Anyone know yet if a Ati hd4850 will work in a Area 51 m15x (not M15x)?

Ive seen that they have the same MxM 2.1 slot form. I have done alot of research and have come up with little or nothing.

I am aware of a Nvidia 9800m GT/GTX are the best/stable and dont have a long life to them.

Ive read alot of this. I just need answers to compatability between the m15x and a 4850.

    Thank you

Actually the best stable is the 3870m :p doesn't have a high failure rate, runs cooler, performs at about equal gpu power and better driver support. You could be the first to try a 4850 though :D

I'm aware of that but I'm looking for a High End card and not a Mid-range.

My thought is, "Go big or go home"

I need something that is stable and can run everything. The 4850 is considered better than the 9800m GTX on a scale. I have a opportunity to purchase a 4850, but I still need to know if its compatible with the m15x.

Im looking to play at least Skyrim, Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3, etc.
World of Warcraft is the most played game on the laptop but it runs fine with a 8600m GT.

Sorry, I'm not here for trading. I'm just trying to get some information. Ive put too much work into fixing the numerous issues with the laptop. Its kind of became my "baby".

I dont have the M15x, Ive got a Area 51 m15x-R1. The laptop with Dual core tech (max core is x9000), MxM slot 2.1, Silver Color with Skullcap design for LCD panel. Pre-Dell is I guess what I'm saying. Fairly old.

The card that was offered to me is also a Slave version. Does this make a difference and can it be flashed to Master?

Yeah, I know what it is. I tested a 4850 in an M9750, an older AW machine, and it worked, albiet at odd clocks. I'd say you have a good shot of it working.

Srry did a edit above. The card is a slave version and i'm not sure if it matters too much. Id rather get it flashed to Master if there is a possible way.

Does it matter if it is a Slave or Master? Do they work the same?

Is there anybody out there with a ATi 4850 Master that be willing to give up for testing purposes. Ill pay shipping to and from location. Prefer somebody in the United States so its fast and reliable shipping.

If it works just from simply installing it, id be willing to purchase it for a fair price.

It would help ppl out there on the NBR forums.

I know im new to the forums but i'd like to get this info out to the public if some1 is willing to help.

I've asked this question a few times out here, like you, I came up with little real information.
I'm also interested in the results so if you do try it, please keep us posted.

For now, I've bought the 3870, the real world performance is equal to the 8800GTX while running cooler.

Theoretically, for you it shouldn't matter if the card is marster or slave, it'll just show up as 4850x2 in device manager. And of course you can flash with another vbios to make it whatever you want :)

Oh and from what I gather, you have the 8600GT. You'll need a new heatsink for the card too.

If someone has a card for me to test, ill get a heatsink purchased and sent 1 day delivery.

Im aware that the Nvidia cards have a square screw positioning and the ATi is more rectangular.

Looking for someone to go "balls deep" with this and get these people some important information.

Edit: I'm a be out of town for the weekend. Any sign of hope would be nice.

The 3870m is considered a high end card since the real world performance is still in the same range. For people saying the m15x can handle the higher temperatures they haven't took into consideration the 280m downclocks itself and the 8800m/9800m do the same thing. I've owned one of those and even did some heatsink modding to get some lower temps but on a summer day it throttled back if I didn't undervolt. The 4850m is another hot running card and you may run into the same problems

It's indeed in another category but just have a look at the scores and keep in mind that 3D Mark favorises nvidia. The real world performance (as in games), is about the same. Even if it's a little downgrade, it still runs a lot cooler.

Thats why I would like to try and get a 4850 tested and information posted. the 4850 is ranked higher than the 9800 GT. From what ive seen on forums about 3D mark and the 9800 series. The Nvidia 9800 is borderline Mid-range and High End, since the Mark program favors the Nvidia.

I want to get this info out to everyone with little or no cost.

Would recent released ATi drivers and Mobility Modder be something needed for testing the 4850? Or can I use a Windows Update to find the drivers?
