    Offer too good to be true?

    I own an Alienware Area-51 x58 desktop computer that I purchased in early 2009. I own the older legacy system during their transition to dell. I have had numerous problems with the computer consisting of "video hardware errors" which I called tech support and finally replaced my gtx295 by purchasing the gtx 560 ti for what they said was a discounted price (but really i could've probably gotten it cheaper at newegg).

    Anyway, so few weeks into the new video card i am still having the video hardware error (after changing drivers, replacing video cards) I am convinced it is a bigger problem then my video card. I call tech support today to explain my problem I am having and he said because I own the old legacy systems they are limited on what they can do due to availability of parts and because my warranty is still valid that they have this offer they can make available to me known as the "Alienware Cancellation reorder process". Which he explained that I purchase a new Aurora alienware dell system for no more then the purchase price of my old alienware (which was 3,508). They will send me a shipping label within 2 days of purchasing my system which requires me to send my old alienware back to them. Then once the old alienware has been received they will send me a refund check for the old alienware that is equivalent to the purchase price to the aurora.

    I have spoke to two different technicians and they said that this offer is legit. However, I am cautious because i have to upfront the cost 3,309 dollars for the Aurora and send my old computer back and wait for a refund. Here is a copy of the body of the email the representative sent to me.................(below)

    This is a confirmation email of what we spoke over the phone a couple of minutes ago.



    The process we are going to do is called CANCELATIO-REORDER, it goes as follow:



    1. A new order for an Alienware computer needs to be placed matching the price of what you originally paid for the old one. (cold be more, and you will end up paying the difference.)

    2. 2-3 days after the order is placed, you will receive on your email a prepaid shipping label to send your “old Alienware” back.

    3. Your refund for the full amount of what you paid originally will be ready 10 business days after we receive the “old Alienware” in the cancelation facilities.

    4. The whole process could take in between 15-22 to get the money back via check.

    5. NEW system needs to have 2 years of advance plan (warranty) for the process to be accepted.



    The amount to be refunded is: $ 3508.35you can go above the price paying the difference.



    I am giving you until the end of January to take this option preapproved by MANAGEMENT.



    My schedule is Monday thru Friday from 4pm to 11pm Mountain time. Contact me directly thru email to call you right back and help you to get your new computer.



    ...........What do you guys think? Have any of you heard of this? I'm trying to find out more information before I make that sort of commitment. Too good to be true?

    If you're paying the money to dell, and it's done with a credit card, then it's real. It sounds like they are unable to source warranty parts so they're buying back the systems.

    However, check if the new system is actually better. Generally newer ones are, but confirm this, and also consider if new parts can't be sourced, you could end up with something that is to expensive to fix, should it ever die... should you keep it, but on the other hand, it may end up being worth it's weight in gold if the used parts are in demand.

    Without having all the info, I'd say anytime you buy a new computer, get to use it, then get full purchase price for it is a good deal.

    Man, this the deal everyone with long warranties prays for. They can no longer get the parts (and perhaps they don't have service documents) to repair your system so you get a new system.

    You can be sure a brand new $3500 system will be MUCH better than your old system. As someone else said, as long as you are calling Dell and hearing this then it is legit. Do it with a credit card, if anything goes wrong you could dispute it, but it sounds legit to me.
