    AMD Radeon HD 6970M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2720QM Processor,Alienware M18xR1 score: P7183 3DMarks

This is my score with the same settings with the following:
2720, 6970CF 8gig ram 11.8 preview. Quite a few hundred lower than what you are getting. I am running 800/1000. Is your memory clock higher? My GPU's are hardly sweating at these settings and very ambient house temps.

Oh..ya that probably explains it. I thought it was a bigger discrepancy. Only a few points.

So what is the final verdict on the STOCK 6970 Vs 6990. What real world gaming FPS difference is it? About 5FPS or so?

Your results are consistent with 2720 CPU and 6970 CFX. Appears to be working appropriately. Very similar to what my system is producing.

    not buying that story!. :D
you can run the chip at 2630 speeds if that's the case. :D

    side note:
would have been cool if they gave core support. meaning run 1 2 3 or 4 cores with ht on or off.

Actually I tried running it forced below 2.4 ghz turbo off but I didn't make any sense and was losing 1hr battery life. Anyway, I already sold it and used the money for the HS project, lol

Using the same workaround as last night (see above), I just posted my highest ever Vantage score also. It will be interesting to see what the scores will be if repasting allows me to run GPU1 synchronized at the same higher speed as GPU0.

This just goes to show how much difference in performance there can be with two identical cards, even when installed in the same system. It's unfortunate that there is such a variance between the two pieces of video hardware installed in my system. It does not say much for the quality control of the vendor Dell is buying their hardware from. I think Scook can vouch for that in a big way.

you right on my system if I run a single card I can push 865-1150 but if I enable Xfire the max is like 845-1090 so my secondary gpu can't go that high :(
it's not a Dell fault like you say and not even AMD because the cards are not intended to run at those speeds I just hate AMD for locking the voltage because you find the limits of your hardware right away

and i know there is much more you can do with tricks like deep freeze laptops :D but that doesn't count for everyday use :)

I just installed 3dmark11 and patched it up. I ran it for the first time with 6990m xfire and the score was 6300 with 2720qm all stock. But the damn thing was a stutter mess! Even with 36 fps ot was choppy.

This is with dells latest drivers cap LATEST CAP as well. Man thos amd experience has been horible so far.

lol that was fast your people must be working real hard on the HS project ;)

now I see what you was talking about when you say the max you can get is 3.7ghz with the ES cpu I think is a bios limitation because the chip is not recognized properly you can also see the integrated gpu is missing from the bios settings even if you can switch to it

I could be wrong but we will see when more people start getting this cpu's I am happy for now because with a base clock of 1.04 my cpu runs at almost 4ghz the max temp in prime 95 stress test is 83c and for $288 I can't complain :D

try this:download driver sweeper uninstall gpu driver from device manager and choose delete all device software then go to the programs and uninstall all amd software and reboot press F8 while booting up until you see the option for safe mode pick safe mode and then run driver sweeper delete all the AMD stuff and reboot then isntall DELL drivers and install 11.8 over those after reboot :)

Nice temps! With no elevation, no cooler pad and room 28-30C I couldn't keep the temps below 90C in prime95 :(

Totally agree, for 300$ the cpu is a monster. Maybe some day I'll get another one but for now will enjoy the extra battery life and passivle cooling, hehe. With the 2630QM+2-piped HS the CPU fan doesn't even spin @ idle and never goes above 50% in Prime95 (68C max, lol)

So the Radeon 6990m beats the gtx 485m for the same price any day, right?
I just bought a Sager from xoticpc that gets here today but they just released a new model with almost all the upgrades I put on the original so with the 30 day money back guaranty I could swap it for a machine with 4 more gigs of 1,666mhz RAM and the 6990 for 250$ less than I'm paying now..

    nice!
hummmm, mine was running pretty damn good..i got like 4.5 hours use on it yesterday. and still had time left..but i was not one it 100 percent of the time.

no. 3d11 stutters. even on desktop cards it stutters...so for sure it's going to stutter here from time to time.
run those clocks using wprime 1.55

coming from someone who benched dx11 at 5.6 ghz and a gtx over clocked to 1200/1200...it micro stutters all over the place.

    test 3 is ridiculously stuttering.

not sure what your benching my man.
    and that goes for 580/480/5870

and i just ran a 5870 right now and it's micro stuttering with a single gpu.

just like vantage does the same exact thing in places...even if you bench 1 gpu or 4

I was actually just wondering where you were yesterday as I sat updating the M17x Benchmarking leaderboards. How you been? You joining the crowd anytime soon? Ivy Bridge time perhaps? Now if only we could get TheMoo and a few of the old characters back. Maybe even start "The Random Thread - Alienware Edition - Part 2" :p

Okay, so it actually looks like I'll be saving close to 400$ actually.. so should I bother having them OC it for close to 90$? I'm totally inexperienced with overclocking but that just seems ridiculous since its a software OC and not a hardwear OC. (They say they average about 10% faster GPU and CPU speeds with their OC.)
Does the 6990m OC well compared to the gtx548m? After all they are the the same price from these guys.

Any opinions on if its practical to RAID the two 750gig 7200rpm hardrives? (and what RAID would be best)

again...I have only had one hand me down laptop from 1912 powered by a horse on a treadmill and a refurbished dell studio so I know nothing about high performance computers

John - If Windows is installed with the BIOS set to RAID (not AHCI) and you install Intel RST, you can then convert your drives to RAID0 within Windows using the RST software. Do not attempt to create the drive memberships using Ctrl+I during boot or you'll hose your Windows installation. Your secondary HDD it will be converted to appear as a second partition. This worked flawlessly with my identical 500GB hybrid drives.

While not all cards OC the same by any means ... I am getting the distinct impression that the 6990m OCs between 820-870/1000-1200 and runs rock solid stable. In other words, it overclocks like crazy.

You should NOT get them to OC it for you. It is extremely easy to do. All you need to do is download Sapphire Trixx or MSI afterburner. With trixx you run the program, click the settings tab, click disable ulps, and start settings on windows startup. Punch in the numbers you want to overclock to ... and poof yur done.

** btw that means between a 15-30% overclock. You could just set it at a 15% OC and always run it like that with no problem. Wont even really effect your temps.

Its very easy to do, its a very easy interface... it should take you less then 3 minutes, no joke.

Shaden -for the life of me, I cannot get MSI Afterburner to do anything. It runs OK, but absolutely nothing is adjustable for me. Have you or anyone else figured out how to enable its adjustments? Is it just something I am not doing correctly? I really like its feature set, but I find it to be totally worthless for overclocking.

Trixx works absolutely perfectly for me. Unfortunately, it does not have all the features that Afterburner does.

You're referring to the CPU OC'ing for extra money, not the GPU. I don't think they will OC the GPU's for you from the factory.

I have a slightly different opinion, but Shaden is correct that you can do this yourself, and it's not difficult. However, if you have the $90 to spend, I say why not? It will be covered by your warranty OC'd, but if you do the OC and break something, maybe not. So, I say go for it.

Bummer! I was hoping you would know the answer. I tried it again less than 48 hours ago and "no workey" for me. (Last time I tried Afterburner was on the R2... same thing.)

I didn't do it for you ... but I will pretend I did because you were so thankful.

Hahaha, joke jokes. Its actually one of the things I am loving about this community, people really being here for each other and learning from each other ... its been an awesome experience. Only makes buying my Alienware all that better of a choice. Crap AW should advertise this damn forum on their website.

Can't wait til you join the fun Drifter.
