    Hey guys,

My nvidia 8700m GT in my M15x died recently, so I've been chatting with Dell over a replacement. The first rep suggested the ATI Mobility 5770, but instead he sent me the regular, desktop version of the 5770, not the mobile one. I returned it and spoke with someone else. Unfortunately they do not have the Nvidia 240m in stock, nor do they plan to any time soon. So he suggested either the ATI 5850 or the 5730. I'm aware that the 5850 is a better card, but it also has a non mobile version, whereas the 5730 is only available for laptops. What should I do?

your laptop is the old model of the m15x?
if it is i think that you cant get a hd5000 series to work on your computer, is not compatible
you can put on this the cards that are mxm 2.1 standar, not mxm 3.0

It is not the current model, but the one before it. What options do I have?

3870 is your most reliable choice

if you feel adventurous you can try 4850 but good luck finding them and there might be other issues as it's yet untested

How much is Dell charging you for the ATI 5850? I ordered a Alienware M15x and its coming with the GT240 and I would like to upgrade it to ATI 5850, but dont know where to buy it from.

Your best choice is an ATi Mobility 3870. It's well priced, it'll be more powerful than your old 8700M, and it shouldn't die provided it's not overheating massively.

Apart from that, an nVidia 9800M GT, 8800M GTX, 8700M or 8600M will fit. I wouldn't recommend any of those though, they have a fundamental fault that means they'll burn out very easily.
