    1: what version of vantage
2: did you try without over clocking cpu or bclk
3: reset ccc back to default
    4: do not run hwinfo

keep same over clock. reset ccc to default. then run bench again. see if it still locks up.

or lower bclk just a bit.

I have not been able to run the Crysis bench yet on my 6990m's (freezes on start of 2nd run every time) but my 6970s put up better numbers stock.....

I will get back with this info

    Vantage 1.0.3.1
CPU is stock level 3 in bios (no bclk)
CCC set to defaults (but ATI Tray Tools running)
    No HWInfo32 running

Finished 1st test but crashed at end of 2nd in vantage - same thing, just froze and had to hard restart

Going to try full default for Bios now see if that helps it along.....but level 3 has been rock solid for me so far

Here are 3DMark 06, Vantage, and 11 all stock CPU (really stock) and stock GPUs with official 11.8 installed (using inf from Dell driver to get CF working). I also did Crysis benchmark.

Seems that the very minor blck OC I had may have been messing stuff up? I just had it at 10013 since that made it show as 100.0 MHz in windows haha

Ya, I am updating the firmware for my Intel SSD now since the new one is out.....all the un-clean power downs required for benching make me dam skittish since that is the best way to make the drive think it is 8MB haha

Also got my backup image for safety though of course

    Hey guys,
New on this site.. I NEED HELP MAN.. MAJOR.. NEED ADVICE im in the Dilemma of epic proportions
Im gonna be buying an alienware m18x and i was all set to go with the AMD configuration cos of reviews and benchmarks i seen online then i saw something about batman arkham city coming out in stereoscopic 3d .. and i read somewhere that amd 3d support aint as good as nvidia's so.. im left with a difficult choice based on budget constrictions.. here are my choices below.. Somebody Help..

This is option 1.. intel i7 extreme processor 2920 overclocked to 4.0ghz with AMD 6990 Radeon Card in Crossfire in the ALIENWARE m18x

    OR

Option 2 intel i7 processor 2820 with dual nvidia 580m in SLI IN THE ALIENWARE m18x

I was convinced on the AMD configuration but due to recent stories on how arkham city and new games will be running stereoscopic 3d games.. now im baffled.. any tips to help me ?

The M18x does not do 3D due to the lack of a 120Hz screen.....I would get an M17x R3 with the 3D screen and GTX 580m if I were you.

This is also really not the right thread to ask this.

I've posted a Crysis bench at least once before, maybe a couple of times. I'm averaging around 64 FPS and BDRacing is averaging around 123 FPS. BDRacing has posted a number of Crysis benchmarks also. We were posting these 3 to 4 weeks ago.

    Edit: found the posts...

Yep, you are right, no clue....that is why benches should have gpu-z, cpu-z and the bench program in the screenshot....so we can actually make sense of it....

I normally run default benchmark settings and since Crysis does not have any defaults, I normally run on Very High and native display resolution. The nice thing about the Crysis demo is that all of the settings selected display in the results so there is no question about the software settings. Neither of us posted screenshots at the time and I almost always do for the reasons scook9 pointed out. I must have just been lazy at the time, as it was pretty late at night. I think I did place a post with Very High settings, but did not find it this morning. I know I dropped down to High settings at least once to compare to the setting BDRacing was running and it didn't net but around 5 FPS more than Very High.

On Very High settings and native display resolution, I get 58-60 FPS average regardless of clock speeds on my GPUs. Cranking up the GPU clocks does not seem to have a huge effect in Crysis on my system. I think the software is so resource intensive that it just gobbles up most anything you feed it and converts it to eye candy. What's odd is that I usually get a couple extra FPS with 2XAA turned on than I do no AA in Crysis, and the 2XAA stops flickering for me. My R2 also ran a few extra FPS faster with 2XAA than it did with no AA.

After my replacement GPUs arrive I will run a Crysis benchmark again with GPU-Z and CPU-Z screen shots in the post. Gotta run for now... about to board a flight.

    LOL

Well this is what I remember...

Stock Dell drivers right out of the box, installed the Hyper X ram and took the plastic off the front grills.

Nothing loaded on the machine at that time other then Trixx and a few benchmark programs.

Ran the Crysis bench on high settings with screen res as shown.

    GPU's clock 860 1155.... I've been blessed with a nice pair of GPU's.

    CPU Clock at 4.5 Ghz, maybe a little more, using 45 45 45 45 25 80 56 99 bus 104.80 with flex support disabled.

    Laptop cooler and a 15.5 C room.

With Crysis, The harder I pushed the CPU the higher the score went....

My cards want more CPU then I can give them.

I had no idea what I was doing so again I want to thank Mr Fox for coaching me...

And I know Speedy and I think Stevie were around back then.

No games here.... legit runs..... with AC.

Looking at my notes now and this vantage run was
    GPU 855 1155
    CPU 45 45 45 45 25 80 56 99 Bus 100.19 with flex support disabled.

Scook, would it have anything to do with the fact that 06 is older and probably used primarily a single thread allowing for mor turbo? Also I noticed from testing way back, that the CPU usage during graphics tests flucuates up and down, so it probably never hit the turbo time limit. Obviously it used more than one core, but my guess is it did so in a manner that really favors the SB tech.

Found it: Copy and paste from an old test run. The CPU doesn't appear to be stressed to much. These are from testing several bios' for the R2, but the Argus Monitor graph shows core activity. When not stressed all cores would operate at a higher freq that when stressed. Perhaps that is what helps with the 06 score on the SB platform.

Ya that is most likely it. I know back when I had my GTX 280m's in my M17x R1 that the graphics scores were much higher if I limited the CPU to 2 cores vs all 4. Perhaps SB is boosting just 2 cores vs all 4 to get higher speeds since it somehow is sensing that that is all the program needs?

ah... Johnksss you switched to the dark side. I actually can't see the picture, what's the score?

I was actually looking for some advice, and I remember that you helped me when I first got my D901C. I'm caught between the M18x and the Clevo x7200. I can't afford the 2920xm and would probably have to stick with the 2720qm if I went the M18x route or the 960 on the Clevo. Regardless I'll be getting 6990's CF. I just want to know which one you think can be pushed to perform better given those specs.

nope. it maxes out at 84 watts

3dmark06 was a better dual core on gpu test and quad core on cpu test...but sandy seems to have found some good ground on the test.

you can run the m18x and grab an es (300) off ebay..that's what i did. but you will need to get a dual heat pipe heat sink.

you can run the 7200 and grab the 980x from anywhere between 600 to 1000 bucks but not sure if you would need a second psu though. not sure about battery life either. and haven't seen any benching with the 6990M's yet.

i went with aw this go round...since i had the d901c the first time.

Interesting, how much do the dual heat pipe sinks run? I might go the AW route this time as well. The processor in the 7200 seems to be a bit outdated.

The 990x is still superior in applications that use all the cores of the i7 970/990x. Honestly, I was looking into the x7200 as well.

    m18x

    Pros:
    18.4" Screen
    Dell NBD Warranty
    Backlit Keyboard
    4-5 hr Battery Life
    Xfire 6990s

    Cons:
    Hard to Disassemble
    2 HDD

    x7200

    Pros:
    17.3" Upgradeable screen
    6 core i7 Desktop/Xeon
    3 HDD
    Easy to Disassemble
Resellers Haggle with Sager for Warranty for you

    Cons:
    30 min Battery Life
485/580 sli only (confirm by resellers?)

Either laptop is a Flagship that is worthy of its name and the recognition it receives from NBR. Both machines are nearly identical in speed and the x7200 shows just how advanced it was when it came out. But as you would assume, the new SandyBridge mobile line up is quite impressive for gaming and etc. I would wait for the new x7200 in November with Sandy Bridge E. Though you will be using it with the same 6990/580 gpus that are in both the current x7200 and m18x.

Actually I've found a reseller offering 6990's in the 7200. I would prefer not to wait another 3-4 months for something with the same gpus.

    Very useful information though.
