Hi
I have been kicking about the forum for a couple of weeks now since I decided to resurrect my 2008 M17 r1 and I was wondering if there is a group on some sort of social media for people with these classics still in use kinda like a classic car club ?
-
Haha this forum is about it. It was pretty active a couple years back but this past year it has been SLOOOWWWWW. Most people have probably junked theirs by now but I won't let mine go.
-
Yeah this fourm is all that is around anymore and even then there is little activity. There are still quite a few M9750/M17 R1's in use, but anything from the M9700 back is pretty much obsolete now.
-
I had to cover my m5750's ears when I read the word obsolete haha
-
Haha
Did the m5750 come out at the same time as the M9750?
I only say the M9700 is obsolete now as the single core amd cpu's are unbearable to use haha. I do miss my green M9700, but not the ML-37

I'm amazed these still fetch decent money on ebay however getting hold of divers and support starts getting tricky I think here is about the best I have found. The support website for the alienware uk site is quite poor and I cant sign up for the usa one. im just surprised there's not facebook group or something as there seems to be one for everything else Haha

There are a couple of us that still have them up and running.

I'm still using m15x on daily basis. After 5 years it is still my main PC and I'm not ready to change it. Speed wise it is the same or even better than new laptops, why would I. Only thing with what it can't compete is autonomy, noise and heat, but I can still play WoW on good settings, lol.

The m5750 came out Sep of 2006 and mine was ordered on Day 1. It was the first Alienware to offer a Core 2 Duo. I was shopping for a school laptop that summer and someone advised I wait until the Core 2. Man am I glad I did as it's still a great CPU for day-to-day stuff and ran circles around anything else at the time.
The M9750 came after the m5750.katalin_2003 likes this. -
Alienware m17 owners here. Still live a kicking.. Doing fairly well.. Still playing games at a high level with this machine. It is an excellent piece of hardware. Love how it has optical out... You don't see that very often these days. It is a very versatile media machine.

Ha ha still got some life in mine I got it spruced back up one more time and actually still does a good job but I had to replace everything cosmetically that is I replaced the case completely it's all new accept the motherboard and screen even gave it a new keyboard. looks new even if it is very old . Runs good though so I don't part with it. For almost $5000 dollars it should have got better support from Alienware than it received though. But thanks to forums such as this I've managed along the way.Last edited: Dec 30, 2014

Alienware support is a joke and though the video cards in most Core 2 + units were upgradable they would not offer any mxm upgrades to customers.

I am looking for some help and advice, I know computers and never done anything like this before and want to try it. I bought an M17-R1 bare bones laptop and want to build it. I have so many questions as to what to get because I don't want to get something that I think will work and then turn out not to work. So i figured that I would ask you guys first. The only thing the laptop does not come with is an operating system, hard drive, memory and a wifi card. So here is what I am asking:
Video Card: it comes with a Dual ATI HD3870 512MB Video Card CrossFire
Processor: Intel Core 2 Extreme Mobile QX9300 OEM 2.53Ghz 12MB 1066FSB SLB5J? I did some research and found out that this is probably the only processor I can use. Yes or no. If no then which one can I get?
Hard Drive: ? (not sure)
Wifi Card: ? (not sure)
Memory: ? (not sure) I know that the max is 8gb
Again any help is greatly appreciated -
In my naïve nature I also felt for this biggest hoax of laptop GPU card upgradability. They are selling you a dream and false hopes that your extremely expensive laptop will have nearly lifetime support and will be able to boost your old Alienware with top notch latest technology hardware when it will become available in future. Unfortunately all products have their live cycle and PC's industry is one of the shortest like down from 5 years before to 3 years today. We are all victims of fast pacing consumer market and I hate it so much, but what can we do? I'm not going to leave you so soon my m15x, no I'm not!

I reinstalled my windows program did a format and lost my alienFX.exe. Now Ive got everything blue but my keyboard is dark and hard to see . what can I do? Really not fond of the alien command center due to I cant get it to work all the settings properly. I had something installed that was just an icon of the 3 different colored blocks in a group and the description of the .exe. Any suggestions?

Finding the cards myself was a huge pain but after ebay searching I eventually got lucky.
I am not sure what you are asking. The keyboard is lit but dark? As far as I knew brightness couldn't be adjusted.
