Yeah, the throttling was with the 580m's/18x at around 78c I think - from recollection.....and yeah - too much paste on the wrong components is gonna cause issues, just as much as too little. Maybe that's why it's better to use/buy the correct thermal pads and check for proper alignment with those components that require the additional cooling. I know when I was recently stripped down and installing my new cards, i checked for proper alignment, offered the card up to the heatsink before assembly.....best to do it right first time than have to open up the machine again, strip down, repaste, re-position pads etc.......

20c is quite a temp difference in an unrelated component, still though, think of it like an engine under a hood. If you wrap the exhaust manifold/header in "header wrap" it will cool the manifolds in comparison to an unwrapped manifold/header............the intake manifold will be cooler as well because there is less heat being released and trapped under the hood.

i do have my laptop proped up now so that wold make a difference lol

So, yesterday I needed to take my laptop to a meeting up in the city, and it was a pain in the (you know what).
Prospective owners: It's not the worst thing to carry around on its own, but it sure as hell isn't easy to carry around if you have books and other materials with you. The M18x is great if you have a desk wherever you're going. But if not, you might want to consider something more portable in addition to the M18x. Don't do what I did and sell every other PC you own expecting the M18x to take their place - performance wise it does, but not in portability.
When the next revisions come out in April or May, I might consider purchasing an M14x. -
thats why i got this. and yes the add is really over the top

Looks like that could help. The price is a little high though.

Nothing like the M11x for portability
I'm waiting for my Dicota Bacpac Move to arrive - if it fits, then I'll be extremely happy, it only cost me 20 euro. -
also i really wish i got my laptop in red -
-
yeah i ment too get red but forgot to put it in the order
so is there any news about the new nivida and amd gpu's eg will they work on my m18x r2 etc
so is there any news about the new nivida and amd gpu's eg will they work on my m18x r2 etc
also how do u add a siginture thing at the bottom like radi 324 -
i have no problem putting m18x on my lap, only worry about it's battery life and blocking cooling vent. -
-
I don't regret purchasing the M18x by any means, but it's not something I like to carry around with me every day. Something any person will probably consider when they purchase an 18" laptop. I'm not upset or anything, I'm just sharing my experience. I definitely recommend the M18x over any other laptop. However, I made a mistake and got rid of all my other laptops, so, don't get rid of all of your other PC's expecting the M18x to replace them. It will replace them all performance wise, but not in the portability department.

like I said it is all about what you are doing with it. -

I only break out my M18X for serious sessions like gaming. My Android tablet is perfect for everything else. I can surf the web, do presentations, even stream TV over from my Slingbox anywhere I need to. It only has a 10" screen, but it has HDMI out so I can hook it up just about anywhere there is a TV or projector. You can get one with a keyboard docking station that extends the battery to almost 14hours. I RDP into my desktop when I run into a situation that requires it, which is almost never.
You have to remember that the M18x is a desktop replacement, not a mobile computing device. I bought it because I want to be able to game at either my GF's, my buddies house for our LAN parties, or at home. I'm at the hospital as I type this with my GF and she is gaming on it too! If I'm at the Dr's office or something similar that you're only breaking it out for a short time, the tablet works wonders. When I fly, I'd never break out the Alien, it'd never fit in the seat with you, therefore it stays at home.
You may have been a little over zealous replacing all your machines with the Alien, though it can definitely replace any desktops you had. -

@J.Dre, do not get everki's bag. I own one and their design looks great, even better than alienware backpack but they are inferior quality, especially the straps. fitting things heavy like books and m18x ripped the straps in less than half a year, it was lame and much more expensive, not that much extra space too.
m18x orion bag is the way to go. -
and i can fit the laptop in the bag with cahrger(pair of headphones, mouse,)also ipad my camera(not small http://asset2.cbsistatic.com/cnwk.1...Cyber-shot_DSC-HX200V_35152783_02_610x459.jpg) couple books, clothes etc -

Time to turn to the dark side and give my R2 a big brother to look up to.
Finalising order for an m18x-R2 tomorrow, still deciding where i place the order (Dell UK or US reseller), but 3940xm, gtx 680m SLI, 32Gb and raid 0 SSD here i come ^^ -
I LOVE taking the M18x out in public, especially in a professional business setting. The gasps, wow-factor and intrigue it generates are priceless. It's big, but not anywhere near "too big" for my liking. The size is never more than a minor inconvenience that is more than offset by the pleasure I derive from owning it and traveling with it. Nobody has ever been anything but impressed by it, even in the stuffed-shirt environment I often find myself in.
Mac Books, Android tablets, Chrome Book? It is impolite to point and laugh, but sometimes it is difficult to avoid it... I just look the other way or look down at my feet and think of something else so I don't hurt their feelings -
Alien FX support in Office 10 would be sweet.
-
Mr Fox,
I think it's just personal taste and perspective. An individual can easily look at the m18x as a obnoxious monstrosity of a machine. It's barely portable and defies the term "laptop". They'd look at the elegance of a sleak and subtle macbook pro and admire the technology offered in a simple and pleasent form.
-------
Right now my m18x has been utterly butchered by depot and two techs. It's inoperable and I think I'd need scotty from star trek to work on it for a month. I took a video of the thing having a seizure and then shutting down. The tech actually made this machine so it's not level, the sides are bulgding out and the left touchpad button is down like the titanic while the right one is raised like satan's grasp from the depths of hell.
I believe that I have some special super power like anchronistic field or entropy. Yet my vostro 1400 and desktop I built work perfectly fine....puzzled
-
I generally find it's the unitiated that are most in awe of the M18 or even the M17, for most of us it's just a case of "meh" since we know what we're looking at.
That said, it is amusing to get questioned on it every time it makes a public appearance. -
No doubt Slim, nothing like answering questions about it with utter nonsense. I had someone ask me what it was made out of and I told them it was RAM and they said "I thought that was memory" and I said "No it's made out of Radar Absorbing Material" it's a stealth laptop. Should have seen the looks on their faces, priceless.
-
-
as for your m18x, they should just compensate you with a new machine, m18x R2 or something or give a full refund maybe. another example of crappy technicians, had one open up my computer once to replace keyboard and never again LOL. last time I had a tech out to replace for a keyboard bazel, when he arrived I asked him to watch me replace my own machine, I just needed the parts but Dell said they refuse to send parts, but would send out a tech for it. kinda dumb. -
-
-
Just based on presentation alone you can tell that alienware is like no other laptop brand. -
Getting very excited about getting my R2 parts! Fox i have ordered a complete Black case replacement,LCD etc from ebayus for R1 Motherboard and going to build another R1
-
yeah there not really rip off but you are paying extra for the flashing lights and looks which if your will to pay good for you also the clevo top of the line model is more powerful it has a desktop proceesor
Logical Blue One - Horize P370EM Clevo Gaming Laptop
(btw this the aussie sightand it is cheeper than the m18x and more powerful but it is also ulgy -
-
That laptop is only a 17.3" model so it doesn't have the same hardware specification which would of course increase the price.
I'd have to say based on my experience with the original xps laptop which had a desktop P4EE; it was a receipe for disaster. I still miss it, it was a solid machine that I loved the build quality and size but alas the desktop processor just made it expel so much heat that it was like being in the wash of a jet engine. Eventually that machine went nuclear, so desktop chips inside a laptop form factor are not something I want to deal with again.
You are definitely correct in that the machine is ugly.
-
lets not reject clevo/sagers btw. I love AW's design and looks, solid build, easy to understand warranty and 18 inch screen but if clevo has all these mentioned above excluding the look, I'd jump to clevo without 2nd thought. 18 inch, solid build and warranty are 3 main reasons I stay with AW.
with ivy EP coming up, same socket and should work with same chipset, why wouldn't I want a 10c/12c 20/24t server CPU? it'll blow these 4c/8t away. if cooling is a problem, disable 2-4 cores and it'll still have more fire power. please don't underestimate clevo, they are pretty hardcore, also the reason I want AW to push themselves for the better. matching external transfer to mac/apple level with better usb 3.0, esata 6G or thunderbolt, better cooling etc -
yeah from what i herd it handles the desktop cpu quite well(i had a clevo(m17x equivlent) it was a great machine well built(plastic not metal but still sturdy) and kept very cool but then i sold it a year ago and decided to an an m18xr2(the main reasons were because m18x looked cooler and had backlit keyboard(wasent confirmed on the 370 yet) in terms of warenty dell was a bloody night mare(with clevo(metabox reseller in australia) i rang up told them i had a couple dead pixels and i sent them my laptop and they replaced the screen and got it back in like 5 days it took me 4 months and countless hours on the phone before they would even come pic up my laptop(total system falure motherboard, ram video card all fryed) i orrigionally bought my laptop in may of last year i only got my replacement in november.
basically (since i like cars) this is how i would compare the 2 the alienware is a lamboghini avendator(cool, fast and expensive) while the clevo is the ultima gtr(ulgy, cheap but very fast)
in the end both are great computers if money is not an issue then the alienware is a good choice(also the clevo u can get a 95%gamut matte display(seriously i can see my screen with a light on in my room
) -
AW has solid build, better keyboard, bigger screen, msata, bigger body and metal chassis leads to manly domination over any other laptops, supports easy overclock and a decent bios, warranty, brighter backlit keyboard and pretty lights. -
The keyboard lights are the only ones I use, I shut everything else off. I could do without the flashing lights but I suppose that bling is part of what makes it distinctive.
I am not bashing anything, having owned a laptop with a desktop chipset in it I don't want to go down that road again.
I have no real preference when it comes to technology, whatever gets the job done. These things are just tools to be used to complete tasks.
Now I must dominate the world mercilessly, had that on my to do list for quite awhile. -
You go Brain..........remember to let Pinky help. -
just installed a samusng 840 120gb as my os drive. yeah now its o much faster

Along with my dear M18x r2, which I love, I own an iPad and a MacBook air. I have specific use for each device and I'm quite happy with what they can do for me. If I love my M18x I don't necessarily have to hate what's not an M18x, or rank everything else as a lesser and mediocre product. That would be like claiming that if a car is not a Ferrari it's not a "real" car. Or is it maybe the mentality of "us" vs. "the other" that seems (sadly) so widespread? Yes, there are products of great quality (like our beasts) and others in the same category that don't reach that level. Your M18x can do it all for you and that's great! Yet, the fact that you obviously don't like Apple products or tablets in general doesn't necessarily make them mediocre products. It's all about: what a device can do for you, your working habits, and your needs. As you said, and I agree with you, it all comes down to personal taste and perspective. -
I'm so sad. I'm korean, I was bought m18xr2 with trackX mouse in NA and came back korea.
TrackX left button is not working properly and I request dell service to KR dell CS but denied because I was bought in NA. So, I order new TrackX mouseI love dell.
PS. please do allow available to Dell servce pruchase in NA to Korea. -
Turns out I won't be able to keep my precious M18x much longer.
Edit: Initiated a return. Thought it was passed the date, but it wasn't. -
