this is for ocz whitebook and alienware m17 notebooks to get the best cooling and performance out of their notebook.
everyone can join and share inputs but try to stay on topic.
the reason why this thread was created is because our notebooks have a heating problem on the northbrigde and it caused us to stutter, have mouse issues, couldn't run games, etc.
now we know what the issue is and we fixed it, we found out that making it cooler makes a big difference in proformance.
everything is here.

their are alot of people that helped us and we were glad for all of them and hopefully we can get somewhere with this as well.
WARNING THIS IS TO HELP YOUR NOTEBOOK STAY COOL AND WE RECOMMEND ONLY MORE EXPERINCED PEOPLE TO DO THIS. WE ARE ALSO NOT HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR NOTEBOOK. PLEASE TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK

Yeap and we will be posting detailed pictures and instructions soon for how to copper mod the northbridge heatsink for relief of the stuttering. However, with more cooling i think we can squeeze much more performance than normal users have been seeing.....going from 77c to 72c on the NB has allowed me to gain 590 points in 3dmark06 without any framdrops or stutters as oposed to my previous 88c NB temp. I feel the surface of the NB heatsink does not fully cover the NB 100% and this allowed for overheating on a certain spot of the NB die causing it to go all out of wack, the copper slit helped relieve all stuttering for me for over a day so far...
Also worth noting is the GPU memory bank issue...which Don has posted pics on how to re-apply it individually to each bank. We are currently working on the easiest way to mod the current heatsinks and possibly cool the NB much better than we currently have it so that we can test the performance gains -
i haven't done any copper mods so once i see some ill do some stuff
i have wanted to try this liquid metal cooling pads but i unno -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
mr moo where have you seen these pads?
-
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=4839044
come on Don i got a search bar jp -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Yes but after the Liquid cooling pads are emplaced they cannot be removed... so if a problem did occur it may cause complications, no?
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
ok i saw that. but i used the pads(not that material) on my gpus from the memory. and in 15secs. i hit 108c and 107c on both gpu's.

don i dont understand what you ment in your last post.... what are your idle temps now you modded?
-
i know my current idle temps at 3.2ghz after mod are
tz00: 46c
Core1: 40c
Core2: 42c
Core3: 40c
Core4: 39c
GPU1: 48c
Gpu2: 46c -
what about underload?
-
load temps are:
tz00: 78C
Core1:83c
Core2:81c
Core3:77c
Core4:73c
gpu1:81c
gpu2:79c
this is benchmarking with 3dmark06 during the 4th run in a row in my room with a ambient temp of 73F and the cover for the m17 ON...cpu at 3.2ghz gpu stock -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
right now i am testing mx-2 on my cpu so i am running alot hotter then when i had as5 on it. i was about 5 degrees lower with it and my nb was 47.
-
it need to settle n burn in
i was gettign the temps out -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
ok that's is important. mr moo what are your temps i know your dual core but we are gathering info right now.
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
ok i am having some cpu spikes.
i recommend to download rmclock to moniter you multiplers and you voltage. also your temps and clock speed. we can also do alot with this outdated program. -
im always on high performance profile so wont my multi, voltage, and cpu speed always stay locked anyways at 12x, 1.3v, and 3.2ghz?
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
i am going to kill some process. i am having alot of jumps. and it won't stay still.

after 3d mark 06 and orthos in the backround -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
is your cpu overclocked?
-
no thats every stock back on , on a desk
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
do have any saved pictures or remember what was your temps overclocked?
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
sorry for double post. halogod what else did you coppermod? or is it only the northbridge?
-
i only over lcoked with the bottom off and on a cooler i can try now
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
well i just think stock you are running hot. that's why i asked. i don't think you should past 65-70 on your cpu at 2.53ghz.
-
3 ghz OC with bottom on
ATI tool running and orthos
-
orthos ran for 5 mins to reach max
i dont trust ATI paste job i want to do my own but i suck at putting it on i always put to much .... -
i only copper modded the NB...im going to a hardware store tomorrow to learn about different types of copper....i majored in computer engineering not Metallurgy lol
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
mr moo right now we can help you by undervolting your cpu at stock speeds. it should lower your cpu by 5 degrees and also you NB to. download rmclock and we can go from there.
halogod can you keep us informed on the copper situation.
i am going to try different paste to see what s the best to use. -
only thing higher in thermal conductivty is pure silver and believe it or not i can get a sheet of pure ilver
-
yeah ill report back tomorrow....im using copper about .05mm thick cuurently but its cheap scrap copper that was polished quickly by me...tomorrow hopefully i find better stuff...im thinking of drilling a square in the NB heatsink and placing copper in it and then linking it with copper to the cpu copper vent.....what do u guys think?
-
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=268081 this is a great guide ... this is way easier then i though
one thing we should do it take a pic and label every thing .... i can do that real quick .....??? -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
i get what you mean but i don't think that is a wise choice because wouldn't the heat also go back to the NB... i wish they made it separet from each other. i am thinking of a way to desprise the heat away from it period with out the cpu fan. like add a little extention to it. something. it is just a thought for now. i didn't fully think about it yet.
-
holy crap Halo are you talking about by passing the NB heat sink and running a copper pipe directly to the heat sink ?
ok do yall want me to try my silver mod? -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
btw mr moo. can i get some silver to?
why is there a pad on the gpu. i hit 108 on my gpu using the pads from my memory chips. (i also want to do something about that to) -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
yes do your silvermod. i want to see the results. if it works then i will try gold. Lol. no but do you really think silver will reduce the heat more then gold?
-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_thermal_conductivities
well i gotta get some from my science teacher
we shall see he can order it its like 50 for liek a 5x5 inch super thin sheet -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
did you download rmclock?
also so you think a thinner piece is better then a thicker one. -
i have a bunch of micro cooling fans off what used to be in the sega dreamcast ...im thinking of also designing a seperate heatsink for the nb and running the fans off it....it would fit they are very small
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
can fit with the back cover on?
-
yea but the problem is the fans where u gonn put them ? u put them in the laptop then it just blows hot air in there
i got a mini im gonna try to find a way to force more air in
EDIT mine is a lil to big
although one day i was gameing in class and i put a fan blowing on the back not on the laptop but whne i blew away the hot air out the back i never hit ove 76c while playing fallout 3 -
im going to mod the cover with 2 vents..one for sucktion and one for blowing the air out.....keeping the air in control can easily be done with a anti static plastic that will keep the guided air in control....it will be tight but i think it will work....i really think the NB needs dedicated cooling the cpu runs hot enough as it is
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
modding the back cover adds alot of airflow. i'm tired though and i am tinking of stupid stuff. i have to go to work. i am going to look tought and post and respond to what you have.
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
-
same here we will continue tomorrow i guess...but havent u guys noticed the cover vent for the cpu fan covers half the fan hole??? why would they do that....the gpu fan's cover vent exposes the fans suction hole 100%....the cpu fan is half covered....i think we need to cut in the rest of the vents
-
imma see about the silver and imma post the image of the computer and imma label it back sure to correct it if im wrong
and then think the Whitebook has heating issues lol
where is north and south i think i know but i wanna be sure -
yeah....i think we all need to mod the cover for sure though so its not blocking half the cpu fan....i was shocked when i saw that
-
problem is me getting another
damn AW
mind tellign me where the north and south is ? -
u mean a spare cover in case the mod goes bad?
