I have a area 51 m 17. I have recently had to reinstall win 7. I did a original install of win 7 and had no problems. It came with vista.

The problem I am having is that when I put a dvd/cd in the drive, it always reads as blank. I don't remember having this problem the first time I installed the OS. I did have to replace the dvd drive with one that alienware sent me while still under warranty, but that was a simple swap and it worked fine. It reads the blu ray drive in My Computer, but the dvd drive doesn't appear. I think I remember one drive for blu ray and one for dvd/cd from before, but only the blu ray drive shows. It's not a hardware issue, because I am only rinstalling because I had a hard drive failure and the dvd worked up until I did the os reinstall on a new hard drive.

Anyone have this issue and a cure? I tried having windows find a new driver, but it says I have a current one. It reads, blu rays and cds, but not dvds. I am sure it is a driver issue as it worked on the same OS on a different hard drive.

From what I'm interpreting I think your right. Unless you have a external DVD rom drive there should only be the blu-ray drive in your my computer window. If it's having issues reading anything try an external dvd rom drive. If it reads it there might be something wrong with your blu-ray drive. If it doesn't there could be something wrong with your windows/drivers install. Start with this first and let us know what goes on.
