Wondering if anyone has upgraded their Area 51 m7700 (D900T) to use one of the cedar mill processors?
    I'm looking at upgrading to a P4 661 (3.6Ghz). Specifically the D0 stepping with the 65W TDP (Model SL9KD)
Not sure if the BIOS will support it, so a little hesitant to purchase.
It's one of the last LGA775 models, but is based on a 65nm process vs the Prescott 90nm process.

How much are the P4's going for on ebay these days? I can't imagine much. I don't know if anyone here has tried that upgrade. What's in there now?

Impossible to get the SL9KD on ebay. I've asked most of the suppliers who seem to offering re-furbed Pentium 4's. They have most of the other cedar mill variants. They're going for as low as €15 before shipping. I currently have the 570 Prescott (3.8Ghz). The reason I'm looking to upgrade is mostly for the NX-bit support (for Win 8+ support), and the lower heat output.

How bad is Win 8 now with the P4? I may just be expecting more but I have had terrible performance running anything Vista+ on anything lower than a Core 2 Duo+. On a P4 I would stick with XP or switch to Linux. Running any 6.x Win Kernel OS on a P4 has been a clunky experience.

Do you have ebay searches set up? It took me a while to find a T7600G but I did. I would set up some email alert searches playing around with the name, model name, speed, etc. Also did any computers come with them? Sometimes you can find someone junking a whole laptop who has no idea what they have for cheap.

Currently can't run Win 8 with the P4 because the 570 doesn't support the NX bit or PAE, which are required for Windows 8. I currently run Windows 7, which runs just as well as XP ever did for me. I ran Vista for a period of time, but performance was terrible as you said. 7 runs just fine though.
However, my intention is to update the system to Windows 10 eventually, as I'd like to get another few years out of the laptop (even though it's already 10 years old). To that end, I'm planning to upgrade the RAM from 2GB to 4GB along with the processor.
My inclination is to attempt the CPU upgrade even though there's no precedent for it (or so it would appear). Closest related upgrade I've seen is this - http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-area-51-aurora-legacy-systems/607305-alienware-m7700-d900t-d900k-plz-help.html

He upgraded to a 672, which at least suggests the BIOS didn't crap out on some of the new hardware supported features.
Re. the ebay searches, I have a few but the problem is largely that because I'm looking for a specific stepping of a given processor model, it's _extremely_ niche. If was just looking for a given processor model without any regard for stepping, it wouldn't be an issue. There's plenty of 661s, just very few D0 steppings (SL9KD) of that model

Good luck in your searches and please report back here if you ever get one and find it works.
