GPUz says CF is enabled, but windows is "detecting" another display...

3dmark06 is about 4-5k so I'm sure they are not running in CF...

They ran 8.6k single, so no way. What Drivers are you running, how are temps, and go to control panel, change resoulution and tell it to output only on desktop 1 at 1440x900.

    1 did run 8k+

but windows is detecting another display, I'm suspecting that the other display is messing with it...

it detects the laptop display +another non-PNP genaric

its not the video cards, I tried both masters+ just the single

I'm installing vista now to see if it is just a win7 issue, or a hardware issue...

The pnpgeneric is the VGA it wants to output to. When I put the 280M in, I had the same problem. You have to force it to not notice the PnP by setting it to only display on desktop 1 in the Control PAnel. At least, I think that should work.

windows 7 pro won't install... it gets about 90% of the way, then goes to a flashing black cursor on "other" monitor, nothing is displayed on the laptop screen

win7 installed fine on 1 card when I first installed it...

EDIT: win7 only installs with the CF cable disconnected...

I had kind of a similar issue when I installed my 4850s, this is what worked for me, uninstall all ati software by opening up an installer for driver and click on remove. Then use drive sweeper to get rid of everything else. Reinstall working drivers, mine were 10.4, not sure for 3870s, and then install them both with the CF enabled.

I had to check and uncheck the enable crossfire box a couple of times, then when i enabled catalyst AI, it worked.

Maybe try something similar this and see if it works. Good luck!

it looks like the CPU overheated and downclocked... :( 3dmark says that its a 948mhz cpu

FYI: the diffrence in temp between a so-so past job and a good past job with lapped HSs is 10-15* under load...

after a run of 3dmark06, the cards hit a MAX of 71* and the cpu was 70*

Yepp. Sorry. I do remember it not going over 75C when cooling two 7950's, and thats not much of a lower TDP card. You get the high res screen in?

Yeah, not too bad of a difference. If you get a t7600G in there, and get it over 2.8, you'll break 12k on 3DMark, I bet. The CPU is the bottleneck in that system.

seeing as the difference between 2.0 and 2.2 was over 1k in 3dmark I would say so :p

not stable at anything more than 2.25ish

Thats 71C. Not hot at all for a computer component in a laptop, but not cool either. I'd say thats completely normal. It is handling the throughput of two fast GPU's.

I thought the 3870s shouldn't be using the SLI chipset...

another random quark... it hangs before post when restarting... when shutting off/on its fine, but when I restart it, it hangs...

Its not just for SLI. Its pretty much a graphics controller. All the signals from both cards go through there and out. Explains whay it heats up. And before post? Like, nothing, pause, then post? I had it hang periodically on the Windows is loading screen but that was because I corrupted part of the install when I tossed Linux on it.

Never had that problem, but I think I know what it is. Because of my corrupted install, I had to use a bootloader CD to load windows, so I set the BIOS to boot the CD/DVD drive first. Go in the BIOS and change it to boot from the HDD (or SSD) first, and it should work.

Seems like a fine machine! The sli chip probably handles the pci-e lanes so it does get used!

    7600G @ 2.8-3ghz 2x3870 4gb 1920x1200, very nice at a budget price!

Only bad thing about it is that it has ICH7M so no SATA2.

That, and it can't have 4GB RAM. The system will only ever "see" 2.5GB due to a chipset limitation.

if I go with just a regular t7600, I will have $400ish into it when it is all done, with the t7600g $500ish

I need to configure some sort of fan control... the fans turn on med. speed when temps hit 50*, then drops to 35* and turn off...
