I gotta be honest, I still may get the M18x Orion and sell this one just for the extra space. I think I'll toss it on ebay and see if there are any takers. I've only used it about a half dozen times.

As promised (twice) here are some pictures showing how the M18x fits in my backpacks

The M18x Orion fits it with space to spare

The Original Orion (non TSA) can get the laptop in but no chance on zipping it shut.

My Mobile Edge Premium backpack takes it pretty well. Have to help the laptop in but will easily zip shut.

That actually looks like quite a good fit. Would you say it's sits comfortably around the top edges once the bag is zipped up? Much strain between the M18x corners and the backpack?

Tossing up between importing an M18x backpack or purchasing the M17x backpack locally (Australia). I don't intend to lug it around very often but I have a few overseas trips coming up shortly.

It's actually not that tight, to my surprise. Don't get me wrong, it is a bit tighter than I would like but there is clearance between the laptop and the top of the bag. It does hug the corners but it's not a big strain. I've brought it with me to work for two days now and it's still a comfy trip ... for a 12 lb laptop. :)

How much extra space does anyone have in the front compartment of the m18x orion. I'm willing to spend the ridiculous $120 if I can confirm being able to carry my m18x, psu power brick, external hard drive and one or two textbooks. Though not having room for an external 2 tb hard drive isn't that bad but having room for the textbooks would be important.

@JCrichton, in your pics, it appears you took off the rubberized grip on the m18x lid. How and why did you do that?

I have the Orion 18" case for my M18x. It is a very tight fit. There is no extra room in the laptop slot. I always put the microfiber sleeve on the laptop before putting it in the bag. But I am sure this defeats the checkpoint requirements of the laptop being visible when the bag is open. It is so tight, it will be a pain and slowdown when going through an airport checkpoint.

The point of the bag is to speed up airport security time....just completely unzip that compartment and butterfly the bag open

Agreed on unzipping and flopping it open. I thought they had to be able to see the laptop in the bag. The microfiber sleeve that I use is the one it was shipped in. They cannot see through the sleeve. Or maybe I misunderstand what they need to see? I would hate to carry the M18x in the bag without the sleeve as it is such a tight fit.

So I have not been able to find it anywhere else, but does anyone else sell the M18x bag? I noticed amazon and newegg have the 17 version, but I guess it may just be a matter of time before that bag shows up elsewhere. I'm having a hard time stomaching $120 bag.

Not sure when it will ship, but on the Mobile Edge site, there is a banner ad saying you can get 20% off your total order (Memorial day sale) so it'll knock the price down to 95.99...The coupon code is "MEM11"
Alienware Orion M18x Backpack (ScanFast - TSA Checkpoint Friendly) | Mobile Edge

On my last few trips, I just left my laptop in my sleeve and wasn't asked anything. I figure the scanners should be able to zap right through some neoprene.

I'm not able to add the orion 18x into my cart. I might try calling them up but I have a feeling that they aren't going to let you purchase the backpack yet. I high doubt they will let you use the 20% coupon as well.

Zombie, could you give us your opinion on things like padding, protection, functionality etc? That's another we can get in NZ but it's more costly than most.

    TIA.

The padding seems to be pretty good, has about 1/3inch dense padding on both sides of the laptop pocket adjustable velcro straps to give the computer a snug fit. it also comes with a removable insert with mesh zippered pockets for various gaming devises. with this insert and the computer in the backpack its a snug fit with very little to any room for things to move around. it then has a good size front pocket that would fit the power bar and have room to spare.

There is then 2 more small front pockets one with compartments for smaller things, with a pocket for an mp3 player/phone and an opening for headphones to come out of and other pockets for things like stationary, keys and money etc. the other just an empty pocket with about the dimensions of a cd case about 5 cd cases think. It also has 2 standard side pouches with a mesh pocket on the outside.

Every pocket has the same dense foam protecting it. The bottom and the back of the backpack are quite rigid.

If you have any other questions I will try to answer them the best I can.

Here's some pictures that hopefully help, I'd say that depending on the peripherals that you want to carry with your laptop it may be a tight squeeze, with the laptop and that insert in the bag there is a little room to spare to put in those zippered pockets on the insert. Enough for a mouse ect.

Man thanks for the pics, +rep!

Pity it seems such a tight fit. My Razer Megalodon headset comes in its own hard case and could be a problem getting it in there with the power brick and a laptop cooling pad by the sounds.

This still looks like the only option for a suitable backpack in NZ. The Everki is out of stock everywhere here until mid August. I have again registered a complaint with Dell about the lack of M18X Orion options in Australasia. They do know I'll be advertising Toshiba whilst lugging around my Alienware?! Daft...

I happen to have a compusa store near my house and wondered if I should go the route of buying CompUSA.com | GA-7306-06F00 | SwissGear GA-7306-06F00 Pegasus Computer Backpack and then using a laptop sleeve with the m18x in the laptop compartment outside the backpack's sleeve. This backpack looks and fells much sturdier than the m18x orion but obviously I haven't been able to physically check out the orion. Has anyone ever used a laptop sleeve outside of the specified built in sleeve in a backpack and had problems?

With the weight of this beast, I'm surprised there hasn't been much talk of roller bags. Does anyone know of any decent roller bags that work with the M18x? Roller backpacks would even be better, but any roller would be good.

I can verify that the Kensington Contour Roller does NOT work. It worked just fine with my M17x, but alas, not even close with my new monster.

Thing about roller bags is you'll transmit a fair amount of vibrations through the laptop I would think... wouldn't be my first pick anyway.

Would the M18x even fit outside the laptop sleeve? The M18x seems so big that I am having trouble finding anything which would fit it and a few other things (D-SLR bag and headphones hardcase).

    Keep any suggestions coming!

Could rattle any number of things loose. Think about a laptop riding on hard trolley wheels over cobbles, sidewalk lips, cracks etc, much more potential for damage than the odd knock or bang within a backpack.

everything is built secure though, ive never heard of anyone having a broken laptop because it was in their luggage using wheels.

id be more afraid of power surges, static and liquid spills.

Just because you haven't heard of it doesn't mean it's a good idea. It's also likely that most people wouldn't take the risk. It's the same thing as shaking the unit or bumping it against something by accident. There are still plenty of parts that can get damaged or jostled loose by an especially bad bump or even just the constant vibration.

They all fall under the same category of controlling the environment around the laptop. ;)

Well, not trying to sound harsh, but my question was whether anyone knew of any roller bags that fit, not whether or not it was a good idea. (Just trying to keep the thread on topic, here... sorry.)

Personally, I've had a dell M1710, M1730, and M17x, and all were in roller bags. None have had any issues from it... as far as I could tell, and besides... who cares. That's what the accidental damage warranty is for!

Don't get me wrong. I'm not disagreeing with you. Roller bags probably aren't the best thing for a laptop, but I take this thing EVERYWHERE, and I'd rather pay a bit extra for a good warranty and save my back and shoulders.
