Hello, I suspect that my graphics card may be burnt out in my alienware m9700. I have taken the back cover off, but im sortof lost as to where or what to do then. I am attempting to replace the graphics card because i suspect my old one may be bad, or, i simply need to perform what i believe is referred to as a 'recooling' process. Can either be done? Either replacement or recooling? First, I need to know what type of graphics card i have, how can this be physically done as my computer will not boot up unfortuneately. Wehn i take the cover off i do not see anything that looks like what i would envision a graphics card looking like. Any help is very appreciated, thankyou for your time.

It will look something like this, but it will be under a heat sink mounted through the four holes surrounding the die that says "nVidia" on it.

lol, thanks marvie, i suspected it might say nvidia on it somewhere, but i cannot find/see it. thankyou for the link, it pointed the way for me. And now, having taken off the heatsink, it looks to be like the brandname is under quite a bit of stickysomethingorotherness, so i cannot quite read it, as of now. I was expecting it to have a fan attatched to it, just not so on the laptop i suppose.

That is the thermal paste. You will need to clean it all off the heatsink and graphics card and reapply a new dab of it before reinstalling the heat sink or you will have overheating issues.

just to elaborate on what marv said
Rubbing alchohol works really well for removing thermal paste.
Just splash some on a tissue, and rub the TIM (thermal paste) off the GPU die
