    Sweet!! Excellent overclock!
Do you think about getting a 2920xm?

Here's mine again too. My cpu overclock accounts for the majority of my score. I can see the 6990m cfx and 580m sli breaking 30k easily.

580m SLI doesn't seem too popular on here, as I have yet to see some legit scores from an owner. *Taps foot while waiting impatiently for mine to arrive*

That is because believe it or not.....alot of us value money haha - keep in mind the majority of us are relatively young and not as well funded as you senior folk (for example, I am only 23)

The GTX 580m are just too expensive compared to the 6990m

here u go!! As you can see a slight overclock and still beating the heavly overclock ati @850, if the throttling issue with the 580msli can be sorted out, im sure these can hit over 800mhz as well. which will add another 2000+ on the gpu score.

it will be intresting to see what you can do Nicholaus.rossi once you get your hands on the 580m

Not yet, M8. The engineering team hasn't even finalized the number of pipes yet (most likely 4) and the amount of copper they wish to add. This is taking far too long, but what can I do :(

I have run stable at 865 1175 a couple times ... one run I clocked a 25K GPU score ... my damn CPU is killing me I think ...

    AMD Radeon HD 6970M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2630QM Processor,Alienware M18xR1 score: P22507 3DMarks

But my temps are rock solid with stock paste, highest I saw running vantage on one of the internal sensors was 84C ... and thats with all my runs.

I dind't know voltage was the issue here, I just know it gets flickery and then craps out ... OR, it just craps out suddenly. But temps aren't the issue so there still seems to be a lot of room to push these cards....

Yeah, once you get the throttling issue sorted out (they seemed to fix it on the M17x-R3 by reverting back to an older motherboard BIOS revision), then you should be able to hit around 760mhz core and about 820ish core with the overvolted VBIOS. That should easily break the 30K GPU barrier in Vantage. The 6990Ms might still win in 3d11 however, even if the 580Ms are overvolted...

Anyone want to fire up some Crysis 2 benchmarks?

If you can get a benching program for C2 that is stand alone, I would be happy to run it.

Something I need to ask ... anyone with a NEW system. Have you needed to do the regedit and search for Enable ULPS in order to run overclocking ????

I had to on my 6970 system. But when I search the registry on this system nothing comes up, and it overclocked just fine without having to go through the system and change all the values. Just wondering if ULPS has been taken out ...

Someone roll back your M18x vbios and see if the 580m throttling still occurs. The m17x folks found that that prevented the throttling.

    Did you read this thread
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m18x/600215-alienware-m18x-bios-a02-4.html

there is only 2 bios for the m18x 1 a00 which was the first 470 and 6970
and now we have a02 which is for the 580 and 6990

    I have already tried this!

Having said this, i see the ati cards are hitting over 80c for gpu's mine will not past the 73c no matter what even at overclocked 724 still will not past 73c load which leads me to believe this is a safety precaution which im happy to have.

Clean install made a very slight improvement. Wasn't really worth the time it took.

Still seems quite low imo. I have the 2630qm with 6970's and I'm hitting 7500 points in 3DMark11.
Then again, my cards were clocked at 850/1200 and a bclk of 105MHz.
    But still...

Nope, no real way to overvolt it yet. Same as with the 6970. It's pretty much stuck where it's at. You can undervolt, just not overvolt. :(

I cannot go above 820/1100 without a BSOD or freezing in 3DMark11 from the GPU drivers. If I try to go over 103MHz on BCLK and try to boot my BIOS starts beeping and my system halts. Please post your settings from BIOS. Perhaps I have something set incorrectly. Maybe a photo would be the easiest if you have a camera/phone handy. I'm not sure why there would be any difference between the two systems, but the higher settings would certainly account for the difference in scores. (You would probably have similar scores downclocked to where I am set.) There might possibly be a relationship between your 105GHz BCLK and the ability to set the GPU at 850/1200. I'm not having any problems with temps.

Installed my 2920xm ES and got back up and running on Wednesday. Overall, I'm happy with the performance: I've tried up to 105mhz bus x 36 multi (3.780Ghz) and maintain temps under 82c load in SuperPi. I haven't tried higher, but will likely leave it as is since that's well enough for me. I'd say a prett-ay, prett-ay good deal for 300 clams.

One thing I did notice is my idle temps are a good deal higher than on my 2720qm at mid-40s to mid-50s (seems to jump around a lot) and there's much more variance in temps when the CPU is doing work. I'm using Artic MX-4 and the dual-pipe heatsink.

The higher CPU speed did bump my Vantage scores up to the high 23,000s :)

Interesting...Maybe you should try repasting again. My CPU with ICD24 stays around 38-43C when idle. BTW, what's your max cpu temp at those clocks when running Vantage?

Yes, I gave it a shot and the temps seem to be 1-2c lower than with the TX-4 but the later is much easier to apply and clean.

Hm maybe because they turned off Tesslation, Depht of Field and Physix. We all know AMD is rather weak on Tesslation side. Need to test it for myself on my M17X-R2 - last time I played it, I got approx. 15-20fps but with high settings and tesslation on.

Some gpu chips just OC better than others....ask Scook9....apparently his cards were lemons and sucked at OC. Same reason I can OC mine to max 850/1200 on certain occasions....no two gpu chips will be exactly the same in terms of overclockability.

Our cards are quite similar of course Stevie ... mine run 865/1175 stable.

    I haven't tried 850/1200 ... and I think we are hitting voltage limits ... :(

I tried to create a thread for comparison so I could generate a baseline for people to know if their cards are OK or crappy.

If I get some more feed back I will start posting some baseline data

Meh, I'm over wasting my time tearing down this thing to run a few degrees lower -- I'm fine with my temps as is. Plus, I think MX-4 is one of the pastes that takes a few days to settle. Haven't seen temps over 80c in Vantage at 3.78ghz.

Yes. Very similar. Of course, your 6990's are a bit different as you have a higher base clock than my 6970's....715/900 vs 680/900 so about 35mhz on core speed.

I cant get my 6970's past 850 but if I had those extra 35mhz....assuming i could push my 6970's THAT much further (which I cant) id be about on par at max 885-ish. Looks like you got a good set of 6990's for OC. ;) - 865/1100 seems to be a very good clock imho.

Did you set all multipliers to 36/37? I had mine set to 4x36, 3x37, 2x39, 1x43 and the max temp in 3Dmark06 hit 91C (room 28C, no cooler and no elevation). Got 6.8k CPU score.
