    MXM notebooks before 3.0

According to them your m17x can support a 280gtx or a 260gtx. You can contact them for more info and also place an order. I'm not too sure if you'll be able to run SLI but 1 280gtx will blow your 9800 sli out of the water.

Edit: Just read a post in this forum and someone has put two 280gtxs in sli so you'll be better off doing that.

FYI for anyone reading this thread, mxm upgrade says they dont have sli compatible GTX280 cards and they also say that a pair of 9800 gt's will still beat a single GTX280... just if anyone was wondering

    Remember, that isn't actually gtx 280m :p
Its the fx 3700m... specifically from HP...

Now they are a bit hard to find, as are most cards like the 9800m GT or even GS at under 200$ each.
But I might have something. :) I have 2x 9800m GS which I would try to sell (they have a legit SLI connector and are identical) but they are strange and I haven't gotten them working yet.
Also have some 3600m which have the same basic performance as 9800m GS but run a lot cooler, no SLI connector but they will work with 9800m GT vbios guaranteed.

    About a single 280m vs 2x 9800m GT...
This is really about the heat concentration. E. G. if you were to put BOTH of your heatsinks on the single 280m you may be able to overclock it to 9800m GT SLI performance. However it is probably impossible to get good enough cooling that way, so it makes more sense to have 2 cards and give the heat some space.

Unfortunately, the true gtx 280m, 260m and 160m cards are the only good reliable MXM 2.1 cards left around and they are quite difficult to find (at under 300$)

USMC, would ya take $275 right now threw Paypal? I was running a single 9800m GT, and was thinking about upgrading until Saturday night when it decided to make up my mind for me. I'm have the Area 51 M17x R1, I've already upgraded it to Win 7 64 bit and 8GB of RAM. Next was going to be the video cards, but I'm not near as savy with computers as you are. I'm a little afraid to do the upgrade you did with the GTX 280's...Please let me know about the 9800's
