I am looking to upgrade the RAM on my M750 from 2 GB to 3 GB. After reading a few older posts on NBR, I am curious if the M9750 that I own has a chip-set limitation that only is able to use 2.5 GB's of RAM.

I have Windows 7 32-bit, which is why I am only upgrading to 3 GB, but here is some of my system specs:

    Video/Graphics Card: NVIDIA® GeForce® Series - 512MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8700M GT

    Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7200 2.0GHz 4MB Cache 667MHz FSB

    Memory: 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 667MHz – 2 x 1024MB

I am not sure what the motherboard is, and I don't have the laptop right now (the GPU chip is being repaired), but when I get it back, I can look it up if I need to.

All M9750's have a chipset limitation that only recognizes 2.5GB of RAM, regardless of how much you have installed. Its not really worth the upgrade, and some people experience stability issues.

Wow, really? All M9750's? What a big let down.

Yeah. I went to upgrade, and my system only said 2.5GB. Bummer.

if you only have a single graphics card then your system will be limited to around 3gb and not 2.5

    Yes, I have a single 8700M.

I thought that too, but wouldn't the limit still be 2.5GB because of the 512MB of video RAM since the limitation is 3GB? Or is the chipset limitation 3.5GB?

The limitation is the same 32-bit limitation it always has been which is 4gb. Take the 512 off for the GPU leaves 3.5gb and another 500 off for the other components 3gb.

I see. Well no matter anyways, because I would lose the dual channels on having the same 1 GB sticks if I swapped one of them out for a 2 GB stick, so I think I will just stick with what I have.
