    that would sacrifice the visuals of the game only to get more FPS
    and indeed after 40 FPS, any game is playable

    but everything is personal preference, I do not buy latest-tech to play at low settings and if I can't play on the laptop just jump to my desktop ;)

    Agree... very personal as far as preference. It's only when things are competitive that the eye candy does not matter so much. If I can get faster FPS with less load on my system, I like that because there's less heat and hopefully longer life. Gaming (and benchmarking) can shorten the life span if pushed too hard all the time.

    Crysis benchmark does not have any default settings. Everything has to be set manually... no way around it. I see your point about the ability of the cards. Consistency is hard to achieve whenever human intervention is involved, thus the benefit of using default settings whenever possible. It creates a level playing field as far as the software environment is concerned, which leaves only hardware and hardware performance tweaks as the variables in play. And, that's sort of what benching is all about, correct? Hardware and tweaking skills?

    I realize this is just my opinion and only offer it as such. I look at the benchmark defaults sort of like a race track. You cannot put 2 identical or similar cars on 2 different tracks and get a consistent comparison. If you put them both on the same track, you can. When the track is straight and flat, without any obstacles or alternate lanes of travel, the car with the most power and the ideal gear ratio is going to most likely get to the other end the fastest if both drivers are equal or similarly skilled.

    ----------------

    @DR650SE - as a basline for the i7 2720QM/HD6970 CFX, here is a new Heaven benchmark on default settings with Dell's driver package installed, GPUs at factory stock clock settings.
    Avg FPS 52.8 - Min FPS 33.7 - Max FPS 114.8 / Score: 1331
    [IMG]
    Can we get the same results for a couple more 6970 CFX, 6990 CFX and 580 SLi, then experiment with setting adjustments to see how the different cards respond to changes in benchmark settings? That would be a nice comparison.

    John - do you know if this version can be installed along side of Heaven DX11 2.5 and run without affecting the other installation? I am assuming it can if installed in a different directory, but I'm just curious if you've already tried it.

    I'll run Heaven on the 6990's (I'll be staying at the stock speeds as its for work more than play) and post it when I get home, just got the machine wiped and reinstalled last nite to the SSD. When I was playing around last nite I recall having around 40ish fps with everything maxed but tessellation.

    Good god!!!! - I did exactly the same thing....I launched it, went out the room....thought hmmm...thats odd, can still hear music....this was like maybe 20minutes after.....it was only then that I realised I forgot to hit "benchmark"......coulda been there all night long.....hahaha

    Anyway, Stock figures for my run of Heaven 2.5 (ran at default settings) for my rig with 6970's and 11.6 AMD drivers was:

    FPS = 52.5
    Scores = 1323
    Min FPS = 25.0
    Max FPS = 113.7

    I will try some Gpu OC'd runs too.....maybe some non-default settings too to compare with previous non-default settings...just for fun. See how much my 6970's get beat by lol!

    so 10% difference in stock clocks between 6970M CF and 6990M CF) but stevie has 2920xm CPU, while john only 2630qm... so probably we can expect up to 3-5% better result for 6990M CF systems!

    Just ran Heaven again, still stock gpu clocks and 11.6 for my 6970's....used the same settings as Speedy and Bar Code. Results were:

    FPS = 31.0
    Scores = 780
    Min FPS = 9.4
    Max FPS = 80.4

    Not bad for my little 6970's 'eh? - I will try an OC'd run later, again using default and "Speedy & Bar Code's" settings! - actually quite suprised that my 6970's were as close to the 6990's and 580's as they are! - less than 4fps difference really suprised me between mine and 6990m & 580m.....

    Just tested min with Heaven 2.5 with 6990's and 11.8 (stock dell) drivers no OC specs are on my sig:

    ------------------------------------------------------------------
    Test #1 (Default settings)

    Scores: 417
    Min FPS: 5.9
    Max FPS: 41.8

    Render: direct3d11 | Mode: 1920x1080 4xAA fullscreen | Shaders: high | Textures: high | Filter: trilinear | Anisotropy:16x | Occlusion: enabled | Refraction: enabled | Volumetric: enabled | Tessellation: extreme

    3DMark 11 P6297

    3DMark Vantage P21957

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

    Are my benchmarking scores comparble/average scores for the 6990's xfire? I feel its somewhat lower...
    Gotta say, a little disappointed by the results compared to 580's SLI :(

    Ok,

    Here's my results from a run using Speedy settings ;) - gpu's OC'd to 825/1150 (my gpu's will go further but I thought I would start a bit lower to make the 580's and 6990's look good lol - j/k you guys who have 'em......you know im just messin' with ya!!)

    Anyway, here they are for 6970's - looks like the 6990's is around 8% faster than my 6970's - the 580's are around 6% faster.....based on Speedy's results and Bar Code's results.

    FPS = 36.5
    Scores = 920
    Min FPS = 12.0
    Max FPS = 96.5

    Gpu temps = Primary 80c / Secondary 78c (on Cooler, full blast ambient room temp ....hmmmm....lets just say quite warm for the UK - probably mid 20's)

    One last bench before I call it a night.

    Same as before with the settings used by speedy and barcode. This time, OC'd my gpu's to 840/1175.....Results for 6970's:

    FPS = 37.2
    Scores = 936
    Min FPS = 12.7
    Max FPS = 97.8

    Gpu1 = 80c
    Gpu2 = 78c

    Probably as good as I can get outta my rig, might go a bit more but pretty good I feel.

    The way I see it (and its just going by this particular bench) the 6990 takes the crown, 580 runner up and my trusty little 6970's bringing up the rear (but VERY close to 580 which shocked the pants off me lol). I was actually quite gobsmacked to see that i could get so close to Bar Code's OC'd 580m score....I was less than 4% off it with my 6970's........

    One thing I am not sure of is how cpu impacts on this bench. Obviously I do have a 2920 but when I looked at my stock default run compared to Mr Fox's (2720 cpu & 6970 xf) stock default run, we were pretty much the same at just over 52fps - conclusion to me? - cpu not that important here....but I could be wrong.

    Here is my STOCK stock stock 6990 Vantage Bench.
    Literally pulled it out of the box, downloaded Vantage, ran it ...

    AMD Radeon HD 6970M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2630QM Processor,Alienware M18xR1 score: P20507 3DMarks

    2 Interesting points ... 21700 GPU ... 17000 CPU score (2630) ...

    The other is that the FPS range is CRAZY on this... I am hitting like 110 FPS at some points but then hitting like 25 30FPS at other points. The High end is CRAZY much higher then the 6970 .... which stock was hitting like 60fps ....

    I haven't updated drivers or anyhting, like I said this is right out of the box ... so hopefully the drivers will create more stability.

    Well... I'm a little scared to mess with it.

    It sounds like quite a process and I'm such a noob that I have problems programming names and numbers into my new cell phone.

    LOL.......

    I would like to wait to see if you find any down side to that driver.
    And then I will need to learn this download and install process.

    Will you guys and gals help me?

    LOL.....

    Think of it as helping an old man cross the street.
    That should be worth 2 rep points for sure.

    GPU: 24347 !!! CPU: 17721

    These are straight out of the box, installed vantage then Trixx, GPU-Z ran em.

    Temps max in the 80s. Ambient is around 25.
    Idle temps are 50ish.

    One weird thing a few times AFTER the bench, the fans kick on to 100% and make a bunch of noise and stay there for a minute or two then shut off... but they don't do it DURING the bench ...

    Ya I noticed the fans doing that too, I'm thinking a glitch of some sort. Maybe the bench tweaks the fan or something on exit (only noticed it with 3dmark stuff, heaven doesn't do that for me).

    Looks like you have some good cards.
    That smuge payed off.
    How far can you push them?
    My cards have never been to 80'sC though... I keep my room at 20C and PC on a cooler.
    78... 79... 80C at the most.

    Yes, you were right. That's exactly what happened. I was enjoying Metro 2033 with the core at 740, dx11 and high settings and I forgot to lower it. In the game I had no problems whatsoever; it ran smooth as butter, but in vantage, at the end of new Calico, I actually saw the fps dropping fast -- throttling badly. Anyways, I'm not pursuing benchies scores with these cards this time around, many are already way into it, so I'll pass further attempts. I ran that one one vantange because having the 580sli I was asked to for reference, but that's all for me.

    I might have hit the out of the box limit on my cards ... the core 860 and 1100 mem clocks, course thats just sitting in my rather warm living room. but getting a 24500 GPU score isn't too shabby on a 2630 CPU I think....

    I will take it up to the office tomorrow and tweak the mem clocks and see how high I can push them too ... but thats it for me for tonight. This thing is awesome ... now the question of whether to repaste or not ...
    Unless someone is in the Niagara or GTA regions in Ontario with experience repasting ???

    I made some runs of Stalker with default settings too. But I wanted to highlight the difference between these high ends gpus by getting the max out of them. But sure you're right the results will be more consistent with default settings for everybody :)

    Here is one at 800-1000:

    Lol is just luck because I have to reinstall windows on my SSD due to the new GPU's device ID's or some my computer was stuttering on the benchmarks even reinstalling drivers so I decide to reinstall windows and the first benchmark I download after all the windows updates was heaven and you saw the results i am sure with the time once I start installing more crap on my laptop the score will go down because all the services and crap running on the background for now I am happy because this screen is perfect :)
