    Hi,

I was wondering if the area 51 m15x could work with an intel quad core mobile extreme processor, i have a duo core proessor but wanted to know if, and what model of quad core processor would fit?

(My m15x is not the new dell all powerful one but the 2 years old)

    Thanks.

It means your computers design, motherboard etc.. As far as I know, you'll have to rebuild the whole rig which will cost you a lot more than a new one I think. But I think you can use extreme cores as long as power is fine?

x9000 is the best cpu you can use, with your specs youll have the fastest 1st gen m15x there is.

The X9000 is the best CPU for that system.

Your sig says that you've managed to cram in a 280m gtx in the area 51 m15x?
That card is a lil too hot for the area 51, just learn to watch your temps.

Just thought I'd throw in a better explanation, so this is understood better by the OP.

Basically, within each type of processor (e.g. Core 2) there are multiple processor series. Each series often improves on the last, but requires a different socket for the processor.

In this case, the two last mobile Core 2 processor lines were "Santa Rosa" and "Montevina", with Montevina being the very last Core 2 mobile processors produced.

The Area-51 m15x uses Santa Rosa processors. It's impossible to upgrade it to Montevina processors, as they use a different socket type entirely. Even if you could fit one in, it would never work. The Area-51 m17x also used Santa Rosa. The following M17 and Allpowerful M17x R1 used Montevina processors.

The Santa Rosa line never had a quad core processor in it. The very fastest processor was the 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo Extreme X9000.

However, the Montevina line's fastest processors were the 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo Extreme X9100, and the 2.53GHz Core 2 Quad Extreme QX9300. Neither will fit in your Area-51 m15x unfortunately, as they're a different line of processor.

Montevina was the only mobile "Core 2" processor line to include quad core processors.

Thanks, i thought that this could possibly be the best i could actually get it. It is blisteringly fast. The SSD definatly helped no end.

    Thanks for the comment.

    Yeah,
I got it from mxm-upgrade.com, i was speaking to the owner of mxm and, a fair bit of email swapping later he said as long as it is kept cool it will be ok.
I mean ive had it in their two weeks now and its been great.

I have speed fan installed and regularly check temps. I have the latest bios (x36), (i think is the latest) and when playing modern warfare for 2 hours at weekend temp was hitting 80, which compared to the 8800GTX i had in it before is more or less the same.

I got starcraft II on wednesday (day after release) and so far that has pushed it to 87.

    Thanks very much,
I never really understood that part of it too well. The whole experience of buying and upgrading gradually over the 2 years has taught me alot, howerver because i was never too hot on CPU upgrades i have left it till last to research.
    Thanks for explaining.

No problem. People who aren't extremely knowledgeable about computers often don't understand all there is to upgrades and the such. Hell, only two years ago, I didn't understand anything about how a laptop was pieced together, and that most used integrated graphics.

So I'm curious to know, if the first gen area 51 m15x model can handle an extreme x9000 duo core, can it handle say a P9600 upgrade from the T8100? Also, will an SSD drive upgrade increase performance some?

Nope, you can't upgrade to a P9600, different socket I think.

An SSD would be a major performance boost, and if you have the money would be a sweet upgrade.

EviLCorsaiR, I have the Area 51 M17x R1 with the X9000 dual core processor...I've just come across a i5-480m processor that was in a toshiba laptop. Do you think this processor would work in my laptop?

Impossible, it's an core i5, totally different generation.

Best compatible is the X9000 - 2.8ghz dualcore
