That much I do know
.
Currently I'm trying to get my hand on an M18x 330W PSU. I have two 240W PSU's but I think getting a 330W would be easier. My plan is to take a 240w PSU, Find the ID code chip, and find somone to desolder it and resolder it on to the 330W PSU, after removing that chip. That would be the cleanest and easiest route I think.
Even so, my CPU scores will suffer compared to Sandy Bridge, so my overall scores will not come close, but it will definately be fun!
@John - Nice! -

So Johnksss,
Now that you've had time to totally brutalize your ES chip, benchmark wise, across the board, how would you say the 2920XM+BIOS OC compares to the 920/940XM with Throttlestop across the board with many benchmarks? -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Electrosoft, why keep your desktop at this point?
Just curious haha since your M18x could eat it for breakfast -
thanks!
thanks! and i cant wait to see you make that 330 psu work.
going to have to say....the 920 was allot of fun, but the 2920 has far more to offer with less watts. we get past that and this thing will soar on any cpu bench. and more so with single and dual core apps. (personal opinion only)
but in the end..both chips are worth their weight in gold.
-
Ehhh, John did alright with the 920xm
John is right, Sandy Bridge is a lot more efficient. The 920/940 are still beats though. In a way, more flexible than SB. Mostly because you can play with FSB, multiplier, and TDP. You can really fine tune then speed for benching to ride the edge of stability. SB is huge though. Can't wait to see Ivy bridge. -
electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
lol, because I'm going to throw a 580 or 590 in it and ride it out till ivy.
Or I could break it down, sell it for parts and use my M18x till Ivy and then rebuild from the ground up.
I figured John had totally ripped the 920xm top to bottom, and now that he's had a chance to put his foot in the 2920xm, it would be good to get some feedback since he goes the extra mile on his laptops.
-
That's a cool idea, looking forward to seeing the results. Should be an easy solder job when you can identify the chip.
@johnksss: Awesome scores, really great work!!! -
Yea its good because he has used both chips. John and i traded blows for a while with the 920xm. Check out Hardware news, Overclocking Competitions, Reviews and search 920xm. You can see our results. Pretty neat stuff.
-
thanks guys!
and as for the 920xm or the 5870.. i never ran them at negative zero temps.....now i wish i had..
right now im still just copper and ac but for the most part can keep up with just benching off the table as is.
and a good time was had between me and dr650se...we use to be up late night talking about what could and couldn't be done...lol and that goes for scook9 as well.
-
That was an awesome time. Once I get the internet and some time John, ill manage the temps, you can remote in and work some magic.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Got my waterblocks John, not sure when I will have time, but I will get that loop on the GPUs
You look lonely up there! -
for sure!
lol. not with all these world records in peoples tags i don't!
good deal. im sitting here now looking at my water blocks...wondering if i should try one ..lol i still have a water chiller. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Ya that chiller will be a problem for me. I was worrying about just that haha. Maybe I will stick my Res in a freezer.....or something
-
for testing....a bucket full of ice water...
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Touche!
I guess fans are not needed then....lol -
not in that test they wont be.

Hey you crazy OC brethren. According to HWinfo, My thermal diodes on my CF 6970s are 75 and 81. However TS1 (MemIO) are 90 and 91.5 respectively. This is running only a 800/1000 OC. Concerning? or am I OK? Obviously the temps overall are very low except for that part. Do your TS1 MemIO's get really hot?
-
Mine average about the same delta between thermal diodes/MemIO, so I think that's normal. When my GPUs get up into the high 90s, my MemIO is reading something crazy like 105C
-
Specs: i7 2720, CF 6970 m18x
Vantage (unable to run 3dmark11 due to .Net framework issues right now)
GPU: 24,154 CPU: 19971 (definitely limiting my score) of 22886.
GPU OC'd to 830/1100. Pretty good GPU score. Temps stayed in the 70s through vantage which was impressive. Get hotter during gaming on certain diodes. Wish I had a screenie but Vantage crashed upon wakeup as i was away from my computer.
I may upgrade the CPU and keep the OC'ed 6970s as they seem to OC really well without breaking a sweat and wait for the 7 series before upgrading. -
Nice benches john, I'd definately like to see that AM3 run. Bet it was flying! Also you need to get your CPU cold. You should be able to beat my 920XM score (wPrime1024=192sec) with that chip. over at T|I a guy ran a 186sec. Cool it down!
-
So how are the 6990s OC'ing? What clocks are you guys pushing with stock or not stock methods? Seems like the 6970's are pushing good and stable clocks around 830/1130 with no problem and is way more power than I need for any game ATM. Was going to upgrade but might wait to see the 28nm 7 series before upgrading. Any GPU score fo 24,500 in Vantage makes me think I should sit back count my blessings and realize I am gaming high level games on my freaking couch on a laptop...Crazy eh.
-
Yep man! That is crazy, I was playing metro 2033 and I was getting 60-70+ fps maxed out, that is really crazy eh.lol
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
John what measures are you currently taking to cool your stuff? Dice? SS? Just an AC?
I have some fair sized heatsinks attacked on top of the GPUs and CPU with a thermal pad providing some heat transmission and 6 GT AP-15's blowing into the open laptop. I just cant compete with those higher clocks
So far my limit has been 850 core
Wanted to hold off on the Watercooling as I am not sure how effective it would be at the moment and it will not be simple to do not that I have all the parts and have looked at it some more. -
Hey Dave, seems people are getting pretty high clocks with the 6990s, but I don't know if its worth it to upgrade. My 6970s were crap and I got an RMA so I took the free upgrade.
Clocks are running anywhere from about where you are 820/1100 to 850/1150 ... and some of us who are really pushing (john myself, others) are hitting 870/1170 and even a bit higher in benches. I can run stable without additional cooling at 860/1150 for gaming, or at least thats what I have been doing, haven't seen the need to try higher clocks for gaming. -
So how are the 6990m's looking in bad company 2 (max settings), any benchmarks yet? are these ready for some bf3 action
-
that was on dice, but the whole time i couldn't get past 80 watts.
this time i was using dice. you can try that...it's much easier than a water loop and it's a lot easier the way i was doing it. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I assume you are using dice pots and not just putting it on the cards haha like DR did.....
How much does DICE cost? And where to buy.....
So I am assuming those clocks are going to be hard to get without sub ambient cooling?
Also, HWInfo for fan control is a no no right? Causes instability? -
Wow those 6990s are definitely beasts. AMD really has given some good cards with good OC'ing. Fortunately, even in stock form, the cooling on the m18x is tops. I was hearing that the R2 (my old system) was showing better temps but I don't get it just looking at the cooling design of this. It seems to be better suited and the vents seem even more proper. What is your stock GPU score with the CF 6990 in Vantage? I can't run 3dmark so I want to see about how far off the 6970s are in stock form.

@Scook - Check out "Shoppers" if you have one close by. The one across the street from me sells dice at $1.09/lb Pretty good deal. It's located in a cooler by the entrance. Between the doors and the cash registers. At least here in my area. You can get like 10-15 lbs and that should last several hours of benching. If Shoppers doesn't have it, call up local Ice Cream shops. They may have some. Thats where I got mine in Ohio. Call ahead, and save yourself the trip. I'm notorious for just going and finding out my suspicions were wrong and have wasted time on a worthless trip
@John - haha nice! Hows that working out? be sure to watch for condensation. I unplug the fans when doing that sometimes. I have found if my CPU gets too cold, it will coldbug, but right before it cold bugs, the fan goes crazy. Plus if you have the CPU at a negative temp. The Fan is going to actually push ambient air on the heatsink, causing it to heat up a little bit.
@Dave - The newer AMD Cards definately run crazy cool in the R2. 6970's rarely broke 70*C in my system. -
no cold bug for this es so far... and under stress the chip will heat back up to about 30C

I hope that no one is thinking those are ICE CUBES lol.......
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
John is your M18x booting without the laptop keyboard installed? I added back the keyboard then the screen so I guess keyboard may just be getting in the way
Also, any tricks to handling DICE? (aside from the obvious - don't use bare skin) -
Room Temp: 24c
Bus @ 101.99
I'd like to lower my room temperature before I attempt a higher Bus clock.
Vantage:

Wprime:
-
that would be all bad if someone went and did that with ice cubes!
side note:
for the record....that dry ice helped the cpu, but as you can see...it still matches my gpu score which was done under a portable a/c unit.
we need more voltage. and i was looking at the card. and it can be volt modded...im just not about to be doing that...haha -
lol good that you clarify that, it does look like regular ice
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Most cards can be volt-modded if you are brave enough.
Considering that I lack a portable AC, I will just skip to DICE for my GPUs I think haha
Now....DICE should be easier to find than a dam HP TouchPad......lol -
what clarification? if someone is silly enough to put ice cubes on there then they need to quit benching all together!
hey, can you run wprime once again, but snap a picture just like this. i want to see what the real multiplier is under load. because depending on temps...mine will run 35 up to 39. thanks.
-
albertsons has it... try a store that cuts meat or fish...they usually keep dry ice.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Not many Alberstons on the East coast haha, I will see what I can find though
-
Shoppers!
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Just checked and I will drive right by one going home
-
i had to install the keyboard the first go round, but i also added the usb keyboard as well...then after that..it worked without the keyboard.
-
I was kidding! I wouldn't even attempt to apply extra cooling at all.... most people won't, you're hardcore man
I can do that, as soon as I'm back (tonight) -
cool deal
i had to look back at your numbers. those are some damn good numbers for the 580m in the m18x -
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
on Cali I just to get it from the ice cream man on the street for free
-
hahaha
when i was doing dice regularly...i would go to melody ice cream and get it. super cheap. albertsons is rather high, but they are also open late...the ice cream shop closes at 2 pm
