I have a question. Since from a spec standpoint this should support 3D, we know that Dell hasn't certified it for 3D, Nvidia supports the 580M for 3D, will it work with 3D or not?

I'd really like to hear some sort of announcement pertaining to when the 6990m will be released. That's all I'm really waiting for now. If the price is also a bit unreasonable, I'll just get the M18x with the 6970's.

2D performance compared, awesome nvidia -
I'll wait for the 590m, should be out the week after next.
-
good call, ill get 595m the week after.
-
DAMN no 3d support according to nvidia website for m17x or m18x
-
-
-
directly from nvidia, take it as you will -
23% faster than the 480M, lol. Nice try Nvidia, the 480M was a fiasco, the 6970M also outperforms it by ~15-20%.
-
Thats exactly my point Aik ... i want to know what they are talking about with their 6x the tesselation of any other mobile GPU ... is that possible ?
I mean, a 23% gain over the 480m ... is kinda crap, especially for the price. Many people have noted that this is NOT compared to the 485m ... I think that might have looked bad.
Anyone wanna put the work into comparing the Nvidia released benches for the 580 vs 485m ... hrm. I think I might just do that now ... -
Ok, so the best I can do with the info thats out there is as follows ... I had to eliminate many game to game comparisons because whats available for FPS comparison from Nvidia is unclear as to DX 11 or 10 or 9 etc. SO I wanted common denominators only.
KEEP IN MIND, Benches and FPS in games for the 485 are on older machines and with older drivers. All this data is from Notebookcheck and Nvidia directly.
All benches 485 source: notebookcheck, 580 source: Nvidia.

485m SLI – 89.4 FPS – high settings (source notebookcheck)
580m SLI – 66 FPS – high settings + DX 11 (source Nvidia) -
I get that its a limited sample, but I didn't want to compare apples to oranges too far, there is already inconsistency with drivers and age of machines etc ... this is the best I could do in an hour or so...

The moral of the story is they are a slightly overclocked 485m.....
-
the gtx 485m had a ceiling of around 700mhz, hopefully these 580s hit 800..

Overclocking is where I expect an improvement if the GTX 460 to GTX 560 changes tell us anything
They are functionally identical but the GTX 560 has some transistor improvements that reduce leakage -
The 580m is the fastest GPU in the world. When mature drivers appear it will get even faster. The silver bullet in all this is how much it going to cost.
I was talking to some some Dell reps last night (where do they get these bottom feeders from?) and they know less than nothing. The tech guys, as always, had more of an idea but even they had not got to play with them yet. -
Can somebody explain why Clevo laptops support 580m and 3D and Alienware ones don't? Isn't it about the card and the display, and if both can work with each other, the thing is supposed to work? I don't get it. If Clevo can do it, why AW can't?

You do realise they are slightly overclocked, respun 485m's, right?
The 485m uses the GF104 chip, an unlocked but underclocked desktop gtx460.
The 580m uses a GF 114 core, based on the desktop gtx560ti which came out in January of this year when nvidia respun their old fermi based cores.
There is no hidden performance down the line unless there is a problem with current drivers as it's already been out for 6 months.
As for 3D out. There will be two ways to do it, trusting nvidia havn't cocked this bit up. You can either use the hdmi 1.4 out to drive 720p60 or 1080p24 in 3d to your 3dtv or gen 3 (has hdmi 1.4) desktop 3d display or you can get a display port to dual link dvi adapter and run 1080p120 on desktop 3d monitors.
Be advised though, I like many others found 3d to be a serious anticlimax for SP and is not advised for competitive online gameplay at all.
Personally, I stand by the 6970m's value. They are based on the 6 series barts core, so should have pretty good tessellation performance vs the 5 series based cores which were not very good. They have seemingly good power saving modes. Frequently updated CAP's and most of all are pretty cost effective mobile gpu's. I don't know why nvidia price gouge so much. Perhaps they know the die-hards and fanboys will buy it no matter how much they charge.
Either way, this isn't a game changer. It's a nvidia refreshing the line to keep everything in toe until they release the latest stuff based on 28/20nm comes out. I'm all for competition trusting they get their pricing in line. -
Yes , and the 6990 will be an overclocked, respun 6970 etc etc......
-
-
exactly the 6990 will actually be different
-
and you know this how?
-
The 6990 if it does exist will be based on Barts XT as the 6970 is based on Barts Pro, which is a different core.
960:48:32 core config of Barts pro vs the 1120:56:32 of Barts XT. XT is a bit quicker. (e.g. 25fps in metro 2033 vs 30fps)
If AMD wanted to seal the deal for fastest mobile gpu, the 6990 would do it. Not that it's needed with the cost of the 580m. -
I was able to order my 580M SLI for $400 over my price below. Had to downgrade the ram to 8 from 16.
-
So $400 + $240 for the ram.
$640 for a mild gpu upgrade and halving of ram. Ouch, naughty nvidia. -

ES 6970m's have been shown to have 1120 shaders vs 960 and they did perform better as a result. I would say it is more than speculation as to what the 6990m will be
-
Let's hope so. I am all for speed and FPS. Whats under the hood is simply methodology.
-
It's official the 580M SLI is now available on Dell US site. +$1,200. No single card option yet nor 560M's or 570M's.
-
Check it out now! Can't believe it.... Is that overpriced?!!??
The Dell Online Store: Build Your System -
on the usa site...
$1200 as we all know...
I gotta go water my money tree...
my order for my 18x was auto canceled by dell last week because they're totally incompetent....
now i can think about placing another order... but i just dont' think i can justify 1200 bucks for gpus!
order away! -
hah! you beat me to it
-
Oh yeah! Just as soon as I can get someone to pay me 1200 bucks for my 460s, those babies are mine!
-

-
damn $1200... i still want them
-
this is a jock right?
-
joke? nope... only $1200 ... isn't 55fps instead of 50 worth it?
-
I think AW could hit gold if they offered a 570M SLi option for even $600 over base.
-
The only reason i could go for 580M sli is if i could have 6970M CF and find a buyer for them real quick! that will make an upgrade cost of 600$ (at max) instead of 1200$)))

Not like we can say this is a surprise......shame though....
All of the M17x GPUs and the 6970s up to this point were very well priced (AMD AND Nvidia prices) -

Well I am sticking with my 6970's......next time I change will be when I change the whole shebang more than likely....unless 6990m are a good deal "if and when" but $1200 for two mobile gpu's? - pffffff.....Id rather throw that cash towards a good desktop system or a couple more Ultrasharp Monitors......reckon id get more enjoyment out of three monitors for gaming than watching fraps flicker up a few more fps in the top corner lolol...seeing as how these 6970's can do the job extremely well....
