running alien fx on 64 vista. and my alienfx just died.... it won't doesn't turn on :X
-
It just can't die... sometimes being a USB device it is not detected by your machine. Solution? Reboot!
-
There was an error while AlienFX Controller was communicating with the computer. This might have been caused due to a problem with the hardware or the software.Try these solutions to correct the issue, in the following order:
- Try to enable AlienFX Controller again. Right-click on the AlienFX icon in the Windows notification area and select 'Enable Alienware AlienFX'.
- Shut down your computer and power it back on.
If neither of these solutions works, please contact Alienware technical support.
This error may also be caused if Alienware AlienFX software is installed on a computer without the proper hardware support for Alienware AlienFX.
booted up many times, tried on vista 64 AND xp 32 bit. . . .. somethings loose maybe? or any suggestions.. -
Not sure what it is but lets try to fix it. So what exactly happened and how it turned off? On a fine boot lights did not turned up? or turned off while system was running.
Give it a cold boot. Shutdown machine and unplug the battery. unhook the power cord. now put both back in and turn it on.. can you see the lights? what all lights can you see?
download USBlyzer from here , install and reboot the machine
http://www.usblyzer.com/download.htm
explore the devices available on the left hand side in the USBlyzer, select the AlienFX and send me a screenshot of what you see there -
Ok another fix.. if above does not work
1) Windows+R -> Run -> devmgmt.msc -> Enter
2) Expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers" (must be the last one in the list)
3) Select one by one all controllers and delete all of them
4) Wait for some time and they all will come back automatically, should not take more than 5 minutes
5) Reboot... does it work now ? -
i don't know what to say to you but you're a genious. thanks.
-
Love to see happy faces
You're Welcome!
-
When my alienfx dies, I just do this: shut down, take out battery and power adaptor, press power button for 5 secs, connect power adapter, turn it on. It should work! Then you can put in the battery
-
hey Vikas,
have you ever seen this error before? comes up everytime on boot. I think it has something to do with the AlienFX background application...
also, any clue how to enable the auto-diable option for the touchpad when you plug in an external mouse?
thanks! -

Once I made that change, I still got the error the next time I restarted. But a day later, it didn't do it anymore. I don't know exactly how that worked. -

sorry about that then

Mystik, That should work. The problem is with Registry permissions and you should be able to resolve that from that link. PM me if you still face that issue.
-
Guys, I noticed that you just cant record using the Inbuilt Microphones as default sound card driver that comes from Windows Update does not recognize the hardware. To fix that, please install the latest sound card driver from here

Thanks Find I can't thank you enough for all the work you did
-
Zomb, have you got your camera working ? Coz mine just work fine even with Yahoo Messenger and I really havent changed anything. This is maybe first time I tried on Vista x64
-
My camera worked normally without any driver installations...
-
Yeah my camera started working after I ran a registry cleaner so something I installed might of screwed something up and the mic works fine too. tks
-
Anyone else notice that the touchpad now has a side scroll bar with 64 bit synaptics driver and not the 32 bit one
-
not sure... I haven't used 32bit OS which came with machine for more than 30-45minutes

my next issue to solve is to fix the darn "Digital Vibrance" Issue... I suppose I could just swap drivers or something. -
Just wanted to let you know that I'm working on downloading everything right now onto my flash drive. Vista 64 ult. is installed on my machine just awaiting all the goodies! I'll let you know if I have any problems... anyone going to sticky this?
-
Make sure that the following registry path
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\EventLog\Security has READ/WRITE permissions for SYSTEM and Administrators group, also EventLog should have read only permission. To change the permissions, select the folder->Edit->Permissions.
See picture below..
Note: Registry editing could be harmful so be very careful
Also make sure that you are part of Local Administrators group, this is required only once I suppose. To get your account membership run the following command from CMD.exe
whoami /groups | find "Administrator" -
wally,
do let us know how things go and do vote for the poll. I wish I never had 'Haven't tried yet' option in the poll. No idea if I can change that. To sticky this or not is the decision of the MODS, that would be Chaz or Ben I guess. -
Thanks Chaz for quick update and removing the option 'Haven't yet tried' which was not giving accurate success rate.
May I request you all to please do a POLL again, if you had selected 'havent tried' earlier but then later switched to x64 -
I'm a power-user (at least) so I'm not afraid of a little registry editing, and I know my account is Admin (with UAC on).
I'll look into this tomorrow (hopefully I'll find time) and let you know. Thanks for all the hard work so far.

BUILTIN \Administrators Alias S-1-5-32-544 Group used for deny only
where each column is as follows:
Group Name, Type, SID, Attributes
Status: unchanged. -
Just followed your tips and it works for me.
I'd just like to note that you have to find the drivers for the integrated graphics from a 3rd party site as for some reason, microsoft can't find them for you. -
Seems like a success. Great job findvikas, +reps.

That could be a good thing to try.

UAC is really annoying in general. Once you turn it off, you won't want to go back.
-
UAC, to me, is a godsend. Unlike most XP users who opted to just run as an Administrator with a Firewall and Anti-viral program, I went the other way... Ever since Windows 2000, I started adopting the concept of anti-virus through lack-of-rights.
Windows 2000 started it, I had two accounts, an Admin, and a User account... I started as a Power User account, but as I slowly discovered, I wasn't disabling much... I eventually moved to having only a User Account and I slowly figured out how to tweak the OS just-so, so that I could have access to everything I normally would, without giving myself Admin rights.
the downside? when I would need to Install a new application or game, I'd need to completely log out, logon as my admin, perform the install, check for incompatibilities that would prevent my User from accessing the new application (and it's shortcuts), log out, log back on as my User, for Day to day operations.
The concept is that, as a User, I'm only allowed Disk Write Access in my small section, the My Documents Folder (or in Vista, C:\Users\-my username-)... which could take up most of the disk or not, but I digress. Since I could only write to this small section, Whenever a piece of malware, adware, or even a Virus, entered my system, it would attempt to write itself to C:\Windows and would reach a critical error (and probably crash)... Unable to write to disk: No Permission. Even if the Virus handled the error and kept running, a quick reboot would wipe my memory clean of any trace of it's executable... then, at worst, I'd have to clear my browser cache to get rid of it.
the upside? not having to pay for, and consistently download updates for an anti-virus suite that, itself, is full of holes and vulnerabilities, Just so it can lag, and slow down my system.
So I get a consistently fast computer, requiring less reformats and is faster, overall.
UAC accomplishes all this without having all the same hoopala of setup, and hassle of logging out and back in 50000 x to determine if something is working correctly.
IMO, anyone who ISN'T using it, is just fooling themselves.
