Well Scook my set of 6970s were POSs too ... I could hardly OC the, despite watching everyone else rock em ... and now well, my sig says it all. Crispy OCing.

I am thinking of repasting these puppies and squeezing a little more out of them, but I have a paper I am working on and I need to design 2 courses for the fall ... so my time is pretty cramped for the next few weeks ... maybe I will earn a break.

Hot damn, I am betting you beat this one too ... but I am still loving this ...
AMD Radeon HD 6970M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2630QM Processor,Alienware M18xR1 score: P7735 3DMarks
GPU score 8874
-
PS link it ... I want to see the sickness
-
His overall score is higher, but your GPU score of 8874 is higher than his. He is skunking us primarily because his M18x has the 2920XM Extreme CPU.
His scores...
Yours...
Mine...
It all makes sense, I think... Now, all I need is a pair of 6990 modules and I'll be smokin'...
Considering I have the little brother 6970 CFX, I think my P7398 overall score is excellent.
The 6970s are definitely holding me back, but I'm not going to push them more than I have. -
AHHHH I thought he meant he beat my GPU score ... I mean, I know there is no way I can compete with a 2920 ... none.
But the GPU scores I am rocking are very much making me think I should buy one and toss it in here. -
Might as well... they're priced right... Intel sandy bridge mobile Proceseor i7 2920xm 2.4G | eBay and this is a reputable vendor. It's the overall system benchmark score that matters most.
Look at Steviejones' 3DMark11 score with the 6970 and 2920XM...
The CPU definitely makes as much difference in the overall score as the GPU, and the CPU's you and I have will actually hold back the GPU from achieving its full potential. You graphics scores would probably go up just by adding the 2920XM to your system. -
very very tempting ... if I decide I am going to repaste ... I guess I should get that too ... and the dual pipe HS from dell.
throwing in 1866 Ram is my next move though -
I bet you'll get a whole lot more bang for the buck spending the money on the CPU than you will spending on 1866 memory. I doubt that our 1333 RAM is a significant bottleneck for either of us.
-
Oh I agree, its just that the ram is SOOOO less intimidating to install
-
and i beat you all...
over all that is..
http://3dmark.com/3dm11/1635620 -
Yes, you certainly did. It would be terribly tragic if you didn't considering the higher prices of your components.
It would really suck to have more expensive hardware that performed no better. Your score is totally excellent.
-
Compare the price of the upgrade to the original difference in cost for purchasing an M18x with the OEM 2920 CPU and it's very affordable... less than half the cost.
I've had it down to the motherboard and I'm confident you'll do just fine. Grab the service manual from support.dell.com and keep track of where the variety of screws belong, take it slow and gentle removing the keyboard surround and you'll have no problems. I know you can do it. -
Dual-Core??
-
ebay descrip. shows Dual-Core??

This is the farthest I go score: P8293 3DMarks

OsOs - the seller doesn't have the best English. It's either a typo or incomplete. It should say quad core, unless you consider there are two dual core dies. In that case it could be accurate to say all of our i7 CPUs are dual core dual cores.
That's insanely fast (looks in mirror - yup, green as a leprechaun). Congrats! +1 rep. Might want to PM DR650SE to see if that belongs on the leaderboard. To qualify, you may need to post a screen shot with more info ( example post).

Nice score Johnksss let's see what the 580's have to say about this
Andale ! andale ! arriba !
-
VERY very nice !
-
yea I know its only 300 this way instead of 900 via Dell ....
As for the confidence, I appreciate it, I THINK I will do it ... I was planning on holding out for the 2860 processor ... or buying someones 2920xm off them when they upgrade to the 2960 .... but maybe I can't wait
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Nice score John, gives me something to aim at
-
What exactly will the 2960 offer over the 2920? It's not going to be like the 920XM vs. 940XM will it? Just one extra multiplier? Which was pretty much a pointless issue with throttle stop. Though I suppose the extra multi would help since TS isn't effective with SB, or last I remember it wasn't.
-
Higher base close at the little documentation I've read. Similar to the 2820/2860 higher base clock, not sure if anything else has changed.

Rumor is expected to present four new Intel Core i7 Mobile over the last three months of the year. These include a new flagship, the quad-core processor clocked at 2.7 GHz 2960XM
Core i7 2640m, 2760QM i7, i7 2860QM 2960XM and i7 are the four new entries scheduled for the fourth quarter (perhaps the second half of September), the family of Intel's mobile Core i7 processors. To publish this indiscretion is the website World CPUs . All these solutions will be based on 32 nm Sandy Bridge architecture and how these will integrate the HD 3000 graphics core with a core frequency of 650 MHz, can reach 1.3 in Turbo Boost.
The Core i7 2640m should be a dual-core processors with Hyper-Threading with 2.8 GHz (3.5 GHz Turbo Boost), 4 MB L3 cache and 35-watt TPD. The Model Core i7 2760QM should instead have four physical cores, support for Hyper-Threading and frequency of 2.4 GHz (3.5 GHz Turbo Boost), 6 MB L3 cache and a TDP of 45 watts.
The Core i7 2860QM 2760QM is similar to, but in addition to having 8 MB of L3 cache, works at 2.5 GHz (3.6 GHz Turbo Boost). Finally here is the Core i7 2960XM, quad-core processors with Hyper-Threading Technology will replace the 2920XM as the top of the range. The new solution should have a frequency of 2.7 GHz (3.7 GHz Turbo Boost) and TDP of 55 watts. In practice, an increase of 200 MHz from the model currently on the market. -

2 multipliers but you can overclock the 2920 to the same speed now I don't know if the 2960 will run cooler could be due to improved tech -
yep, time for the 580's to shine.
haha that score didnt last long at all. -
Ahh, ok. From what I read they also said the 2960 would be released the fourth trimester of 2011.
fourth trimester?
@John, Yea your GPU score got pretty well beat. Throw some dice on it!
@Speedy, is it really newer tech? Or is it just added speed? Guess I'll have to do more reading. My guess is it'll be the same tech, just added speed. Here is one quick thing I looked at showing it's the same 32nm tech.

Oddly enough CPU-World has the max power of the 920XM at 120W which is possible if you use a lot of cooling and throttle stop
-
i have hit a 8850 on gpu...but didnt save it
-
Close
but still your overall score crushes mine ...
crushes
I wonder what I could get with a different CPU ...
Does the CPU scale the GPU score up as well ? or would my gpu score stay the same and the other score rise giving me a bette over all score, but the same GPU score ? -
oh man...3dmark is back to that stealing scores again scook9. lol
looks at the user name for this 8874 gpu score.

The newer chips MAY be a newer stepping that is a little more efficient but other than that I see no reason to not be happy with my 2920
-

??
I have been out of it since like February on benching and 3DMark, so they are attaching a username to submissions now so you can't claim someone else's score as your own? -
well it has me claiming that link i just posted as mine...
-
Bah you are purposefully stealing my score !!! because secretly you wish you had the 2630 !!!
lol -
now that is a good one.
looks like you'll need to rebench it because i just deleted it from my scores..LOL! sorry.
but i cant be hosting scores that are not mine..
-
Dudes !?!?! now my score doesn't link to ... my score !?!??!
-
we know you did it..so for the time being..that's all that really counts..
-
lol attached a screen cap !
Either way, I am going to beat that score ... I want a 9K Gpu score !!! -
3DMark06 and lower will scale the GPU score with the CPU. Vantage and 3DMark11 won't. They are pretty efficient at keeping CPU and GPU independant of one another. 3DMark11 especially. But a better CPU/Physics score would help your overall score, especially in the combined test.
Also your screen cap is way zoomed out, looks a little low res. -
iPhantomhives Click the image to change your avatar.
Any advise how to push gpu score? mine seem extremely low compare to others.
-
iPhantomhives Click the image to change your avatar.
I will try see if I can better score for gpu. That score was late night forgot to screenie. -
FYI - the link in your signature is pointing to someone else's benchmark... someone with 920XM but 6970 CFX and 12GB of RAM.
I would not use the words "extremely low" to describe your GPU score because it's actually very good, just not the highest. What are your core and memory clocks set at on the GPUs? Some cards just don't OC as well as others and there may be nothing you can do about that. My cards will not go over 820 on the core clocks without the atikmpag.sys driver crashing my system. Others can take theirs to 850+ without problems. -
It also says P9337
-
and that 9337 is wrong as well
damn, should have refreshed the screen..haha
edit:
no, that's his score though..the modules add up to 12gb -
John - iPhantomhives' signature says he has 16GB and 6990 CFX, but the benchmark the link goes to is for someone with 12GB and 6970 CFX.
-
dont that say...16 gb in august @ 2133?
-
iPhantomhives Click the image to change your avatar.
I'm using 4gb x 2 , 2gb x 2 @ 1333 ATM , it's 6990m but bench says 6970m
It's 2920 , not 920 btw.
I'm still waiting HyperX 2133mhz ram , from what I thought it release on Aug. -
it will run at 1600mhz on the m18x as that is the max it can do.
-

2920xm will works with 2133 max
