When that happens I keep raising the watts and when it don't work i raise the amps and start again. Mine does what you said too.

i concur. this thing is a "beast" in battery mode. blowing past allot of other notebooks/laptops & netbooks. hell..you can game using "one" gpu and still breeze past the competition.

    it's different with oem speedy.
the oem just jumps to 90 to 99 watts with in a few seconds...highest i get is a max 0f 90W on a very very good day.and that's over time.

    not really. 300 vs 1000
and that is only noticed during benching. with better than normal usage. it still far exceeds those expectations. and i would rather have this over anything paid for above a 2630qm... :).(oem 2920xm/2960xm) excluded.

now with that being said...im upgrading any old ways...lol

    side note:
    2.4 vs 2.5
    more watts apparently
far higher voltage. (1.5 by residualvoltage and 1.45 by scook9 and 1.46 by da_g)
    we cant get past 1.351

I just downloaded this today to compare to someone over in the 580 vs 6990 thread ... and because I was bored :p Its pretty to watch the first dozen times or so :p

I highly recommend watching GPU temps (especially memIO) when running these tests. I used a relatively mild OC and it hit 94 which is the highest it has even gotten. Just a heads up for whatever it's worth.

lol no I have for sure bud. I documented and researched its behavior on battery with Unclewebb at T|I. When overclocked much higher than probably level 1 preset overlock the cpu throttles on battery. Throttle Stop easily fixes this and stops it. but if you leave to high an overclock the system will shutdown since you can't draw full power from the battery... That is with both gpus on at the time with ulps off. Either way they are fast and on battery if set within reason and paired with Throttle Stop you can game on no prob. I asked him to implement more readings in his log function... IE vid, watts, and battery draw. I had a log showing 140~ watts on battery might of been higher and was on verge of shutoff. That was on Intel burn for a test... no one in right mind would run that on battery anyway... Oh wait I did lol I must not be Sane lol.

Guys I discovered something about flex and I think I am the first... So I will share... I am including it in a guide but haven't had time to post it so I'll let you all know directly. 25flex+ is required to stay stable in 5ghz range with more than just a quick Cpuz validation lol. So here is the scoop I have found out how to go to up to as high as 99flex. That's how I have a pic showing 1.5vid. 1.49~ is 25 flex. Here it is if I didn't discover this first my mistake. Go into bios the unlocked one from Ahmed. So the top tabs say 4-5 headings from left to right is the first tab showing info, the second houses the HD options and performance etc even virtualization etc. Next tab shows the wireless cards. One more over is a info tab again. Then you get to a tab that has advanced options. You should see ICC at the bottom. Don't enter ICC it freezes the bios and requires a power off to fix. Right above that option is a performance selection. Enter that and you will see memory profile, overlock enable or disable and flex vid. By appearance it seems its the same menu on the second tab from left to right housing the overclock and flex and memory profiles... Its not the same. On the normal menu 25flex is the limit. On the menu I pointed you too we can set up to 99flex. I have determined the volts actually register and work. Open Hwinfo and click showall in system tray. Now you dont need the summary window you need the main one. Click the + next to the processor and you will see the current voltage set... Which after 1.5 doesn't show correctly... But also a listing saying extra overclock voltage and you will see the reading. 25flex is .098V and 99 I think was .2~volts. So have fun with this new info. Speedy PM'd me trying to get over 43x and we noted John's cpu didn't go over 80watts. So I tested last night and I barely go over 99watts unless I am overheating or had added a lot of voltage. So voltage could be the reason limiting watts since a higher overclock than 1.3511 will allow when voltage is added max speed is higher but more crappy heat, but will start using more watts. So John your cpu may not be limited but instead you have just been running it more optimally than us. What's your thoughts guys? Am I do any kudos or is this old news?

Notice Johnkss that in the pic of 5ghz 8threads @ 100% throttle stop shows 85watt... see unless overheating or extreme loads (intel processor id is a light load on all8threads compared to intel burn linx or prime95) So i really think your chip isn't having a prob if you only see up 99watts.

exactly I had same temps on stock speeds with stock paste. They were around 70c after ICD 24 repasting on vram too (replaced pads with paste). Then i only see 90c on vram in furmark and thats with a 1100-1210mhz vram overclock. Games seem to stay in spec after repaste even with rather high vram overclock.
So definately watch out... vram overclock can destroy a card much faster than a core overclock.

notice in the pic it shows 1.5V

    side note:
where do you get 99W at?
i think i hit 90W like 1 time and that's still only 1.351V over a period of like 5 minutes.
see where i beat you here in wprime 1024. the over clock is 46x/1.351V/81-83 watts. the pic before this one is posted higher in this thread showing what the watts are.

Yup I see that. Correct John. Not sure why you are limited still. Either way i hope all of you see that we can go over 25flex now... that was mostly my main point. I got a lot of work to beat that wprime... only got 169~ last night... i'll have to use higher speeds... that was at 4.56Ghz... strangely enough mine was running around 102watts on my wprime run for that but i'm pretty sure you've been keeping yours so much cooler than mine are you using dice or ac or an airconditioned room? I still think the watts dont go that high unless the chip is over heating... my benches go to a peak of 100c in the least on those kinds of wprime runs so i'm still unsure if ES can't go over 90watt or if your just keeping it so much cooler than us. Seems your ES chips really are locked under 90watts. Still i hope someone benefits from the use of 26-99 flex now. HWinfo and Throttlestop don't report over 1.52volts ish but the "overclock extra voltage" shown in hwinfo shows it correctly from 0flex all the way to 99flex. With the limited watts you jhave me puzzled for sure.

okay cool. yeah I think after all our discussions up until here I am feeling the same way. perplexed, vexxed etc. Like you say either way for a super awesome price you got a beast of a chip and for less than 1/3 price of an OEM. I'm going to try tonight to geive you some competition on that wprime since no one else has stepped up on the wprime1024m. Good luck with your future work on the ES it was one great buy for sure. Looking forward to your next benches... though we are both nearing the limits we can get to already. Cheers John you've got some incredible Benches! It deserves much respect. :)

BTW lol you did a half bench lol

Which settings are you talking about can you give a pic or point to what post?

i'll keep looking for your reply here and there.

Also can you post what specific settings you had to edit and flash to fix the hold up? I'm sure other ES users would be very appreciative.

Oh that is simple... in the bios I did that it didn't require modding for it. 0 time limit means it uses whatever the fused limit is... could be 28secs. So technically you probably thought i disabled the time limit... not really just appears that way. Just set 0secs and it equals fused limit probably the 28secs thats set when you enter the bios. But 1 second would litterally mean just that. Also depending on the bench and also the difference between what you set for short watt limit and long watt limit you can see as much as double that time limit... its weird. intel burn sticks close to the limit set but i've had wprime nearly go double the time limit before going to the long term watt limits.

i don't get it. stock 6970 is beating the 6990 in heaven benchmark?

    my stock heaven benchmark;

even with 825 core i cannot even match your score.....

i am wondering if it's immature drivers holding back the 6990m? maybe you can post a benchmark of original crysis?

please only use the in-game 32bit version benchmark gpu batch file and not 3rd party program. first run the game in 32bit mode and ensure all are very high spec and no AA. the 64bit version runs the game slower for some reason so just stick with 32bit.

here is mine with 825 core / 1000 mem on the gpu clocks but with stock 2720qm cpu.

No, I think it was just one of those lucky days that I had a great benchmark score. All conditions were just perfect at the time. I was running a driver-only installation without CCC and registry was hacked to force CFX to be permanently enabled, no PowerPlay throttling capabilities, etc. I was also using RadeonPro to disable all AMD "features" that slow things down. I no longer have that set of 6970s in my system and the cards I have right now are defective.

I ran another Heaven benchmark today after I posted my previous best and I cannot get a score that high even overclocked with my current 6970s. See attached for today's benchmark with 805/1075 clocks. (If I go higher than this with the current 6970s my system locks up and throws a BSOD in Heaven benchmark.) The attached Crysis benchmark was run on 08/12/2011 at stock clock speeds with the same set of 6970s that produced the higher Heaven benchmark score that you were commenting about.

can you post the 32bit behcnmark gpu batch file with your current set of 6790;s at stock clocks and then one run at your overclocks? i am trying to see how much faster the 6990m is in a real game like crysis.

the benchmark batch file you used was the 64bit version. that version runs slow for some reason. i got about 15% better fps than you but that is with about a 15% gpu overclock so it makes sense.

i would be very curious to see what you get with the 32bit batch file. i assume you did not mess with registry or catalyst.

umm, no you didn't... :D.. i think your seeing things.. :D

and that is 32 bit on all runs.

and the last one is with 8xAA/Full AF plus full motion blur/ plus use application settings/ catalyst Ai high quality.
your run has none of that applied. and you can see my ccc settings right in the picture. along with forced motion blur which everyone tries to turn off for more fps in the bench. :)

go match that run and see what you come back with.
