    The matte or anti glare screen are on another line ;)

    3) Matte/Anti glare screen for all type 60Hz and 120Hz (And not a matte paper sticking to add !)

    According to the facts (ask AIKIMOX), behind the E2E glossy plastic cover there is a Matte screen / panel. So, the solution for Dellienware designers/ engineers is very easy: let the consumer / end user configure if she/he want it with the glossy plastic cover or not... the screen / panel will be the same!

    In another note: A korean lecturer ( he ask me not to mention his name for obvious reasons), who's also involved in some research with or for Samsung, was answering informally ( while dining at the hotel) to some questions of a group of scholars on the matter of the new tendency of manufacturers to 'dictatorially' impose the 1900 x 1080 screens even on people that need their so called "top of the line" laptops (Precision, M18x, HP's, etc.) for real work "on the road", he answered that there is a growing preassure (both internal and external) on screen / laptop manufacturers to bring back the 1920x1280... And, maybe, also further for a 18.4 factor.

    I do hope with all my heart and soul that this is true... and that it finally will bring the expected results... ;)

    Wow great info !! Thank you very much for this ray of hope about good screen futur.

    Concerning the matte screen, I don't want to say how they must do it, just what we want ;)

    ...also:
    Maybe, as (serious) end users, we must keep and increase our 'external' pressing on the screen / panel manufacturers to reconsider they unilateral pixel/resolution 'castration'... ;-)

    Absolutely !
    If the m18x had better screen resolution with matte 120Hz I would have already buy an m18x, but I still wait the m18x R2...

    Well sure, I also wait other things like the ability to switch between GPU and IGPU without having to reboot

    Just to clarify, the stock M18x panel is anti-glare but not matte. There's a difference. :)

    Also, if you cover a matte panel with plexi glass you destroy both the crispiness of the image and the whole matte effect. That would be the worst combo imaginable: reflections + fuzziness.

    And for those worried about dust and fingerprints, the panel behind the glass cover is easy cleaned with fibercloth. Been using it exposed for the past 3 months. Very happy with it.

    Every vidéo and picture i see of the m18x screen show me glare. Some people say that the keyboard light is reflecting in the screen.

    In the end I did not need a matte screen, but I need a screen without any glare, and I think that only a matte screen just to get there., no ?

    As always dear Aiki, you're totally right! Thanks for the clarification.
    Still, an 'original' anti-glare, even if not matte, is way better than the 'dictatorial' E2E glossiness... ;)

    It shows you glare because of the glass cover. Without it you there's virtually no glare but the sharpness remains the same. It's a win-win

    The glare isn't so bad in the right environment, but it is a shame that there aren't anti-glare/glossy options.

    I still like the 16:9 1920x1080 screen, since it's as tall as a 17" 16:10 panel at 9 inches, but wider. It's great for media use and gaming. However, I probably wouldn't have been as happy with a smaller 17.3".

    But I do agree there should still be 16:10 screens available on laptops, even if it's just higher end workstations and business models.

    Besides just the hardware, what AW really needs to fix is all the bugs. Between the Aero thing and various other annoyances like the AlienFX lights being on at startup, THEN shutting off once the software loads, wi-fi not connecting at startup (restart fixes it), and some really poor interaction between the AW inputs with IE9 and certain sites (including this one) that make inputting text a hassle (keyboard input cuts out every 15-20 characters, cursor randomly dissappears then reappears somewhere else in the text) causes me to be less satisfied with my purchase the more I try to use it.

    You do not understand, I know it's the glass that glows when I speak of the "screen" I mean the screen panel. I do not want to know how Dellienware does the job, I'm just saying I need a non-glare screen panel, and put an anti-glare screen behind a mirror is just incomprehensible.

    PS: Please forgive my intromision :eek: but, IMHO: I think that Aikimox understand you quite exactly... In a respectful way, it's always more appropiate to say "maybe I do not express my idea quite well..." (or something alike), instead of stating: "you do not understand..." ;)

    No this has never been sent a Dellienware, but there are people who come from Dellienware on this forum. ;)

    If that's the case, I strongly suggest that together, we create a document for Dell/Alienware asking them to include these features/fixes/improvements on their next M18X. Perhaps they could hear us if we get enough people to send the mails or something, I don't know.

    Online petition, anyone?

    It's a great idea, my English is too poor to write a mail that can be taken seriously, I willingly leave the task of writing a good ;)

    If you also have the right e-mail address where to send the letter, it would be great.

    I could copy the email address and the text of the mail in the first post of this thread.

    The problem of ship date in my opinion are not inherent to Dellienware, they are often the availability of equipment (GPU, CHASSIS, ...).

    I just have a doubt...

    Do we seriously NEED anything higher than 1920x1080 for an 18" monitor? To be completely honest, I believe anything higher than that, especially in such a small screen, is pointless, and would only increase production costs (e.g. Apple's retina display).

    Well, it appears you've never owned a 1200p RGB LED or you would have a different opinion and probably would not even ask that question. It took me several weeks to get used to the downgraded screen resolution moving from an M17x R2 to the M18x. And that was a 17" screen 16:10 aspect ratio. I can assure you, it was anything but pointless.

    Granted, if you've never owned one you cannot miss what you've never had. But, I'd love to have 1200p back again. There's a noticeable difference in image quality, not to mention how much more fits on a 1920x1200 screen... a lot more than 200 pixels would make you think.

    In all other aspects, the M18x is an M17x R2 killer, but not the screen. The 1080p resolution on the M18x is very good, but not excellent.

    Oh, you all just want the extra 120 pixels? Alright, that's fair enough :p

    For a second I though you'd want something like 2560x1600 in an 18" laptop LOL

    Actually it's only 120 pixels :D

    I would have liked 1920x1200 more when I had it, but very few other things use that resolution anyway so it was pointless to hang on to it. I mean if I bought 1200p monitors at home, my TV still can't do it, and when I go on the road and use someone elses TV or monitor it would likely only suport 1080.

    I like keeping the resolution/ratio constant in all my apps and games, and 1080p and 16x9 is much more prevalent.

    I must admit I've had a good chuckle at some suggestions in this thread. I do agree with a number, though.

    You can get 1080p on 13" displays, so why is 25x16 asking too much? (It would most likely be 2560x1440 anyway as that's 16:9)

    That said, I personally wouldn't want that res on a gaming laptop. It's simply too high. 2560x1440 on my desktop can bring tri 480 sli to it's knees in a handful of games. A laptop would go and cry in the corner. I'd much rather see RGB/+IPS 1080p panels.

    Not quite my firends:
    1920x1280 = 2457600p
    1900x1080 = 2052000p
    Difference = 405600p

    ;)

    Listen to Mr. FOX. All the professional (and semi-professional) applications can benefit from such a resolution. Your eyes and patient too.

    Most of the games will benefit too whn filling the screen... The GPUs have no problem with delivering it if the screen/display/panel can deliver it... 1900x1080 is an impossed resolution special for TV's and movies and related industries... So, when you need to edit such movies (or multichannel sounds, animations, etc.) there is no problems at all with 1200p... but there are a lot of problems when you edit with bigger pixels (as in 17.3" or 18.4" displays) with professional applications in CAD, in science (biology, medicine, physics, etc) or when editing pictures, movies, etc. and so on. You must give yourself the posibility to experiment with te two displays side-by-side (for a while...) to get your own fundamented opinion...

    The 'prevalence' of 1080p is an impossed form factor that ignore the needs and demands of the consumers.

    Just my 0.01 cent

    Realize this is all in good humor, I'm not taking this too seriously and I hope no one else does either. :D

    However, I meant 120 pixel vertical resolution, in other words 10% of a 1200p screen. 1080p is 10% less.

    And actually:
    1920x1200 = 2,304,000
    1920x1080 = 2,073,600
    230,400 pixels less, (or 10% of 1200p)

    Really it comes down to preference. If all things were equal, I would always pick the higher resolution. Meaning most TV's, most external LCD's, most laptops and most games all written for the proper FOV and use of the resolution. All things are not equal in my mind :)

    extra 120pxls of vertical resolution is a lot for software developers and even for general computing and gaming. It took me a while to adjust to the new standard and I'd happily go back in a flash. 1080 on a 18.4" screen is a joke. It could easily go a couple of notches up, IMHO.

    I already find the 1920 by 1080p resolution a bit small for my eyes. Anything more will make it really difficult to read text especially on forums.

    Plus resolutions of 2560 by 1600 or other modes will be difficult for even the fastest mobile GPUs we have today on a number of game titles. It will be a while before desktop systems consider such resolutions as standard gaming, let alone laptops.

    I couldn't agree more. The additional 120 pixels of vertical resolution adds a lot to the user experience in many ways. Even the most basic tasks are enhanced, such as how many lines of text in a document and how many rows in a spreadsheet are viewable without scrolling. People with vision problems can enlarge the text size as necessary or zoom in as Johnksss has mentioned.

    Anyone that has never owned an M17x R2 with the 1920x1200 RGB LED or an M1730 with the same resolution simply has no frame of reference. Without that, it is not really possible to appreciate the difference. More will fit on the screen and the image quality was better. The M18x screen is not horrible by any means; it's just not as good.

    Things like this can be posted on IdeaStorm, they'll have more chances of being considered imo.

    We already have very good feedback from the staff of Dell.

    They do not require any personal information to register on IdeaStorm.

    I went from a 16:10 17" to the 16:9 18.4" and I still say I like the 18.4" better, and that's for internet, gaming, multimedia, and content creation in design and engineering programs. However, I would NOT be happy with the 16:9 resolution in any smaller size. 17.3" might be kinda okay, but that's pushing it.

    Even though the switch from 1200 vertical pixels to 1080 vertical pixels changed, the screen got wider physically to 16 inches. It also stayed the same physical height at 9 inches.

    I think part of it has to do with what you usually have on the screen. Obviously those who got used to the 1200 pixels and made use of them with menu bars, toolbars, etc. etc. will be unhappy with 1080 pixels because the same window will have to be smaller to fit the same amount of vertical content. BUT for just about everything else, the 1080 might be better. I personally got tired of games and media content always being stretched vertically and having to manually resize things to watch in the proper 16:9 ratio, or worse, use a lower resolution version when resizing wasn't possible.

    Really I think its the pixel density that people are unhappy about, going from the 17" RGB LED to the M18x panel. At 1920 x 1080, the M18x panel is 120ppi. The 17" RGB LED at 14.4 inches wide was 133ppi. I think it's worth noting that the "ideal" pixel density is more like ~100ppi (i.e. 96). Those HDTVs at 32-60 inches and the same 1920 x 1080 aren't even close by comparison. So even 1600 x 900 is a fair resolution for a notebook screen of this size.

    What it probably comes down to is OPTIONS. The M18x has none, just one 1080p screen. The M17x R2 had a 1440 x 900 base screen, and the 1920 x 1200 RGB LED. Most laptops have similar options for a base screen and a high end screen. I can't say I disagree that a flagship like the M18x should have an RGB LED (IPS?) among its options, but as previousy mentioned, I doubt its in the cards in terms of manufacturing. But who knows, as notebooks and tablets and portable computing gains market share, maybe larger laptops will become the new destops (especially with plug-in external graphics card options) and we'll get all the screen options we can handle.

    Until then, I would say buying 16:10 external monitors are a way to vote with your wallet and let the company know what you want. Buying a notebook with a 16:9 screen certainly doesn't discourage them from making more.

    I wish an option for a bigger screen size that fit a 16:10 natural resolution with 1920x1200, and like you said with a better density of PPI.

    Are you agree with that ?
