Is it possible to replace the slot-loading DVD drive w/ a 2nd hard drive? I see some hard drive caddys online but they appear to be for the Area-51 M15x which I know had a "Smart Bay" to do just that...swap for a hard drive.
I guess it *could* be possible to open up the case & swap the drive that way but I'm not sure. Any advice is appreciated.

One thanks alot Dell/Alienware for making two entirely different systems and calling them m15x/m17x!!!!! If your M15x is an AREA 51 M15x, ie the one with the garbage hinges than yes, your optical drive is a hot swapable drive that can be replaced with a hard drive.
OOPS just read your sig, yes you can place a AREA 51 M15x specific hot swap hardd rive in place of the optical drive. -
Where have you seen them for sale? -
It has to be an Area 51 M15x. The optical drive pulls out and a hard drive the shape of the optical drive will slide in its place. Its called hot swap.

I have to say that the hot swappable feature in the Area-51 m15x has always been awesome for me! I have a hot swappable Blu-Ray/DVD optical drive, 2nd battery and 2nd 500GB hard-drive.
This is an excellent feature that I wish more manufacturers would adopt.
*pun intended -
Alienware : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks
Hope this will help.
I got the info from this forum only. There is a guy who has a demo (help), how to replace your optical drive with a hdd on this website. Please do a search about caddy under alienware forum and you will find more info.
I just got mine for a 1TB hdd few days back; unfortunately I did not have time to replace it.
However, for any changes in your m15x please do not forget to follow the alienware manual provided on dell website for dismantling your notebook.
Good luck!!! -
These might work, but the Area 51 M15x has specific drivers that enable you to hot swap, ie pull out one device and insert the other w/out rebooting to have it work, like a USB. -
You could easily use it as a swap (choose the model applicable to you or contact them over the email, they will guide you accordingly), you have option which one you want to get in their website.
