Nice! the benching never ends!

Hello, I have M18X with I7 2630QM and AMD 6990 Crossfire.
My Stock settings 3dmark11 Performance score is 6250 Points.
When i Goes to ''Results'' in 3dmark i saw a lot of AW m18 with same spec as my, and they have about 7500-8000 points
How does they do it?? After OC I can reach max. 6840
Its People scores :
Search
And my score AMD Radeon HD 6970M / 6990M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2630QM Processor,Alienware M18xR1 score: P6711 3DMarks
So whats the point ?! -
I used to have the same ?. To get 8000 points on 3dmark11 you have to hardcore over clock.
-
It's a lot of hardcore overclockers. These overclocks are not going to be gaming stable.
The point is to out do each other. Around here we like to compete and see who can get the highest benchmarks. Thats one reason you really shouldn't compare your scores to that on Futuremark. Heck I can get 7900 pts, on my old "outdate" M17x R2. Basically it's a hobby and those that like to try and chase the highest numbers, its a hobby. It's our kinda "game"
-
Ok, thanks for answers.
Too bad that I can get only 6840 Points then 3dmark isnt even passing test..
So they must play with voltage I guesS? -
Try to disable Tesselation in your CCC. You'll score higher for sure.
-
That should help quite a bit with AMD video cards. They cannot handle the added overhead of tessellation as well as NVIDIA.
-
Thanks Brother DR.
You should see the power options tab in the bios with the other tabs...
I concur! Although lately....I have been getting my gaming on in my spare time...
Disable tessellation in CCC and re run as many others have suggested. You will get like a 1k boost just from that.
Agreed
Agreed. -
Same here, Been letting the system fold when not in use, and if I get time, been playing some Unreal Tournament 3. Old classic, and it utilizes crossfire pretty well. Think the game came out in 2007.
-
I never got into that game for some reason... Might have to give it a go to see why..
-
I played single player for a bit about 6 months ago, but then I loaded it up a few weeks ago, and to my suprise, after running through the updates, it still has a large following for multiplayer online. But it's so fast pace it will make your head spin. I spawn, get killed, respawn, die ect. I can rack up 6-8 deaths a min lol
-
If you can do that...It means i can double that number....haha
-
lol, I don't know, I'm pretty terrible
I like to run and jump like a spaz with my finger in the trigger
-
That reminds me of that modern warfare 3 trailer with the noob and the vet...
-
lol, loved that trailer!
-
oh yeah Brother John got over that cpu drop on that one test I see
very nice my friend impressive
-
Indeed!
Thanks Brother Marc... It still needs working, but I gave up for the time being...The gpu part over 17k. I found out that it happens in the DT world as well... -
I think im finally gonna give a try at the vantage, 3dmark11 and 06 ill have some progress posted sometime soon. Then ill probably do what you mentioned above... Actually enjoy some gaming
Can i ask what you game at on the 580m's i am on the .92v... Ive seen 750-750-1500 recomended but im looking to go just a bit higher. Ram seems to need to be checked the pads maybe and repaste... They run little hot. What do you like as default mem and core? -
I talked to some of my team mates and they also said it was so....
As to gaming...i just run stock clocks and .92v and game for hours on end. Reason being, I game with vsync on. So the rest is pretty much useless to me. -
i live by vsync why render frames i dont need to i think to myself on my 60hz display... stock clocks should do in most any title released thus far...
-
Right now I'm playing the witcher 2 And it's grueling on SLI. i had to drop some settings to play fluently. Just started the game so i'm still in the prolog section.
-
I have that game set aside ill have to check it out. i went to play Skyrim last night had cpu up to high and had bsod and restart... but now im often getting a bsod of 116 ... i was tired so after setting cpu much lower and trying again still getting it here and there. Later im going to uninstall video driver and reinstall and run sfc/scannnow maybe a chckdsk and see whats up from there. If that doesnt solve it have you guys heard of bsod 116 being common on our 580m for broken hardware im dreadding that it is that
if its still happening should i flash the stock vbios back? (non .92v...) -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Well, its a video card timeout error so hopefully a fresh reinstall of freshly downloaded drivers after a sweep & clean would solve it.
-
Cool thats what i read i have fingers crossed later when i do just that... im hoping its because a driver file was corrupted on crash and not hardware related... Im hopeful since device manager didnt say error code 43 on the cards.... They thankfully are showing as normal. Thanks Stevie man been worried bout the babies
ill let ya know what happens tonight when i get back on the computer.
edit: i was worried because i glanced at various peoples description of thie video cards and bsod 116 and some found broken hardware at fault when drivers reinstall and even windows clean install didnt fix problems. So im hoping its nothing but corrupt driver files... I would hope Alienware flagship gpu is more durable than that... guess if its fine they are certainly pretty durable... i know one set of 6970m died with 8beep boot... These still boot so their one up on my last cards anyway lol -
1: Set everything back to stock.
2: Flash cards back to stock.
3: Run same everything to test for bsod.
4: Then start with over clocking cards once again to see if they bsod.
5: If so...Boot original hard drive in esata mode and try testing again...if it does it here.... one of your cards is going bad... -
thanks John much appreciated thats a very logical course of action
thanks again John
so this is what i did. Starting system as was from last night I booted, set cpu to stock. reBooted (with 750-750-1500 @.92v still as current bios) and went straight to Skyrim (ultra settings, some hd texture packs, couple of settings raised in .ini, max AA and AF offered in game with fxaa and hbao, ambient occlusion set to quality and transparency AA set 8x both via nvidia control panel seems to give about 29fps min outside in farthest view at angles showing plenty of scenery). So with Skyrim running like that it seems to push the cards right along and more than the majority of games out there... with a few that may be more intense... ill have to try the Witcher 2 soon. anyway the first minute and a half in the game the screen went black and few moments later the system rebooted itself. (yesterday it did that, or gave bsod ooo116 and one i had to shut it down from this black screen) so i had not changed anything yesterday other than going to a lower confirmed cpu speed and bsods kept happening on start but safe mode worked so i disabled Throttle Stop and HWiNFO (which auto started fan control too at logon) which obviously didnt fix the issue. So I flashed the vbios back to stock as first step... so cpu and gpus stock. Boot up and launch Skyrim and miss my couple more FPS without the overclock lol jk and test for awhile well i played enough to know it wasnt doing it... So my next step i took was overclocking to 725core on gpu and launching Skyrim again (on stock vbios via Nvidia Inspector and only on P0 3D clocks) and again i played awhile. Sometime past and I knew the issue was not making itself obvious. So lastly I left cpu still stock as is and reflashed the .92v vbios with 750core matched on the two power profiles. Again rebooted and launched Skyrim and played awhile and again no more issue to my suprise. At this point i was getting tired and am going to bed so i packed it in... Tommorow ill play for a few hours and see if its still a non issue at this point.
So thank you again John your a good man
Glad I did it that way under your suggestion as reinstalling the driver would have been useless at helping.
Stevie I still appreciate you saying it could have been
Any thought on if i should worry still of hardware or if a different additional bit of testing would be recomended? Ill test more on the game tommorow anyway. I mentioned the original crash that caused this was a cpu crash generic lack of voltage. So based on the supplied information can you tell me what might have happened and or why it may have happened starting with I know the cpu error caused lockups in system which effects all components... (like an hd can have corrupt data from some bsods Halts or crashing)? But you know did it somehow corrupt my vbios? Or driver... but driver hasnMt been reinstalled and vbios was only thing change dother than cpu going to stock and i did them seperate so i knew the issue existed even cpu at stock... Hmmm. Im tired and heading to sleep. Cheers and gratitude my friend. -
That is another part of the puzzle I forgot. Do a check disk as well. Boot into windows and un hide all system files. Check to see if you have any check file errors.
If you are using bclk..some times reverting it back to normal then re over clocking it can also clear up issues. -
okay yeah ill do the Check Disk. Ill set the folder options to view hidden files and show critical system files. How do I check for check file errors? at time was on stock baseclock as well as currently.
"If you are using bclk..some times reverting it back to normal then re over clocking it can also clear up issues" - i noticed that too and especially c,ertain frequency ranges (higher) can exhibit multiple system clock failures... Hard to notice but we know we can see read or write failures to memory or HD via sata ports and the video cards due to PCIE. Thats where Sandybridge got an Arrow to the Knee lol (inserted bad Skyrim Joke) with its multiple system clocks being derived from only one baseclock... Come on give us 3 atleast you know independent adjust ment of 3 baseclocks would be great if one was system clocks (sata pci usb) and a ram base clock and cpu heck all of them seperated you could boost pci if you wanted a little... but mainly the cpu speed should be an independant baseclock... they can fit it all on these chips coming up nm fabrication is getting smaller fast
okay lol night for real
-
Remember, we are already doing allot for not having anywhere near all the voltage settings or massive heat sinks and fans...
But home built coolers help to compete on that level....
As to check disk, it will show a file0000 whatever number right in the root directory. I just found one on mine with 4.6 gigs of data. -
very true about the fact that despite not being desktop equipped hardware that we have accomplished quite a lot
And LMAO about the home built coolers ...
we try we try
its plenty fun even with the side effects
(good thing this is all basically a bench hard drive for now. I dont mind if i end up having to reinstall windows lol.
Okay so ill check for that kind of file. They are orphaned, lost and corrupt files on the hard drive basically right? So you had 4.6gigs of it from your own work
lol bet mines pretty far up there too haha
Conrats again on 3dmark06 34200+ and gpu 17K
-
That 4.6 gig of data came from the display adapter crashing.... allot.
Thanks on props for 34k, but the gpu score doesn't stand till it can be completed on a full run. But it is nice to know it's possible.
-
Hmm, I wonder how large the file is on my benchmarking drive. Lol I remember at one point I checked the drive info and it was something like 70 hours, and over 1000+ unsafe shutdowns. maybe even less hours. I tortured that 40GB SSD. Had to have it RMAed and the replacement is still going strong. Though I don't bench as much now days.
-
im over 5k on one of my drives...
-
off topic: get a budget R3 man i need some competition in the R3 thread, its dead unless you have a 2920 & 580....
-
Yea, it is pretty dead without the XM stuff. I would, but i'm in the hunt for a house at the moment with a baby on the way, so the wife would probably kill me if I did lol. Plus theres no RGB
-
Extreme CPU
Non-Extreme CPUSo, nobody is benching any more? C'mon guys... let's see some action. It's about having fun, not just hitting numbers. Sort of like drag racing... you're faster than some and some are faster than you, but it's still all for fun.Last edited by a moderator: Feb 6, 2015 -
I'll be benching mine once it get it in on Thursday
-
hey fox Dell replacing my m18x so will be back in soon
-
yeah im in the same boat, i have 4 kids though .......i got lucky and go this as a replacement for a $700 m15x......yeah the RGB spoiled me , im already looking for a replacement screen to try and shove in this thing, this screen isnt horrible but its a FAR cry from the R2 display..
-
Awesomeness! Looking forward to seeing both of your benching runs, bros Blink and Dan.
-
***EDIT*** Didn't realize there was a seperate thread on this
Did you guys see this? Liquid cooled M18x

Read that in the other thread, looks VERY cool...no pun intended LOL
-
So, why isn't anyone benching? It's sad to see this thread inactive with all the those wicked M18x beasts out there. Time to cut 'em loose and let 'em run, boys. AMD guys, here's a benchmark that's optimized for your systems. Now is your chance for an NVIDIA smack-down. Any takers?
