The press release (of course from Nvidia) shows it beating the 6970 by 10-40% depending on the game ....

Ya that is BS as there will be games where they are tied and games where the 6970m will do better. On the whole I call it a 5% win for nvidia and a MASSIVE loss in value due to pricing.....

    I....

    I'm just so happy.... :D

I don't think anyone will be too upset; the 6970's are still top notch, and most seem not only happy with ATI, but actually prefer them. The cards still run cool, and have low power consumption while more than handling demanding games. Plus, cheap (as in, "not expensive," not "low quality").

Well, mine is enroute, and the Dell order screen hasn't updated the cards and pricing yet. Depending on how much the 580s run, I'll consider doing the return.

I'm not pissed. I've always prefered ATI/AMD over Nvidia and from what I'm seeing the 580 isn't that much faster than the 6970.

I'm still within my return window but I got an amazing price and I'm satisfied. :D

I'm just not sure whether I should keep my R2 because of the RGB as a kind of "collector's item" since it was Alienware's best total system to date, or sell it while I can still get decent coin. :/

Id say sell it, the screen is def not as good on the m18x especially from the facotry but once you mess with the settings a bit you can still make the thing look pretty great

should have asked the rep what the delays for ship times will be for 580m...are they in stock or are they delayed forever?

See Red I wouldn't even consider the 570M at that price, since I am guessing the 6970s would probably out perform it ... for half the price. But if you love your NV ... I understand :)

I was just about to ask if anyone has an idea of how the 570m's will perform in comparison to the 6970m's.

Should I consider the nvidia-exclusive features when making this decision? Like Physx and what not? I'm pretty floored with the price scheme on those new nvidias. I think I'll just stick with the 6970's.

Oh yeah, man, my 540m with 10k+ in 3dmark06 just rocks) i love it :p The reason is that i hope 570m will perform like 485m, if less - i don't even look at it any more.. The thing is that if Nvidia remains on the same road as with desktop gpu's: 570=480, that would be simply awesome! For me, i would rather prefer 6990m CF for M18x i want to order, but no words on its release date still :(

$800 extra, 300% of the price of 6970s for 10% gain ??? Not looking good. Now i am even more pissed I waited this long before ordering ... shoulda just jumped on the 6970s from the outset ...

Don't forget about future driver maturity for the 580M though. The 6970 has 6 months of driver updates and performance increases already.

Plus on a PERSONAL note, when I went to 5870's and going to the "Red" side for the first time in MANY years, it further reinforced my beliefs that I'll never go away from Nvidia ever again after what I experienced (better driver stability (imo), less glitches in games (imo), less of a kiddy control panel (imo), better options/tweaks in the control panel (imo), physx, 3d vision, etc.)

IMHO, if you have the cash and strong feelings about Nvidia or AMD, then go for the 580s. Personally, I'm EXTREMELY impressed by the 6970 in Xfire so far. That isn't a knock on Nvidia - it's my experience. Again, in my experience, I've had a lot of issues with SLI in my past two laptops, but that isn't to say that Nvidia is bad or that Xfire is perfect.

In other words - congrats to those who were waiting for a better Nvidia option for the M18x!! If it was available when I got mine, I probably would've taken it. But I'm truly, honestly thrilled with what I have now.

I think where the GTX 580m will make the biggest difference is for people what want a GOOD 3D capable M17x R3 vs the anemic GTX 460m

On the M18x it is a huge value fail though :( (since no 3D option)

I'll take that bet. My prediction: In tesselation heavy games like Crysis 2, it will murder the 6970s. Depending on the price, once my refund comes through, I'll likely grab the 580M SLi setup.

its about time AW came in with a big hitter.

I, like most serious gamers, prefer Nvidia and have been waiting in the wings for a premier offering. So I've got my marching orders and am ready to lay down some cash for this sucker.

My sick M17x R1 is at the Dell depot. Im not sure what will ship back but if they haven't upgraded it, they can keep the damn thing.

Neither officially supports 3D in the m17x though, or at least the config tool won't let you get a 580m with the 120 Hz screen.

The 6000 series has MUCH improved tesselation over the 5000 series though bringing the performance much closer to that of the Fermi cards

I would say that is good sense right there....$1200 for a couple of gpu's is super-expensive IMHO - especially if its for a 10% performance increase. Price can only go down from there....Crikey...if they are $1200usd then thats gonna be about a £2000gbp upgrade.....ridiculous!

Isnt it like $320usd for crossfire 6970's atm for you guys in the US? - thats where my cash would be heading....unless you absolutely MUST HAVE the green team in your system....

So, people who bought AMD arent as serious? - not wanting to sound offensive but everyone has a choice and it doesnt mean your NOT serious just because you MAY prefer AMD over Nvidia - certainly on the price to performance ratio, AMD hammers Nvidia into the ground.....

Personally, I love a good bargain.....weighing things up (and of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion or preference) the NV is FOUR times more expensive by the sounds of things....for maybe 10% gain?.....hmmmmmmmmm
