I thought so too. I just can't get past the back up part. Doesn't GPU-Z do the same thing?

From what I read, although you can use gpu-z to dump vbios, its not the most reliable way to dump it...and lets face it, with $1200 per card, you wanna be sure its backed up properly, right?
-
skygunner27 A Genuine Child of Zion
That's true. Maybe I'll ask 0x29A or johnksss to write a quick quide for dummies......

My instict tells me that its a simple process, very similar to using Batboy's guide to create a bootable USB drive and then putting the NVFlash files onto it and booting from it and backing up vbios firstly by doing the following:
That should be your orginial vbios backed up.
Then, put the vbios of your choice from widezu (reference to his .zip files on the bottom of his post) onto the same drive (or recreate a seperate drive if you like using the same steps to create a bootable usb and stash your usb with your original vbios away for safe-keeping) and boot from USB again and follow his instructions to flash the new vbios of choice, which were as follows:
Again, thats just my immediate interpretation of this as I only just read the thread earlier.....deffo get confirmation beforehand buddy! -
Foxie ... did you have 6970s or 6990s ???
Here is my Stock GPU Stock CPU (2920es no OC) 3dmark11 with TESS ON
AMD Radeon HD 6970M / 6990M video card benchmark result - Genuine Intel(R) CPU 0 @ 2.40GHz,Alienware M18xR1 score: P6304 3DMarks

AMD Radeon HD 6970M / 6990M video card benchmark result - Genuine Intel(R) CPU 0 @ 2.40GHz,Alienware M18xR1 score: P6907 3DMarks -
So I have a question and I hope someone can help me out. I ran 3DMark Vantage and 11 on my M18x. I get 24262 in Vantage and 6568 in 11. I just run the basic vanilla benchmarks without any changes. My 2960XM CPU is running OC'd at Level 1 in the BIOS. If I turn it up to Level 2 I start to get chkdsk operations at boot on occasion with some minor errors. Those go away if I scale my OC back to Level 1. My question is are those reasonable scores for my M18x and what do I need to change to stabilize my machine on Level 2. I have done light overclocking over the years with voltage changes etc., but I am certainly no expert. Thanks for any help!
-
@shaden - first M18x had 6970, second M18x had 6990. I have throttling with the 580M SLI, but that is expected. The throttling issue only fixed with a modded vBIOS and I have not installed that. The scores I posted this morning are under throttled conditions (GPU clocks dropping down to 475Mhz from the stock 620Mhz max) which I think is impressive.
@lqm - yes, those are great scores you've got there... looks like your system works well. I cannot answer the other part of your question because I do not have an XM CPU. -
SO was your 5770 3d11 with the 6970s then ?
-
Probably so. Here is a run with the 6970 @ stock clock speeds and a score of P5774 and here is a run with 6990 @ stock clock speeds and a score of P6955.
My response to John the other day was a mistake... (my bad for not checking the date)
Looking at the date of the 5774 benchmark score, this was for sure on 6970 CrossFire because the second M18x with 6990's had not been delivered yet. -
yea looks like that 6990 is about right at stock with Tess off ... so probably, didn't realise there was such a difference between 6970 and 6990.
-
Yes, there was a noticeable difference between the 6970 and 6990 in benchmarks. Not so much in gaming.

I agree with this statement. Sometimes the 6970M's outperform the 6990M's. http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.htmlMr. Fox said: ↑Yes, there was a noticeable difference between the 6970 and 6990 in benchmarks. Not so much in gaming.Click to expand... -
NBcheck is the poor place for professional reviews. They don't even update their tests with new drivers. They are mix matching bench numbers from various drivers without citing them specifically.
It is not possible, other than for margin of error, for the 6990M to be slower than a 6970M, as the 6970M is after the same 6870 desktop chip with 160 SPs disabled. -
skygunner27 A Genuine Child of Zion
At one time I've also had 2 M18x's, one with 6970M CF & one 6990M CF. Believe it or not the 6970M CF outperforms the 6990M CF here & there. I've seen it. Call it bad drivers, fate or whatever you want. As soon as I witnessed this in my own home with my own 2 eyes, I immediately contacted all my friends here on NBR/Steam/Origin/Real Life and shared my dissappointment with 6990M CF compared to in-game 6970M CF performance. When some 6970M CF users say that they wish they waited, I lol'd....and say...you have no idea how good your cards are compared to 6990M CF Real Life performance outside of benchmarks. AMD has come a long way with drivers for the 6970M CF. I can't say the same for the 6990M CF. I'm sure a lot of 6990M CF owners would agree.
I guess in the end for me it really doesn't matter. I'm just giving my 2 cents. -
In that case its not drivers then, something else, like the vBIOS (can make big difference how a card behaves), because there is nothing specific for 6970M or 6990Ms. One driver fits all for a certain family. SPs are unified and scalable without outside specific software and will automatically scale for a certain family driver. In this case the 'Barts' family of AMD chips (6870/6850 desktop and 6970M/6990M). This was the main selling point of Unified shaders and the whole move in the industry when they went DX10 and beyond.
Its common assumption that there is a different driver for 6970M and 6990Ms or in the case of 6870s or 6850 on the desktops. That is not the case
ASUS had to release a new vBIOS just to make catalysts beyond version 10.1 stable and work fine with their G73JHs. Its because drivers beyond 10.1 had specific changes that needed vBIOS support. So as you can see if a vBIOS isn't well written, a family of cards can suddenly show unexpected performance differences. -
That makes perfect sense, mharidas.

I know that their the same driver. I just worded it incorrectly. I'm sure you have a better understanding about how that stuff works, all I have to go on is Real in-game performance. The 6970M is really an awesome card. The 6990M CF is just a slight upgrade to an already great set of cards.mharidas said: ↑In that case its not drivers then, something else, like the vBIOS (can make big difference how a card behaves), because there is nothing specific for 6970M or 6990Ms. One driver fits all for a certain family. I remember the vBIOS problem on the G73JH. I was fortunate to never have encountered that problem with my G73JH. Instead I had a tempermental touchpad. -
I don't doubt your findings at all, I take them for granted. So you can rest assured you haven't worded your post incorrectly.skygunner27 said: ↑I know that their the same driver. I was sooooo unhappy with the little to no increase in game performance from the 6970M CF to 6990M CF. At first I assumed something was wrong until I compared my temps and benchmarks to other members and found that my scores were a little better than average. Then websites started posting similar results. AMD needs to hire some fresh hands to help out with driver development.

annnnd on the topic of 6990 Benches ...
Some new stuff tonight. Thursday is bench night ... only time I have free actually.
So I played with the es chip tonight, got it rollin at 44x 100 blck ...
29.3K gpu on vantage ...
with only a 26.2K cpu ... If I could actually get a solid cpu score ... I'd be crushin it out ... still pretty happy considering its an es chip.
AMD Radeon HD 6970M / 6990M video card benchmark result - Genuine Intel(R) CPU 0 @ 2.40GHz,Alienware M18xR1 score: P28481 3DMarks
Thats @ 880 / 1200 Core/mem clocks ... kinda sick

and cpu is throttling because of temps. -
Crysis Benchmark does quite well with the 580M SLI. No throttling noted and no mods implemented... held stock clock speeds throughout DX9 and DX10 runs. Also nice that flickering issues are totally non-existent.

Yup...
until you experience it, it's just all someone else's words. Even when you fully trust the words are accurate, seeing is believing.

Just my luck, 580s have to be on backorder
I got my heatsinks today though! So cable + heatsinks here, no cards...sigh. Nice results Mr. Fox., when did you receive your 580s?
-
Hey hey ..
I can't seem to understand why its throttleing due to temps ... max temp on these runs is 88 C .... CPU isn't set to throttle until 90 C ....
Any idea ?
Its messing with me man ! !! -
Maybe the app that's reporting those temps has a margin of error close to 2C degrees or more.
-
do this real quick.
set throttle stop to logging.
do a cpu test run on vantage only.
the check to see the real temps and if it's falling out of the 44x multiplier. -
Aeight will put on logging ... ... will say this ...
@ 44x I could run wprime 1024 for a full minute temps maxing at 87 and without it dropping out of 44x ...
I didn't go beyond the minute as I figured it was enough ...
going to reboot and put back on the OC and run with logging ... got so frustrated I shut it down
brb
-
vantage cpu takes more voltage though.

Score on CPU tests 25645 ....
-
and what was your score?
edit: i see it now.
what is the bclk at? -
100 even
although I would rather figure out 44x first ... I also have to say I tried a million permutations of flex at 45x ... 26-35 the multiplier drops to 44 or 43 or 42 depending how high it goes ... 20-10 it bsods ... fast and fast in wprimes the lower it goes ... the 20-25 range ... @ 23 flex 45x it can complete 60 seconds of wprime ... but it freezes on vantage ... but you just said thats because vantage requires more voltage....
I havce been at this for 6 hours today
-
this is the a03 unlocked bios right?
-
yup yup it is ....
-
what do you have set under the power menu for cpu options...down by the primary plane?

No "tweaks" - stock CPU and GPU clocks and latest Dell vBIOS - no throttle issues

some of those screen shots have lots of jagged lines.
-
Looks like that bsods .... its close though .... boots to windows desktop then bsods either ooo3b error or ooo124
-
124 is qtt or flex voltage or temps during booting.
see if it will boot four cores at that. -
Ok ... can try to restrict to 4 cores ... got it to boot on 8 cores same settings but 103.5 Bclk
should I roll wprime and throttle to see how it goes ? -
That is probably because I left everything at the benchmark installation defaults so there could be a point of reference. Nothing in the summary screen gives details on the settings. I am sure I could change some settings for the NVIDIA eye-candy.johnksss said: ↑some of those screen shots have lots of jagged lines.

was that score for the last runs posted up top?

The first screen shot is the score. It shows the average framerate and a letter "S" as the score. I just edited the post with the settings and "score" information. I will run again with enhanced settings and post a couple of screen shots if the visual quality significantly improves. The game is a bit older, so we will see how it looks with AA and Motion Blur. (There are not many settings available in the menu.)johnksss said: ↑was that score for the last runs posted up top?Click to expand...
Edit: OK - see the previous post for an update
