    Hello Mr. Fox
Now I have downloaded the new 3dmark Package. Tested the new test skywalker. Then I saw again my computer used much more electricity during the test. On my watt meter used my Alienware 17 up over 248 watts. (Completed test) Strangely my computer only uses about 225watt under firestrike. What I saw during consumption (details) of the test was over 88,5watt while under test in firestrike consumption is about 81watt. I think I use up and destroy my Power supply (240 watts). I do not think this is good for the power supply and my computer and use more watts than the intended. It is strange att this new test uses more power than the test with firestrike. You may want to recheck this also. I also got a lower score on physics skywalker than firestrike (10790 p) WEIRD. Can you give me some feedback on this. I must have more power if I should use this test. What if I Loaded into a modified VBIOS on the GPU, what will my computer and use of more watts, when I already use the 248watt with a little overclocking my gpu with a standard VBIOS?

How the hell should it go with MSI's laptops under the new test skywalker. Their power manage the only 180watt. With their turbo boost technology destroyed the battery for a short while. Their machines comes the only and charge and discharge the battery and do not give enough power to the computer for a while. :chatterbox:
This is my final score with firestrike. Over 5700 p with +78/250 (849/1450) with standard VBIOS on GPU. What can I expect if I get and modify the VBIOS and use the same clock speed? Is this a decent score with the ugly VBIOS to the graphics card View attachment 113149

That is probably about what it should be with a stock 780M vBIOS. You will get better results with a modded vBIOS. It may draw more power because the vBIOS mod fixes the throttling problems, but it probably will not be a huge increase in power draw. Here are some examples you can look at.

Then could I expect maybe a score of 6600-6900p under firestrike. What overclock and voltage on gpu can I use to play game with? I still need a more powerful power supply if I use a different VBIOS for gpu.

What is your opinion about this?
It's totally weird that my machine used over 248w under skywalker test. Then I saw again my computer used much more electricity during the test. Unless you are getting low FPS in games and need more GPU power I would not recommend GPU overclocking for gaming. If you need it, I would try to stay around 950MHz with stock voltage for gaming.

Fire Strike is really not that demanding. 3DMark11 and Vantage are more demanding benchmarks. Sky Diver seems to be a good benchmark and the fact that it is drawing more power than Fire Strike suggests it is taxing your system more. The physics test seems to be more intense to me than Fire Strike's physics test. The 240W and 330W AC adapters output more than what they are rated. If you had exceeded the capacity of the AC adapter, it would trip the internal breaker and cause it to shut off. I don't know that you are causing any damage to it by pulling 248W or more. But, even if it is not you would be better off using the 330W AC adapter for overclocked benching, IMHO.

If I decide that you say one overclocking at 950MHz and a standard voltage on GPU. What can I expect on overclocking the memory (about 1400)?

In most things cranking up the vRAM clock speeds yields very small gains compared to elevated core clock speeds.

Can you Alienware fans look at this link and tell me what you think. This is what I see for example about overclocking the gtx780m. This is a test from an MSI laptop with i7 4930mx and gtx780m. This shows what can be expected of overclocking this graphics card. This test is with a standard VBIOS. I think again one Overclock of the memory has a to say for gaming If one modifies the VBIOS on GPU

Hey guys! I'm hoping to become more of a regular around here. If for nothing else then the learning. I've been away due to a military deployment (returned in March) and getting settled as I had to move my family back to VA from OH and starting back to work. I've been tinkering with iPods a lot lately, just as a hobby fixing old ones and what not. Got a little into audiophile things. Just something to tinker with. Anyhow its great to see great people still doing great things. I wish I could join, but sadly I havn't had time for benching, or funds for it. Still rocking an old Clevo X7200 (which for somereason will not run with hyperthread :confused). But now that I'm back to work hopefully a regular schedule will allow me more time for here :D Glad to see the Alienware is still as powerful as ever! I miss my white 17xR2 from time to time :p I look forward to seeing and looking at older results.

Have any of you ever heard of a nVidia "icafe" driver? I hadn't heard of them before. From what I can see they seem to be made for people that game in Internet Cafes and things like that. I've seen a few people say that they are pretty good for various different reasons, so I thought I would install them and give them a go out of curiosity. They are international desktop drivers, so a modded inf is needed. I just grabbed the inf file from laptopvideo2go and installed these on my R2. They installed flawlessly. SLI enabled on the fly, plus no issues with the LCD brightness not working.

For what it's worth, I was finally able to break 16k GPU in 3DMark 11 with a 200/500 OC on stock voltage. (It's been driving me nuts that I would always top out at 15,9xx with all of the other drivers :D)

I have no idea how they are for gaming, (just ran 11 and Vantage) but for number chasing they may be of interest for some of you to try? If you are running a Windows 8.x variant, you will need to install these with Driver Signature Enforcement disabled.

    NVIDIA DRIVERS 337.90WHQL

The page is on nVidia's Chinese website, but the driver is in English.

Wow, that's interesting. Thank you. I will check those out for number chasing. +1 Rep

Edit 1: is the driver only in Chinese, or just the web page? This driver is not available on the US NVIDIA web site from what I can tell.

Edit 2: Found it also available on Guru3D Forums [ LINK ]

While I am editing the INF, I will include a tweak for 880M for the Alienware 18 and M18xR2 to see if it helps fix any of the 880M issues.

Just the webpage. The driver is in English. It has been a long time since I have tried to shoehorn a desktop driver onto one of my laptops. I was pleasantly surprised that things went so well.

FWIW, when I installed these, I manually extracted the driver first and made it a point to delete the iCafe folder (didn't want it), as well as the nView folder (don't need it) before the install. This driver extracted has a whole lot less "fluff" than compared to the notebook counterparts. I like that.

Are you trying to mod one of the existing inf files in the driver package to get it to install? The reason I ask is because I used the inf file from laptopvideo2go, and I was able to install these without issue on both my R2 and my G46vw.

I mod my own INF files. If they are not right you won't be able to install the driver because it won't see compatible hardware. So, that is not the problem. Interestingly, the INF that comes with the driver already includes strings for GTX 680M, 780M and 880M and modding is not required. I was able to install using the existing INF. The problem is 0x19 bad_pool_header STOP errors at the end of the driver installation process, which does not originate from the INF file. I did get them installed after several attempts. The driver is stable but it did not enhance performance. I ran two Fire Strike and two 3DMark11 runs with this iCafe driver and 340.43 and the scores are almost identical with either one. With each driver one of the two benchmark runs beat the other driver.

hey Mr. Fox, is there a place to dl the modded inf file? I might switch to 780m soon so that my hwinfo doesnt die on me when i switch it to manual fan control, and I am able to change brightness.

Darn. I was hoping your results would be better. While my R2 did show a tiny improvement in benchmark scores, my G46 showed no gain whatsoever.

I wonder what that 0x19 bad_pool_header STOP error is all about?

I run without a swap file, so I don't have more information to work with (no dump files are saved). I was able to install the driver over the top of my existing driver without a hitch, and without a modded INF. I only got the STOP error (3 attempts) after wiping out everything with DDU and <del>doing</del> attempting a squeaky-clean driver install. I deleted the iCafe folder so the installer may have been trying to perform some sort of illegal operation. The driver is really stable, so any NVIDIA users that are having instability issues may see some performance gains that we haven't.

Thank you. I may give it a try.

I have a Quick question, what would be a good stock Fire Strike result for stock 770m SLI in an Alineware 18 ?
Also when I ran the test I got a Little red tinted flicker on and off, driver issue ?

Incidently I got a "bad_pool_header STOP error" when I was downgrading my drivers a couple of nights ago from the lastest beta's. Not sure what to make of it. I wonder if its something to do with nvidia new secret fece sauce..?

Well, at least one user with 880M has found disabling Secure Boot has cured his horrible performance issues with 880M. Now that he is running Legacy in the BIOS his Alienware 17 880M overclocks like a beast. Check his results in the 880M review thread that Brother John has in the main Alienware forum.

Reminds me of what one of the Porsche engineers said..

"The ultimate race engine blows up as it crosses the finish line"

I did, but I flashed it back. It does not make a lot of difference really... actually no difference except in memory-specific benchmarks. I have achieved higher benchmarks at CL11 (those I posted today are examples). It worked excellent at CL10 for everything except Cinebench. For no explainable reason Cinebench always crashed with an error message with most CPU overclocks above 4.3GHz, but literally everything else worked flawlessly. Out of curiosity I flashed back my original CL11 Thaiphoon Burner profile and Cinebench never crashes now.

WHEN I LOOK IN TASK MANAGER I SEE THE HD AUDIO BACKGROUND PROCESS IS LISTED TWICE. IN DETAIL IN TASK MANAGER I SEE FOUR PCS OF HD AUDIO BACKGROUND PROCESS (RAVBg64.exe). IS IT SO IT SHOULD BE? LOOK AT THE PICTURES OF MY TASK MANAGER. EXPLAIN ME WHAT THIS IS. CAN YOU SEE IF THERE IS SOMETHING ELSE WEIRD IF MY TASK MANAGER?

View attachment 113431 These are new numbers on Cinebench 11.5 and Wprime 1024. Tests were run on my Alienware 17 with an ambient temperature of 22 degrees Celsius. Using only my modified CoolerMaster Notepal U3 (2x140mm and 1x80mm fans) Fans run on 12 volt pc power supply. Cpu running on my standard overclock 4x42. What do you think about the temperatur View attachment 113432 es and results of the test of Wprime 1024?

Everything is running stock with the new 14.6 RC2 driver, not sure why the CPUz and 3dmark show that i got the I7 4900mq at some point.

    Alienware 18 : Intel i7-4810MQ, Dual AMD R9 M290X CF 8GB, 16GB DDR3L 1600MHz, 1TB + 80G caching mSATA + Samsung 256GB SSD

Looks like the Dual R9 M290x CF got almost 100% higher score Vs the single R9 M290x GPU ! http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...-overclock-results-catalyst-14-6-drivers.html

Awesome! Thank you for posting your results.

When you get ready to do some official benchmarking with the requisite validation links and screen layouts, please post more in the http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...e-m18xr1-r2-18-benchmark-thread-part-3-a.html because we would love to see more. Look at the opening post for validation requirements if you would like to submit scores that qualify for the leader board. Stock results would be good, but it would be nice to see some examples of how the R9 M290X performance scales with overclocking as well. I am eager to see if it handles it better than 7970M has been able to. It would be very exciting to see AMD show up with a GPU that overclocks as well as NVIDIA.

CrossFire and SLI frequently deliver between 70 to 100% higher performance than a single GPU system, which is one of the reasons I love multi-GPU setups so much. The thought of ever going back to using a high performance system with only one GPU is not very appealing to me because the performance sacrifice is too great to appreciate. In fact, you can take two somewhat weak and comparatively inexpensive GPUs and put them in CrossFire or SLI and get better performance results than what is possible with just one much more powerful (and expensive) GPU.
